To think that Baby Dove have messed up

minifingerz · 01/07/2017 13:16

With their latest marketing campaign.

"Our mild and hypoallergenic baby products are even suitable for looking after your newborn. So whether you’re among the 66% who think that breastfeeding in public is fine, or the 34% who think otherwise, whatever choice you make, we are with you every step of the way."

Clearly it's really helpful for new mums to be reminded that people don't approve of public breastfeeding. 😒

Picture below is part of the campaign.

Lots of angry people on the Baby Dove FB page.

What a clanger. Do you think they did it on purpose or do you think their marketing director is tone deaf and knows nothing about mothers or breastfeeding?

And no, I wasn't aware Dove made baby products either.

squishysquirmy · 01/07/2017 13:57

tbf, the statistics used in the campaigns of beauty companies always sound made up:
"9 out of 10 women LOVED our new soap!*"

*out of a sample group of 5 women.

RockyBird · 01/07/2017 13:58

The body lotion is good sniffs oneself and only a quid in Asda.

hoddtastic · 01/07/2017 14:03

Didn't they also centre a trans-man mum as the best type of mum ever? I think Dove can join my list of boycotted stuff. Enough.

MrsOverTheRoad · 01/07/2017 14:08

I think it's part of this campaign

But taken out of context it's just weird! They're assuming people all over know their product and campaign!

This image talks a lot about percentages...

Whatsername17 · 01/07/2017 14:09

No one gives a shiny shit about women breastfeeding in public. Made up statistics.

SylviaPoe · 01/07/2017 14:10

Has advice changed? I thought you were not supposed to use wipes, shampoo etc on a newborn baby, but that was twenty years ago.

Isn't everyone sick of divisiveness? I certainly don't find it appealing in a baby product.

PratStick · 01/07/2017 14:10

All of DOve's ad campaigns are aimed at absolute fucking idiots. This is... unsurprising

PratStick · 01/07/2017 14:12

Whatserbame if you read the comments under any news story where a woman has been refused service for Bf, you'd know that was unfortunately not true.

But it is healthy and legal so pretending opposing it is a valid position is a wanky way to advertise soap

blamethecat · 01/07/2017 14:14

Apart form it being a load of made up crap, what has feeding choices got to do with bathing a baby ? Beside which isn't plain water advised for babies anyway ?

mummymeister · 01/07/2017 14:24

thread on MN with 37 posts and trending. I would say the ad exec who made this deserves a bonus personally. No one would be talking about it if the ad had said breastfeed your baby then wash her/him in dove would they ?

PratStick · 01/07/2017 14:29

I don't think it's done Dove any good. I think the ad guy (and it's totally a guy) is crap. I was nearly totally off them after their shitty real beauty campaign while also selling deaoderant that makes your armpits pretty. But this has pushed them in to nestle zone for me.

Don't they also sell lightning bleach creams to African and Asian women?

SylviaPoe · 01/07/2017 14:29

I don't know Mummymeister. I would never use Dove anyway, regardless of the advertising, because I don't like the smell or consistency of the product.

ThatsNotMyMarmot · 01/07/2017 14:29

Just had a look at their website. There's no right way or wrong way to parent. Only YOUR way - Boak!

SylviaPoe · 01/07/2017 14:32

I've just watched the ad for it, and every single mother in it is middle class or wealthy, older, thin and conventionally attractive. So how it represents a diversity of women goodness only knows.

It certainly doesn't represent me.

glitterglitters · 01/07/2017 14:33

@ThatsNotMyMarmot "mummy knows best" HmmConfused

C8H10N4O2 · 01/07/2017 14:35

I had no idea that Dove did baby products, now I do.

Perhaps that was the objective of such a divisive campaign.

putdownyourphone · 01/07/2017 14:37

I don't understand the second part 'who think otherwise' - are dove saying they agree that babies shouldn't be breastfed in public (as well as agreeing that they should)?

SylviaPoe · 01/07/2017 14:41

I've just checked and advice has not changed.

So they've basically created a campaign encouraging mothers to use Dove products on newborn babies, despite the NHS advice being not to do so.

And pre-empted any criticism of such money making bollocks with their whole mothers know best line.

Littlepond · 01/07/2017 14:48

Huh? How can 60% be "passionately" against feeding a crying baby?!

What an awful campaign!

OlennasWimple · 01/07/2017 14:48

Well, at least now lots more people are aware that Dove makes baby products (which is the main point of their advertising)....

kaytee87 · 01/07/2017 14:51

Terrible advert

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 01/07/2017 14:56

Were they perhaps trying to say something about people not agreeing with feeding on demand/favouring a feeding schedule and got it badly, badly wrong?

Such a stupid campaign. I hope they provide answers or learn from the backlash they face.

ThatsNotMyMarmot · 01/07/2017 14:56

What Glitters said. No wrong way to parent! Some right herberts around my way. There is definitely a wrong way to parent Grin
