Just that really! How many pairs of trousers/shirts/jumpers do they actually need.

The school shop offers the names actually on the labels which I'll probably do for jumpers etc and sew... I did iron on before and found they invariably came off after a while.

I was looking at the next school trousers as they do slim fit (even chinos Smile) which I think will work better as DS is a beanpole and looked ridiculous on the pleat front ones from the school shop which are also ridiculously expensive

Thanks for all the useful advice.

One more q, do boys wear shorts in sept?

I underestimated for reception so had to buy more, son ruined lots and I didn't want to wash every day or even every other day.
I recommend going to Asda and getting:
5 pack of polo shirts (think this is £6)
3 pairs of trousers (more if you can afford it)
3 jumpers (more if you can afford it)
7 pack of socks
2 pack of white t shirts for pe
Pe plimsolls
Black trainers for outdoor pe
Pe shorts
Black joggers for pe

I bought 5 jumpers & trousers. I only like to wash at the weekend.

Coulddowithanap · 02/07/2017 10:30

2 trousers, 5 shirts, 2 jumpers.

DS doesn't come home dirty everyday, it's worse in the summer as he doesn't wear his jumper and so needs a clean white shirt every day.

One PE kit. Ours come back home end of term for washing. Not sure why some think it's gross, they don't wear them for long and they hardly sweat. (As they get older we get PE kit sent home more frequently for washing, this started when DD was 10 in year 5)

DS has trousers from Tesco, they are still in good condition after the school year.

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 02/07/2017 10:30

Five shirts (assume lunch will make its way there every day)
2 jumpers
2 trousers
2 shorts (probably don't need to worry about that for a while!)
Five pairs of socks as the damn things go awol
And just one set for pe kit. We only takes ours home at the end of term. It's not dirty or sweaty. They only do pe once a week and it is of the tag, skipping etc variety. We don't have a grass field though just a playground. I'm sure if there was mud they'd be messier...
M&s for all the non branded uniform. They've only got three more weeks to go and they'll have lasted all year!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 02/07/2017 10:31

I'm a reception TA.

They only wear PE kit for 45 minutes max, it doesn't need washing every week, half termly is fine I think. I would definitely have a couple of pe shirts, even if they're named they don't always go home with the right child and and then reappear.

Beadoren · 02/07/2017 10:32

Jumpers are £12 or £17... that's a LOT of money on jumpers when I'm at home and can do a wash so o think I'll stick with thee.

One of them mum's I know said she bought one cardigan which lasted all year Hmm her daughter must be magical

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 02/07/2017 10:32

*in my class anyway PE is only once a week.

Coulddowithanap · 02/07/2017 10:34

DS wore shorts in September as it was warm last year. He has 2 pairs of shorts.

PoppyFleur · 02/07/2017 10:36

I bought 2 sets of school uniform for reception DS initially. I grossly underestimated, if there is dirt around, he attracts it!

First set of school uniform was M&S, second set was Asda and it washed just as well, Asda do slim fit trousers for boys and its cargo style school shorts are great.

Coulddowithanap · 02/07/2017 10:38

My DD only has one cardigan (it's actually lasted almost 2 years lol) haven't needed anymore, need another now as it's too short in the arms. Nothing magical about her haha.

wonderwoo · 02/07/2017 10:44

Tesco trousers with reinforced knees are great for my ds who crawls through bushes on a daily basis! They last him over a year if he hasn't grown out of them.

I didn't buy shorts for September the first year and we had a hot September and everywhere had sold out. The last three years have had really warm Septembers so I always plan for shorts now.

I get five polo shirts, so I only have to do a white wash once a week. Three trousers and three jumpers gets us by, with a wash midweek. My ds is particularly messy though!

Beadoren · 02/07/2017 10:48

One last question. We can choose polo shirts or shirts. Jumpers are v neck or sweatshirts but o far prefer the v necks and I looked at the second hand uniforms and it seems the sweatshirts bobble. Would I be a Wally to buy actual shirts?

OP posts:
Questioningeverything · 02/07/2017 10:58

Thanks for posting this, ds starts in September, I'm new to all this and it's helped. I'm at home all day, so could in theory wash midweek but think I'll buy 3pairs of trousers, 2jumpers and shirts for every day.

Where's everyone buying school shoes? I was thinking startrite...?

AnnieOH1 · 02/07/2017 10:59

When I was younger my parents got me 5 plus 1 for uniform then depending on what PE lessons we had I had the same number of indoor and outdoor plus 1. So in years we had 3 sessions a week that was 4 indoor and outdoor kits iyswim. Uniform was a jumper.

Basically they wanted to be able to launder it all at once but keep a spare set for Monday in case anything went awry.

Marv1nGay3 · 02/07/2017 11:04

Do the shirts have short sleeves?
If not I would go for polo shirts ( assuming they do have short sleeves) as they won't want to be wearing long sleeves in warmer weather.

Starlight2345 · 02/07/2017 11:07

Polo tops for reception... My DS top in reception seemed to come home dirty most days So Make sure you have enough for one a day..

My son also has white tops so I tend to have far less white wash..So far easier for me to put a load on with trousers or top than one polo or two polo tops.

slightlyglitterbrained · 02/07/2017 11:10

Re: shirts vs polo shirts, would your DS be able to manage all the shirt buttons when getting undressed/dressed again for PE?

Shorts are also a good option because they seem a bit more flexible if your DC has a growth spurt. DS seems to have shot up in summer term, just as it seems too late to go buy new stuff in case he outgrows it by September, so we've got a couple of pairs of shorts.

DP wants to get a whole new set of polo shirts but I'm holding out for end of term, plus most shops only seem to have a limited range of colours in at the mo so might as well wait till they get in the "back to school" stock.

Queenofthestress · 02/07/2017 11:10

5 tops, 2 trousers, 3 jumpers for mine xx

wonderwoo · 02/07/2017 11:11

Personally I would go for polo shirts.

Our sweatshirts go bobbly too but not if I wash them inside out.

PeaFaceMcgee · 02/07/2017 11:15

Ha - we had one set of clothes. DD not messy and could wash & dry in evening if necc.

Bumbumtaloo · 02/07/2017 11:20

Personally for reception I wouldn't have normal shirts just because of the PE angle.

Both of my DD's have been in the same jumper/cardigan all year they were a bit big for both of them in September though, I got 3-4 in everything for DD2 and she was swamped.

We have one on one clean in our house hence only two uniforms where the rest of the dirty washing comes from who knows

Coulddowithanap · 02/07/2017 11:23

Do you have the option to wear either shirts or polo shirts?

Ours have to wear polo shirts. Other schools in the area have to wear shirts.

Did you get a uniform list?

JennyOnAPlate · 02/07/2017 11:23

We did (and still do!) 5 tshirts, 3 skirts/trousers and 2 cardigans. I've always found this to be fine. Schools tend to be overheated in my experience so jumpers/cardigans spend most of every day on their pegs, even in winter.

womaninatightspot · 02/07/2017 11:29

I did five of everything but I have a filthy child who came home looking like he'd dragged himself through the mud everyday. If you have a fleece option those things seem to resist everything and you could manage with two or three if a bit forgetful. M&S trousers lasted us the year did try an Asda pair but they were stupidly wide on skinny DS so have stuck to slim fit from M&S.
