Hi All

Desperately trying to stop smoking (Mysef and dp) and keep finding reccomendations on Amazon for the Allen Carr - easyway to stop smoking.

I just wondered if anyone had any stories (success or otherwise) they could share with me?
Thanks all

My dad tried it and failed, years ago, however has just stopped smoking after 50 years. He found the NHS smoking cessation services incredibly helpful and has found the gum and patches incredibly useful.

StickThatInYourPipe · 03/07/2017 13:29

Hi Boysof thank you Smile

I did get on well with the patches about a year ago but came off too early (got a bit cock sure) and then caved

Hi, I read his book and listened to the cd that came with it and never touched another cigarette since - that was 15 months ago - best thing I ever read - go for it!

StickThatInYourPipe · 03/07/2017 13:32

Hi Snotty is it a programme with you doing tasks etc?

I managed to go cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant, but DH struggled so he switched to an e-cig and weaned himself off the nicotine over a period of about 6 months. Could you try that?

Good for you on wanting to quit though, I tried numerous times and failed before I had no choice but to quit through pregnancy.

You can do it! Grin

sharklovers · 03/07/2017 13:33

I used "The only way to stop smoking" along with 5 or 6 friends. That was 10 years ago and we're all still clean. The book explains why nicotine substitutes don't help you stop smoking!

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 03/07/2017 13:33

I used the Allen Carr book ten years ago and haven't had one since.

I think it works for some people. You have to already be 'ready' to give up if you know what I mean. For me it was just a 'finality'

But it didn't work for my friend. But she always had an excuse as to why it wasn't a good time to quit. But whatever works for you. Good luck!

Yep my dad has just moved onto stage 3 patches and stopped smoking in March. He really had to fight the urge to move onto the next stage too quickly.

snottybabe · 03/07/2017 13:36

Hi, its a hypno cd which you listen to once you have finished reading the book. You smoke your last fag, do cd and then all done. I really really wanted to give up so think that helped. My partner did it too and he'd smoked heavily for years, hes just done a year without too.

SparklyLeprechaun · 03/07/2017 13:36

It didn't work for me, but then I tried everything and nothing worked apart from pure willpower. One day I threw the fags in the bin and never touched them since. It was hard.

StarTravels · 03/07/2017 13:40

My DH did and immediately stopped and hasn't smoked in 10 years!

Lucisky · 03/07/2017 13:44

I gave up smoking 12 years ago, it was about my fourth attempt. The Allen Carr book is good and gives you some resolve,it makes you feel, yes, I can do this! The one thing about giving up is you really have to want to. I used to think if I could just give up for six weeks or so, then I wouldn't want a fag after all that time. Not true, for me in any case. Up to six months later, at times of stress, I'd think, my god I need a fag, and them remember I didn't smoke anymore. Managing to give up smoking was empowering too. I felt if I could do that, I could do anything. Good luck.

RoseVase2010 · 03/07/2017 13:45

Yes! They're great, really really simple and easy to do. Just read the book honestly, what's the worst that can happen? You spend a tiny bit of money on a book and it either works or it doesn't but apart from a few quid spent nothing to really lose.

II found it a really useful mindset to get into, you can apply it to a lot of things too like spending and eating!

StickThatInYourPipe · 03/07/2017 13:49

Thank you everyone I have downloaded it from Amazon

I am quite desperate to quit we have been ttc and actually I think it's quite irresponsible of us to do this whilst smoking

The book worked for me. 18 years smoke free now. They're amazing

snottybabe · 03/07/2017 13:52

Good Luck! on both counts!!

RortyCrankle · 03/07/2017 13:52

I tried, twice - didn't work for me. The only thing that stopped me smoking was to have a fall, fractured my leg and was in hospital on traction for eight weeks. Somewhat drastic, don't recommend it but it worked Smile

Friendzone · 03/07/2017 13:53

It worked for me 15 years ago. However, after being smoke free for over a year I started again. I don't know why I did, maybe just my lifestyle. When i found out I was pregnant with my son 13 years ago I sent my flatmate out for 10 silk cut, smoked 1 and then never smoked again. I will never smoke again. I think that even though I failed with Alan the first time, the things he said are still there and that's why it was easy for me to stop when pregnant and never want to start again.

Bunbunbunny · 03/07/2017 13:54

Book worked for me too, I read the little version and it stuck in my head for years. I managed to quit for one year started smoking again for about six months, then quit again. I used patches with the book and I haven't smoked in 9 years now. Can't recommend it highly enough at it will challenge the way you think about smoking

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 03/07/2017 13:56

It didn't work at all for me. I stopped all of a sudden just before I found out I was pregnant, then started again when the baby was about 8 months old. I stopped permanently in January last year by switching to vaping.

Crunchymum · 03/07/2017 13:57

Read the book in May 2011 and never touched another cig. (I was a 10+ a day smoker for 15 years!!)

Didn't gain weight and never had so much as a craving or urge.

I cannot recommend this book enough.

niceandspicey · 03/07/2017 14:01

I used it about 14 years ago and thought it was incredible! Never been even tempted since & I was on 20+ a day. I can't recommend it highly enough. Go for it!

Cherrypancakes · 03/07/2017 15:09

Read the book, stopped smoking for three months, felt myself weakening so instead got an ecig. Was on that for a couple of years, gradually lowered nicotine until went to no nicotine eliquid for a year then eventually just stopped when the ecig broke. So it's been a long drawn out process but the result is that I am total non smoker now and don't miss it, even when I have a drink. Couldn't have done it without the book though, it got me through the worst.
