To wonder why people do "top-up" shops

RedSkyAtNight · 30/06/2017 09:01

Just as the title says really. I've read a few threads where people either mention a fortune doing a top-up shop or mention doing a top-up shop as a job that needs doing in the week.

We shop once a week and buy enough food for the week. We then don't buy any more food until the following week. Other than folks who have very little storage (or possibly very large families?) I can't really understand the need to do a top-up shop. I mean obviously if you want to go and get something different to what you have in, that's fine. But why do it if you see it as a chore?

People just HAVE to have punnet of strawberries or chilled prawns, fresh crusty bread on hand 7 days a week? talk about first world problems! I buy berries once a week(3 types) they get eaten within 3 days but my little darlings will not be bought anymore as there is other fruit to be eaten. Same goes for the one packet of biscuits I buy per week. There is a lesson to be learnt here. Not difficult to see how people are eating too much!

You need to get over yourself dear.

Giddyaunt18 · 30/06/2017 16:46

Not really Rodeo. I'm fine thanks. Bye!

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2017 16:48

Yes banana you ARE the only person on MN who doesn't have a perfect life. The award goes to you!

Is there any need?

DreichAgain · 30/06/2017 16:48

Giddy I certainly didn't say those things so why address your sarcasm to me?

Pagwatch · 30/06/2017 16:49

Marks and Spencer's chocolate covered toffee popcorn.
Oh dear lord.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 30/06/2017 16:50

I can't believe that such an innocuous, dull thread about number of supermarket visits is raising so much angst Grin

DreichAgain · 30/06/2017 16:51

Is it on offer Pagwatch?

Cailleach666 · 30/06/2017 16:52

I would think nothing of doing a top up shop for something like fresh redcurrants and tarragon.

I can't see how that affects anyone else though.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2017 16:54

M&S tartlet thingies from the bakery section are my personal waterloo. I can dodge them when they're £1 a piece, but at price reducing time when they're marked down to three for 50p...............let's just say my resolve wavers a little.

Pagwatch · 30/06/2017 16:54

No idea Dreich.
Offers just let me kid myself it makes economic sense. I'm buying it anyway.

DreichAgain · 30/06/2017 16:55

Mitzy: I will tussle you for them.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2017 16:56

Bizarre isn't it? There'd be WWIII if we started a thread asking people how many times they switch their washing machines on each week.

needsomesunshineandwine · 30/06/2017 16:56

Because we usually run out of few things or fancy stuff to go with what we're having that night for dinner.

GetAHaircutCarl · 30/06/2017 17:00

Why would anyone care how much food anyone else buys or how often?

Seriously?

I don't mind topping up.
I can easily afford it.
Everything gets eaten.
No one in my house is remotely fat.

So...

Pagwatch · 30/06/2017 17:01

Good lord
A tussle in Marks & Spencer

tabulahrasa · 30/06/2017 17:03

"I can't believe that such an innocuous, dull thread about number of supermarket visits is raising so much angst"

Yep, I'm pretty surprised to discover that buying strawberries in the middle of the week instead of with everything else is somehow causing all societies problems...who knew? Confused

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2017 17:04

Dreich you'd have to catch me first. I don't mess around when it comes to M&S white chocolate tarts!

WomblingThree · 30/06/2017 18:06

Giddyaunt18 could you be any twattier?

As you appear to have comprehension issues, I'll tell you again how it works. I can't walk, or drive, however I can do this magical cooking from scratch (yay me 🎉).

We don't have much money. I shop online about once a month and it gets delivered. I put it away in the cupboards, fridge and freezer.

I don't like having my produce chosen by the internet shopping person, so I pootle off to the shop on my scooter and select enough produce to last a few days. Then we eat it. Then, fuck me! We need some more! So off I pootle again.

My teenagers wouldn't dare to clear out the cupboards. I can't afford it. (Did I mention we don't have much money?). If I buy strawberries, it would be a treat for one pudding. Funnily enough, we eat those too.

Hope this helps you to understand an obviously complicated concept 😁

Redredredrose · 30/06/2017 18:07

I found I wasted less food by shopping for the day, or at most for the weekend, rather than doing a weekly shop.

dudsville · 30/06/2017 18:12

37 pages about top up shopping? ?????? I can't decide whether to rtft. It must be gripping to warrant that!

Happy browsing!

PollyPerky · 30/06/2017 18:29

I blame Brexit.

I don't think anyone's mentioned that yet.

YeahILoveSummer · 30/06/2017 19:46

I don't understand, doesn't your bread go stale, your milk go off? Confused

PratStick · 30/06/2017 20:01

'I don't see how a family of 4-5 could keep 5 servings of fruit and veg a day, to last a week, in the fridgdge' Maybe they have a really big fridge, or maybe, just maybe, they're one of those terrible people who don't eat their five a dayLove how any food/shopping thread always drags out the not so stealthy boasting about prodigious fruit and veg consumption with a side order of snide comments about 'well if you don't do top ups you must be existing entirely on shitty beige freezer food'

Ffs Hmm As I said in a pp we are vegetarian so we do need to eat quite a bit of fruit and veg and as the recommendation is actually 10 a day, I though I was being conservative. I didn't realise feeding my children fruit and veg was stealth bragging! Confused I'd love to see the fries that could store that much fruit though!

Increasinglymiddleaged · 30/06/2017 20:21

The milk always has a date of more than a week in advance so is fine. I buy 3 loaves of bread a week and stick 2 in the freezer.
