Your salary, I mean. Obviously I know what the situation is in the public sector (and how it sucks); but what's happening in the private sector? I remember, many aeons ago, that I used to get an annual pay review, which would inevitably be followed by a small, but significant rise. Because, y'know, bread and beer and bananas were all going up in price, and that seemed like the reasonable thing to do.

I haven't had a rise in over seven years now, despite the cost of living soaring - and my job becoming considerably more demanding. I've been thinking, well, that's normal (aus-fucking-terity); and, as in the public sector, it sucks.

But am I missing something? Is every else's salary still going up, year on year, even without a change of job title? I don't need specific details, obviously, but if anyone is prepared to share what their job is, and whether or not they expect an annual, incremental rise, I would find it hugely helpful...

Thank you.

I work in financial services and I get a rise every year. Performance related,,around 5% pa plus bonus. My salary has gone up by 20% in the last four years.

WeeM · 06/07/2017 18:53

Public sector here too so it's been 1% max, usually about 0.75%. Don't even get increments anymore as they did away with that too. I know private sector people who get two pay rises a year...:-(

meckslin · 06/07/2017 18:53

Yes, between 5-10%. But it's based on performance, it's not an automatic raise and not everyone gets it (I always have). I also get a performance-related bonus. I work in the IT sector.

flumpybear · 06/07/2017 18:54

I work at a university and we go to the next spine point (so about £500-£2k depending on your seniority) and we also get our pay increment of around 1 ish % on all spine points (so if you're st the top you still get your 1% ish but you won't go up a spine point (i.e. If the bottom of a salary range is 1 and the top is 10 those on 1 will go up to 2 but also get the 1 ish%, and those on a 10'qill stay at a 10 but will get that 1% ish increase

TulipsInAJug · 06/07/2017 18:55

Pay has been the same for 8 years. No opportunities for promotion or payrises.

Xmasbaby11 · 06/07/2017 18:56

Public sector. Everyone goes up an increment a year. It's not performance related and after 7 years there's no increase. No bonus obviously.

There's no way of increasing your salary apart from promotion and then there has to be a job advertised publicly.

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 06/07/2017 18:57

0.5% rise for those who have done well in their annual review where I work.
Obviously I appreciate the rise but sadly it doesn't really make too much difference!

flumpybear · 06/07/2017 18:57

Oh forgot to say - with all the increments and % rises my salty has increased by nearly 12k in the last 6 years - I'm quite senior, but a bit of room to move higher

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 06/07/2017 19:00

Private sector here and no pay rise for last five years. Luckily my salary is healthy.

However as a manager it annoys me that a few of my admin staff get almost the minimum wage due to the minimum wage increase and their wages not increasing.

I've presented this to the director but the reality is that the company whilst still viable just doesn't have the profit to give a significant pay rise to anyone.

kaytee87 · 06/07/2017 19:02

Usually about 3%

Brittbugs80 · 06/07/2017 19:02

Husband an Engineer, gets a 5% payrise every year plus 10% of annual salary as a bonus every July.

I don't but I'm £2.50 an hour more than minimum wage.

flippychick · 06/07/2017 19:03

We used to get generous pay increases based on performance rating, but this year even those on the top grade (difficult to achieve, less than 1% of the organisation gets this grade) got 1.5% pay increase.

On the positive side at least they are transparent and share the matrix so you don't think you are being discriminated against.

Groupie123 · 06/07/2017 19:04

Nothing inflationary. It's all dependant on performance.

NotAPuffin · 06/07/2017 19:04

Public sector in Ireland. Pay went down by €4500 a year 8 years ago and hasn't gone up noticeably since. DH is also public sector so we lost €9000 a year.

What we couldn't have done with that €72,000...

maggiethemagpie · 06/07/2017 19:06

ha ha ha ha ha
No, I've had a 1% payrise in three years.
Luckily my salary benchmarks well compared to the local market so it could be worse, although this isn't why they haven't raised it. They haven't raised anyone's salary.

I once heard someone say a company only has two incentives to raise your salary - to get you or to keep you.

maggiethemagpie · 06/07/2017 19:08

Don't want to give too much info on where I work, but it's a national private sector organisation.

musicposy · 06/07/2017 19:10

DH is private sector, the union negotiated a 1% pay rise a few years back and since then it has been frozen. DD has had a small pay rise each year but only to keep up with NMW. Neither are in high paying jobs. I'm self employed and haven't dare put my prices up for years. So as a family we get worse and worse off with every passing year.

It looks as though those already in high earning jobs are getting their pay rises still, and those in lowlier jobs are getting next to nothing. It makes me so cross, that those who need it the least are the most likely to get it. No wonder the gap between rich and poor is increasing Sad

FuzzyCustard · 06/07/2017 19:11

I work in the Third Sector. No pay rises for years on end, no incremental scales. the only way to get more money is to get a new job, hence churn in my particular department is about 18 months. Very wasteful of experience and continuity and time/money recruiting new staff.

frieda909 · 06/07/2017 19:13

I'm in an institution which is sort of public sector, but not quite in the same way as something like the NHS. We get a small increase each year, around 1.5%, but absolutely no chance of any bigger pay rise unless I get promoted to a more senior role.

I used to be in the private sector and I could pretty much count on my salary going up by a grand or two with each annual review. It's been a bit of an adjustment Sad

(But I also love my job now and hated my old one, so can't win em all I guess!)

Private sector, aside from promotion related increases, it's been between 2 and 3% for a few years now. For everyone.

dementedma · 06/07/2017 19:16

Private sector. No pay rise in last 5 years.

caffeinestream · 06/07/2017 19:17

Yeah, I'm in retail and I've consistently had payrises every year for the last five years. Not by much, but it's been a rise nonetheless.

I recently got a 5.6% pay rise, though.

SageMist · 06/07/2017 19:20

I'm in the private sector, for an international company. We get a yearly rise, around 2%. This year I've realised how far behind my pay is compared to jobs being advertised locally, so I've asked for a pay rise. It's been agreed but I've yet to hear how much.

missanony · 06/07/2017 19:21

Yes, every year apart from 2010 I think. I generally get around 5% a year plus bonuses. My salary has nearly trebled in 10 years although I've moved a few times.
