To ask Welsh mumsnetters how to pronounce Geraint

We've been watching the opening stages of the Tour de France and have been thrilled by Geraint Thomas's exploits. However minor marital disharmony has broken out on how to pronounce Mr Thomas's name.

I pronounce it Gerrint to rhyme with Pint.

My wife is adamant it is pronounced Gerroint to rhyme with point.

Which of us (if either) is right?

Dunno where in S. Wales you are BreakWind but it's definitely not pronounced like that. I know several Geraints. All say it Gerr-eye-nt

Like the video, not sure I'd describe it as rhyming with pint, but nearer that than your wife's version

EastMidsMummy · 02/07/2017 17:32

Welsh, unlike English, is a 'say it how you see it' language.

Cymru = Simm-roo

EastMids - it works better with the Welsh alphabet. Smile

I once had a Londoner boyfriend take me to task about the way I pronounced Plaid Cymru on the grounds that he'd done politics A Level. Wasn't the reason we broke up, but incidents like that didn't help. Wink

Exactly. So saying say it like you see it isn't very helpful if you don't speak Welsh. Geraint looks like it rhymes with paint if you are used to English.

MikeUniformMike · 02/07/2017 17:43

I get cross at how people mispronounce Plaid Cymru. as Plide Coomry.
The nearest approximation is Plide Cumry.

DH calls his friend Gerr-ant (as in ant).

BreakWindandFire · 02/07/2017 18:15

I'm from the Valleys MikeUniformMike where we talk tidy!

Guepe · 02/07/2017 18:22

Another Welshy voting for 'rhymes with pint'.

llangennith · 02/07/2017 18:26

Not that popular a name any more but it is Gerr-int to rhyme with pint and emphasis on first syllable. Never heard it said any other way in 45 years in South Wales.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 02/07/2017 18:26

Geh-Rynt

TheLuminaries · 02/07/2017 18:30

The only Geraint I have met pronounced it to rhyme with 'ant' - but he was Cornish, not Welsh & I assumed it was a Cornish name.

DMCWelshCakes · 02/07/2017 18:31

EastMids - I totally get that. And I'd be the last to argue that Welsh names can be difficult to pronounce & spell.

He was convinced it was Plide Come-roo. And no amount of tact, correction & provision of evidence would convince him otherwise. Dick.

rightsaidfreddo · 02/07/2017 19:09

It's GEH-RYNT so yeah rhyming with pint. I'm welsh and it's my dads name!

rightsaidfreddo · 02/07/2017 19:11

Gerroint sounds so funny 😂

rightsaidfreddo · 02/07/2017 19:14

@BreakWindandFire my dads nickname is Grunt after an English person pronounced his name like that!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/07/2017 19:25

Learner here, but definitely GER-aint to rhyme with pint (suits every Geraint I know, as well Wink)

Now we have sorted out how to pronounce his name, let us not forget his achievements today and yesterday.

hippyhippyshake · 02/07/2017 20:14

Only knew one and he was JerRANT. Not Welsh

Eggandchipsfortea93 · 02/07/2017 20:15

I always thought it was more like 'GERunt', don't recall hearing this long gerEYEnt pronunciation!
