AIBU to refuse to read certain books to my DD?

DD (aged almost 3) wants me to read Frozen (the book of the film) multiple times every day, and also to sing the Frozen Fever book to the tune of Let It Go (it's horrendous). I've done this patiently for several weeks now. But I'm being driven crazy and starting to lose my self-respect. AIBU to just say no? Or am I being a bad parent, as parenting toddlers is largely about doing boring things to make DC happy...?

There are a few other really badly written books that she loves. AIBU to subtly get rid of them and repopulate the bookshelves with more wholesome classics?

With DS it was 'The Little Blue Train', but at least it was reasonably short and he would vary it. Then DH took over bedtimes and covered the 'Bear Hunt' obsessive phase and then he moved DS on to Anthony Browne and Simon Bartram picture books along with a bunch of stuff we got from regular visits to the library.

DD didn't like being read to until she was about three, so most of what was read to her was DS's choices as DH would read to them both together, although she would get to choose some things which DS would like as well. Although now I come to think of it, I do remember her going through a 'Little Rabbit Foo Foo' phase.

Thomas the Tank Engine had me dozing off as I read it - I used to miss out chunks of it but DS always spotted when I did 'Mummy you've missed a bit" ... zzzzzzzz

the high way rat is awesome. Though again I switch the gender of the rat.

It lilts off the tongue in an effortless way.

love JD

Yanbu.

I detest Pinocchio .... it's just a horrible story. I hid it but turns out we had a second copy! I've hidden that too. I can't bring myself to bin them.

I loved Martin Waddell's Big Bear and LIttle Bear; the whole series is gorgeous, and easy to read, and just lovely. The pictures are wonderful too. www.goodreads.com/book/show/2025742.Can_t_You_Sleep_Little_Bear_

I adore Julia Donaldson as well, but the highway Rat goes on for bloody ever, and of course once is not enough! The Highwayman is one of my all time favourite poems, though, so I don't mind too much. Smile

That fucking one about the beached whale makes me cry though. Angry

Six Dinner Fecking Sid. It's a lovely book but my youngest got obsessed with it and as I'd already exhausted it with his two older sibs it got quite tiresome. I started making up a rude version where Sid did six poos a day in six different houses, the little guy loved that one Blush

You ANBU - I totally feel your pain! I work in a nursery with little 2 yr olds and they ALL love the 'Frozen' soundtrack/aka 'Let it Go'. Ask for it all the time - AAAAH!!! And to make things worse, it's stuck in my head for hours - on the way home, on the way to work.....
Trouble is, little ones love repetition....
Good luck weaning her off this OP, XX

She's mastered doing a wee in the toilet, but she's really struggling to do a poo. We've started singing a poo song to encourage her while she's sitting on the toilet, it goes, "Let it go! Let it go! Don't hold it back anymore... Let it go! Let it go! Do a poo in the loo... I don't care if it's big or small, let the poo come out... The smell never bothered me anyway" and "Do you wanna do a boo boo? Come on, let's do a poo. I never do it anymore, it seems like so long ago, since I did a poooo. It feels a little full up, in my tummy today, I want it to come out... Do you wanna do a boo boo? It doesn't have to be a boo boo... it can be a wee"

Julia Donaldson is a Great Author for children of quite a great Age Range she has written so many good books that you could read one every day (charity shops often have them) The Gruffalo is an excellent one that my grandaughter loves and there are many more that she may want to enjoy trying to read along with you. Hope you sort this out soon it's great that she likes books but I do appreciate the monotony of the same book over and over, have fun, good luck with a new story.

Thanks jeapurs54, I love Julia Donaldson's books too - such a sense of adventure and lovely rhythm of the words.

I've secretly thrown away the Frozen Fever book now, and she hasn't been too upset at not being able to find it. We've agreed to read the Frozen book only once a day, and have started to read some other books.

Thanks everyone!
