To think that Baby Dove have messed up

With their latest marketing campaign.

"Our mild and hypoallergenic baby products are even suitable for looking after your newborn. So whether you’re among the 66% who think that breastfeeding in public is fine, or the 34% who think otherwise, whatever choice you make, we are with you every step of the way."

Clearly it's really helpful for new mums to be reminded that people don't approve of public breastfeeding. 😒

Picture below is part of the campaign.

Lots of angry people on the Baby Dove FB page.

What a clanger. Do you think they did it on purpose or do you think their marketing director is tone deaf and knows nothing about mothers or breastfeeding?

Well after seeing their ad campaign I will never be buying any of their products. It's made me so angry!

MrBobDobalina · 01/07/2017 15:10

thread on MN with 37 posts and trending. I would say the ad exec who made this deserves a bonus personally. No one would be talking about it if the ad had said breastfeed your baby then wash her/him in dove would they ?

Yeah but the problem is that they don't only make baby products. Which means that people like me, who are past the baby stage, have an association with Dove that now says "oooh, they're anti breastfeeding in public" and feel all annoyed when I'm buying deodorant and moisturiser, so I choose another brand for my family.

If you're controversial enough you can create a negative association very quickly. Not ALL publicity is good publicity.

Italiangreyhound · 01/07/2017 15:21

Dove is a shit company, I hope this puts more people off them! If they are preparing and selling products to clean babies with who cares what they think about breast feeding, or what statistics they can scare up!

They did produce one good advert, which I love.

(Beware scenes of surgery)

But this advert put me off buying their products altogether! (Beware scenes of dead animals)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/07/2017 16:10

Am I the only one who expected to see a cute baby dove upon opening this thread.Grin

putdownyourphone · 01/07/2017 16:31

Agree that not all publicity is good publicity - not anymore now that social media and the internet is around. They have very little control over what people say about them, and not only will that stop people from buying the products, it will give them a huge bad reputation

53rdWay · 01/07/2017 16:56

I think their marketing campaign recognises the rich, rich land to be ploughed in the "everyone out there BUT US is out to get you, hard-working mums!" territory.

Still stupid though. "There's no right or wrong way to parent. There's only YOUR way. So whether you're among the 68% who think your children should be loved and cherished, or the 32% who think the ungrateful little bastards should grow up in a cupboard under the stairs and be grateful for the scraps you throw them sometimes - we're with you every step of the way!"

miniloco · 01/07/2017 16:59

So very very strange Confused I cannot see the link between nice smelly stuff to wash your baby and the crap 'survey' info they're adding to their adverts. Like someone has said it's like Dove are trying to say they're on your side regardless of what you believe in, trying not to piss any particular group off.

For you.

Sugarcoma · 01/07/2017 19:06

As someone said upthread I just don't understand why they're banging on about bf when they're advertising soap

Morphene · 01/07/2017 19:33

argh! I wish I'd seen this before I bought one of their products today. Idiots!

I once had an argument with someone from Unilever because they were citing their dove campaigns as being feminist.

I pointed out that 'don't worry your not as ugly as you think you are' isn't actually a feminist message in comparison to say something that didn't reference beauty or ugliness at all....

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/07/2017 20:17

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

corythatwas · 01/07/2017 20:25

I'm still struggling with the connection between Dove products and feeding a baby?

Are they saying that there is a percentage out there who think it is fine to feed a newborn baby with soap?

Confused
fruitlovingmonkey · 01/07/2017 20:30

Since they are either fucking stupid or trying to generate publicity, how about we draw attention to the bad things about their company and products?
I'll go first:
Did you know that Dove test on animals? See the PETA website for some great cruelty- free alternatives.

FiftyShadesOfDuckEggBlue · 01/07/2017 21:02

Truly disgusting. Angry Dove is a dreadful company. I've been annoyed by their faux feminist ads in the past, but I think this has put me off their products for good.

My first thought is that they are capitalising on the whole acceptance of polarisation thing, 'there are two sides in each argument', 'end mummy wars' etc. Apart from the minor detail that, ahem, not allowing someone to breastfeed in public is illegal. Along the lines of this godawful Heineken campaign.

I would not buy baby lotion anyway as all midwives and my health visitor advised us to only bath the baby in water as 'baby products' and wipes would strip away her natural oils. As some people already said, isn't this the guidance these days?

SprinklesandIcecream · 01/07/2017 21:03

Not so sure about the publicity. Yes, I now know that Dove sell baby products but such a stupid statement means I won't even consider buying it.

squishysquirmy · 01/07/2017 23:06

I posted earlier that I thought they were secretly making the ad terrible on purpose, to stir up controversy.
I now think that the trolling is more overt than that, and the "stats" are so made up, that in a couple of days a fresh campaign will be rolled out that says "They were made up! We were trolling ya, because [insert trite statement about motherhood here]". This fresh campaign will come complete with a press statement just perfect for padding out column inches with minimum effort, and will result in eerily similar articles appearing across very different different publications.
Like with their "perfect mother" billboard (she was a CGI robot all along! Geddit?)

Its still stupid, because customers don't respond well to being taken for mugs, unless its April 1st.

KaosReigns · 02/07/2017 10:36

I read it as a passive aggressive swipe at those against to be fair. More saying that people against feeding in public would rather babies go hungry to protect their delicate sensibilities.

The phrasing does not seem like they agree with those against it at all.

It's a bit like saying 'John is against animal testing, Judy likes to watch puppies suffer. Who do you agree with?'

outputgap · 03/07/2017 18:24

Sorry. What?

Not feeding babies is a thing? Not feeding them? People are passionately opposed to feeding babies? And Dove is with them every step of the way?

Are they coming along with me now while I go kick some kittens and poke the eyes out of fluffy chicks? Because, you know, we all have to find our own way when parenting and buying surprisingly drying skin products?

Do fuck off.

affectionincoldclimate · 05/07/2017 21:38

The exec who thought this up at Ogilvy is crying in the toilets as we speak. But the person at Unilever who signed off on this (because it would not be released otherwise) is now explaining how this clusterfuck got through the chain of command. And perhaps the chain of command didn't have any women in it.
Send a complaint to ASA as this campaign clearly legitimises discriminatory behaviour as the Equality Commission guidelines are very clear on BFing in public ie. it is illegal to discriminate against women doing so.
