That Bleu is not a common American name?

That we do have required biology lessons. (Obviously)

Baby showers were never meant to be massive affairs with enterence fees and that I never heard of such a thing before MN. Your mate threw a party, invited your other friends, you ate brownies and were given diapers artfully formed in to a cake.

We also didn't invent "destination weddings" if we did had done, no one would go as we get far less time off than you do. It's also the reason many Americans don't have a passport, nothing to with America being too awesome to bother leaving.

Only a third of us have guns.

I was never taught creationalism in school. It is illegal to mix church and state and we I never took any form of RE. We do not have state funded religious schools. Your nearest school will be a non religious state school.

Any Americans have anything else to add?

A vegetarian American?! I thought those were myths WinkGrin

I have been watching a lot of food network and America diners appear a lot. The food sizes are huge.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 03/07/2017 11:12

Where is all this crap being bandied about on MN?!

I have never seen anyone mention the name Bleu, call Halloween American or claim you're all gun toting nutters!

I think you've seen a few comments over a long time, because it's definitely not something I see 'regularly'. Except maybe about baby showers. Which are originally an American thing, so nothing wrong with saying so.

PratStick · 03/07/2017 11:13

^only a third of us have guns
That's fine then now you've enlightened all us incredibly thick Brits. That'll make it OK the next time one of them guns down a classroom of five year olds. hmm^

I'm not sure how you got from "most Americans don't want guns'' to that but, good for you.

As an American who actually has to worry about their family being harmed by gun violence it's far from an abstract concept.

proudbadmum yes and eating out is cheaper for some reason though I'd say comparatively our groceries are far more expensive. I never understood that.

1/3 of Americans own guns but the amount people that owns guns is almost twice the uk population

PratStick · 03/07/2017 11:16

Beyoncé (my phone did the accent, well impressed) named her child that because she is *Beyoncé, can do whatever the hell Beyonce wants to do. It is still not a common name for any people of any colour.

Neither is Sir before anyone asks.

All countries have various problems and stereotypes

Only americans get personally insulted, aggresive and start ranting about anti american when its mentioned.

Say something bad about england and most english people will agree and list many more faults too

PratStick · 03/07/2017 11:18

1pink4blue, how would you feel if a 1/3 of your country supported something awful and try as you might and vote as hard as you can you couldn't stop that? But that everyone assumed you were a thick asshole despite most of you being quite reasonable?

OP posts:
PaulAnkaTheDog · 03/07/2017 11:18

Or us Scots. We are all a range of differing cunts.

Really? Grin only Americans do that? That's an interesting theory. It's not a correct one, but it is interesting.

People tend to be very pc about other countries on MN but then save all their xenophobia for things they heard once about America from an uncle twice removed on holiday in kentucky in 1976

1pink4blue · 03/07/2017 11:20

Who has said you were a thick arsehole?
But only 1/3 of people is a lot of people.

PratStick · 03/07/2017 11:22

It is, not disagreeing but 1/3 is only 1/3 of a whole. And the number is decreasing.

Creationism is indeed illegal if taught under the guise of religious studies. However, it's frequently taught under the guise of civics, philosophy or comparative religion.

The estimates on gun owning vary between on third and 40% of households. That is just households, so it's not 1/3 of people owning guns. There are around 265 million legally registered guns in the US.

Dawndonnaagain · 03/07/2017 11:26

Creationism in schools

PaulAnkaTheDog · 03/07/2017 11:29

Well that's an interesting article Dawn.

PratStick · 03/07/2017 11:29

You're correct the number of people who actually own the gun is smaller, but I'd count one gun in a house as "belonging" to everyone iyswim.

America is massive...

My point being generalisations are meaningless because it's so huge and diverse. I'd love to visit America again, I went once to California when I was young and it was great. I particularly enjoyed the fortune teller who told me I'd marry a dark skinned american. I was hoping for a native american and to get to live in a teepee. I married an englishman.

IronCurtain · 03/07/2017 11:30

araiwa that's definitely not true if you're a Romanian living in the UK nowadays. If you even hint at the tiniest dislike you get told to go back to where you came from pretty quickly. Which is a shame as I used to like it here before Farage & his friends got so popular and surely I should be allowed to complain about the weather like everyone else?!
You're not wrong OP Americans are having a hard time at the moment internationally and I know it doesn't feel good to be stereotyped, regardless of where you come from.

In a country of 350 million it's unsurprising that some schools are trying to flout the laws. Meanwhile I walk past two primaries to get my children to a school that's not a failing Catholic school or a hardcore CofE which I was definitely told was not actually a thing.
