I think that you did the right thing by sorting it out sooner rather than later.

They obviously didn't want to give details as they must have known that it would be a flat out no from most people.

I think that is good advice - I wouldn't go over the messages and get sucked in or made more anxious. Her child care isn't your problem and you should work on giving it no more headspeace.

I think if you haven't done anything you'd have found them on your doorstep at 6.00 am. Once you knew their expecations you could either worry endlessly and then try deal with it on your doorstep, confront and get to the bottom or not be around those days which might come back to you later on anyway. None of the opotions were excatly great for you.

One of my SILs (dh's sister) is like this (his other sister is lovely ) Expects the entire universe to revolve around her.

There are indeed people who are so self-centred that they can't conceive that other people have their own plans and then get annoyed that don't put their lives on hold in order to be able to save them money "do favours"

I think you did the right thing addressing it now otherwise you would be guilted into minding them

I really don't get why she needs her kids to be looked after. Are they troublemakers? Will they wreck her perfect house and bring over loads of friends and have a party?
