is it prudish to dislike the show ?

OP posts:
Easilyflattered · 30/06/2017 21:34

I feel like the only person left who has pubes and no tattoos.

donquixotedelamancha · 30/06/2017 21:36

If some advanced civilisation discovers humanity, stuff like this and Jeremy Kyle will be why they consider wiping us out before we infect them with our culture. It's the modern version of a victorian freak show; preying on attention seeking fools for cheap kicks. The people who make it are the moral equivalent of cold callers, homeopaths and DM journalists- parasites.

Lets hope the aliens watch Breaking Bad, listen to Johnny Cash and read Shakespeare before reaching their decision.

MirandaWest · 30/06/2017 21:38

DH and I watched another series and quite enjoyed it Smile
Was odd seeing that many genitalia in one show I must admit.

EdmundCleverClogs · 30/06/2017 21:41

donquixotedelamancha, you might have had a point, up until Shakespeare, who truly wrote utter drivel.

donquixotedelamancha · 30/06/2017 21:45

@EdmundCleverClogs "donquixotedelamancha, you might have had a point, up until Shakespeare, who truly wrote utter drivel"

[Ignoring point of thread now] Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I'm listening.

Trrrrrrrr · 30/06/2017 21:50

6 completely shaven women in the first part of episode 1.

Is this the expectation now?

I know its choice etc etc but I was quite surprised by that and I am not sure what message it sends out to younger viewers

BertieBotts · 30/06/2017 21:54

It is the norm yes, it has been ever since I was at school (2000s), there's no use worrying about messages from TV, they get it from far more sources than that. I highly doubt that younger viewers are sitting down watching Naked Attraction with their mum and dad anyway Grin

I don't bother but I do get the impression that people think that the only people who don't shave are those over 40.

1DAD2KIDS · 30/06/2017 21:56

Its not prudish pre se to dislike the show. That would purely be down to the reasons why you dislike the show.

Magicpaintbrush · 30/06/2017 21:58

They must be crazy to go on that programme - imagine going into the office the next day and knowing your boss and all your colleagues have seen your foof, or your knob flapping about in all its glory!!! Boak!!!!

emilybrontescorset · 30/06/2017 22:00

I found it quite boring.
There's only so many things you can say about a penis.
It seemed to take all the fun and excitment out of dating, absolutely no mystery left when they went on a date.

WithCheesePlease · 30/06/2017 22:06

I watched it during a period of insomnia last year did it end up giving you nightmares? Grin

Theweasleytwins · 30/06/2017 22:06

Made me feel less weird about my own body

EdmundCleverClogs · 30/06/2017 22:07

donquixotedelamancha, his blatant sexism (which is 'excused' due to the era) and nonsense, long winded passages are two biggies for me. It hasn't dated well in terms of literature, though quite fascinating from a linguistic perspective. There's nothing that interesting about his work, it's just over stuffed and full of it's own importance.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/06/2017 22:15

It's not for me. I don't get the appeal of staring at 6 todgers to decide if I want to date someone.

donquixotedelamancha · 30/06/2017 22:25

@EdmundCleverClogs Sexism, yes. I'm not sure that devalues the artistic merit of the work itself and I certainly think it's silly not to take context into account- its simply wouldn't have registered as sexist at a time when women weren't even allowed on stage.

How are the long soliloquies boring? Some of the deepest musings on human nature in the English language are contained within. Is it not just that the barriers of style and language difference make them too hard to get into? 400+ years ago is like a different country to us.

I will cheerfully admit that reading Shakespeare is hard and therefore can be dull but watching a good performance can be riveting.

EdmundCleverClogs · 30/06/2017 22:36

donquixotedelamancha that's why I say his (or 'his') work is only of interest in terms of linguistics/historical English, rather than the actual content itself.

I will cheerfully admit that reading Shakespeare is hard and therefore can be dull but watching a good performance can be riveting.

That's a bit like saying 'I have some basic French, so struggle to read any books in the language. However good acting in French is enjoyable if you kind of grasp what's going on'. It's all a bit try-hard in my opinion, the idea of if you don't pretend to like Shakespeare then you can't truly consider yourself intelligent or a lover of literature.

Anyway, I'm done with my half of the utter derailment of the thread, sorry!

Italiangreyhound · 30/06/2017 22:37

Easilyflattered I have pubes and no tattoos too, a sentence I never thought I would say!

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2017 22:38

Yes, yes but did William Shakespeare have shapely calves and an enticing penis? Surely those are the relevant questions here.

Italiangreyhound · 30/06/2017 22:39

So sad so many people have decided to ditch their pubes. They look so much nicer and like adults with them.

EdmundCleverClogs · 30/06/2017 22:47

Italiangreyhound, believe me, my lady garden doesn't look 'nice' when grown in. I say 'grown in', I have a bloody weird body that has never (apart from when I was pregnant with my son) grown proper hair. I could go weeks without shaving my legs, they generally only grow noticeable hair around my ankles. Everything grows in patches, I don't even have arm hair! So I shave/tidy to balance it all out, I don't do it for anyone but myself. I'm still an adult, even if I can't grow hair like one!

EdmundCleverClogs · 30/06/2017 22:49

MitzyLeFrouf, he strikes me as the sort who may have had pierced nipples. I wonder if he also had a voice like Ed Milliband Grin.

Italiangreyhound · 30/06/2017 22:52

EdmundCleverClogs I am not saying you are not an adult. Thanks

donquixotedelamancha · 30/06/2017 22:53

"That's a bit like saying 'I have some basic French, so struggle to read any books in the language. However good acting in French is enjoyable if you kind of grasp what's going on'."

I think that's a fair analogy, but the other way around. I can follow Shakespeare in text, but can it's not literature and thus is a bit dull to read; I miss some bits in the speed of a play but its much more enjoyable.

"It's all a bit try-hard in my opinion, the idea of if you don't pretend to like Shakespeare then you can't truly consider yourself intelligent or a lover of literature."

True for many, I'm sure but I genuinely do enjoy it. The plays were a long way from elitist at the time.

"Yes, yes but did William Shakespeare have shapely calves and an enticing penis? Surely those are the relevant questions here."

Well those 17th century trousers left little to the imagination.

EdmundCleverClogs · 30/06/2017 22:57

Italiangreyhound no need for flowers, I'm cool with my body. Plenty are jealous of my freakishly hairless legs and arms (though oddly, not underarms). I'm just saying that whilst yes, my generation do generally like the hairless look, it's not always as clear cut. Plus I know a few women my age who really don't always shave, and become very much less bothered after the age of 25 or so.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/06/2017 23:05

I saw it once, and felt devastated when someone remarked on a woman's 'untidy labia', saying they'd never seen anything like it before. My genitals were never anything the media had informed me I should be ashamed of before, but this gave me a brand new feeling of shame

But there was clearly a woman there with exactly the same fanny as you,why would you feel shame? If anything I'd find it reassuring.

It's boring tbh but I quite like the fact it's not porn bodies- apart from the no pubes thing which is awful and needs to stop!
