To wonder why people do "top-up" shops

Just as the title says really. I've read a few threads where people either mention a fortune doing a top-up shop or mention doing a top-up shop as a job that needs doing in the week.

We shop once a week and buy enough food for the week. We then don't buy any more food until the following week. Other than folks who have very little storage (or possibly very large families?) I can't really understand the need to do a top-up shop. I mean obviously if you want to go and get something different to what you have in, that's fine. But why do it if you see it as a chore?

37 pages about top up shopping? ?????? I can't decide whether to rtft. It must be gripping to warrant that!

Bizarrely enough it is Grin

So many people eating frozen bread! Why would you do that when its so easy to get fresh?

EssentialHummus · 30/06/2017 20:31

and it goes straight from the freezer into the toaster, no-one in this house can tell the difference. I love a good mooch around the shops, but when I wake up and want toast only to find that dH snaffled the last of it, freezer bread is a god-send.

Because I drive past Waitrose on my way home from work and scoop a basket of bargains most days along with a free coffee.
I like fresh food.
I'm fickle about what I'm going to eat - I like being spontaneous.

That's why.

There are only 3 of us - we can't get through a whole loaf before it goes stale. Freezing minimises waste.

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 30/06/2017 20:44

Buy a smaller loaf or eat more bread.

But I was responding to posters that put multiple loaves in the freezer to last the week.

Why would you go to the supermarket to buy more when you can just keep it in the freezer and get it delivered once a week?

scaryclown · 30/06/2017 20:47

All my shops are top up shops.
I buy tins, porridge, pasta, noodles, dried fruit, nuts and seeds, rice and milk once every six months..

RodeoDriveBaby · 30/06/2017 20:49

We get the smallest available.

Not sure what your issue is really, does it matter if people freeze bread?

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/06/2017 20:49

I dont understand what the problem is with frozen bread?! It tastes exactly the same, you are far less likely to waste any and unless you can walk to the supermarket it is far better in terms of food miles/carbon footprint etc. What I dont understand is why people who have the space dont freeze bread, preferring to schlepp to the shops for it three times a week.

When I had a big freezer I would make a months worth of sarnies in one go and freeze them ready bagged up. They defrost during the morning, keep the lunch box cool and taste exactly the same as non frozen!

SleightOfHand · 30/06/2017 20:49

Honestly defrosted bread tastes as good, I wouldn't eat it otherwise.

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 30/06/2017 20:51

It might toasted, otherwise no.
And I guess you're talking about pappy sliced loaves anyway?

Increasinglymiddleaged · 30/06/2017 20:52

It's not that pleasant if it's actually frozen though, I wonder if that's where the confusion is coming from Grin

WTF was in those sandwiches?

PratStick · 30/06/2017 20:52

Bread really does freeze well and good quality fresh bread freezes amazingly which means you can use for more than one day.

PratStick · 30/06/2017 20:54

Bread butter cheese and meat are all freezable. Which obviously means sandwiches made of the above freeze well.

Avoid mayo, all salad

Increasinglymiddleaged · 30/06/2017 20:54

Hahaha bread snobbery. Yes, day to day most people eat sliced bread.

RodeoDriveBaby · 30/06/2017 20:54

Nope, nice fresh bread.

SleightOfHand · 30/06/2017 20:56

What's does pappy mean?

PratStick · 30/06/2017 20:56

You can get 'naice' bread sliced if you ask in the bakery or shop. Otherwise I end up hacking away and it's no use as sandwich material

EssentialHummus · 30/06/2017 21:02

And I guess you're talking about pappy sliced loaves anyway?

With no small amount of irony, I'm talking about artisanal sourdough delivered on a bike by a former newspaper poetry critic, because that's what DH likes and because it comes in whacking great rounds, so I either freeze some or watch it go stale. I slice it before I freeze it, otherwise it doesn't fit in me toaster Grin.

sunshineandrainbowsparkles · 30/06/2017 21:04

People that have never frozen bread/ sandwiches?! You are clearly missing a time-saver. I really pity people lacking resourcefulness. Picnics must be a real pickle!

sunshineandrainbowsparkles · 30/06/2017 21:06

Oh and by 'fresh' do they mean the warburtons toastie crap? Fresh bread my flour.

Spudlet · 30/06/2017 21:09

I haven't rtft because 16 pages (to which I am about to add to be fair) but we prefer to get some bits from the village shop, because it's a handy facility to have and we want to support it, and because they stock really local produce and we like that. So we do a big online order for most things, but pop to the shop in-between times for bread, milk etc. We plan for it so it's not a big deal.

BizzyFizzy · 30/06/2017 21:09

I prefer to shop every day for the food we need within the next 24 hours. Is that a top up shop?
