AIBU to ask how much what you buy in the weekly food shop and how much you spend!?

I used to do a monthly shop and spend about £90. Freeze all the veg and meat and then do the occasional little shop for fresh stuff. I was probably spending about £110 max a month on food.
All that eating packaged and processed sauces etc. has made me pile on the pounds.
I now want to start eating fresh in the hope to lose some weight. But this is costing about £40-50 a week! This seems like a massive amount to me in comparison to what I normally spend and I don't seem to be getting much food for my money!
What do you buy in your weekly shop and how much do you spend?

The trick is to only eat meat about twice a week. Make lentil based dishes and vegetable based dishes the rest of the time.

it's cheaper and far healthier.

We have a chicken once a week, roasted...then I use the leftovers to make a curry or, if there's not much left, then a soup. I boil the bones for stock after I've taken the meat off.

Other good, cheap meals include a vegetarian bolognaise type dish which I add more veg than you would usually to, and bulked out with lentils.

I also make veg curry and sometimes falafels which we have with a big salad.

Baked potatoes with beans and cheese...and salad again...or with green beans or broccoli.

Veg soup with bread and cheese.

Sometimes we have fish if it's on offer..or perhaps a stir fry if I can get meat on offer...but stir fry is nicer with just veg.

You need to make sure you have a really good herb and spice collection. Things like fish sauce too...good oils...they make all the difference.

£110 a month? Are you single? There are 4 of us, 2 are children, and I spend between £100-£140 a week on my shopping.

Zoflorabore · 30/06/2017 01:28

Around £150 per week 2 adults, 1 teen 1 6 year old and 2 of us are vegetarian.

I spend around £40 on toiletries/cleaning products/treats.
Can't imagine doing a weekly shop for that, how many people are you buying for op?

RadioGaGoo · 30/06/2017 01:37

Around £80 for two, which covers all meals for seven days.

I remember a similar conversation with a couple who were shocked that we spent £ 80 a week on food, declaring somewhat smugly that they only spent £40 per week. However, it transpired that both were buying morning coffees, breakfast and lunch daily at Pret at a cost that far outweighed the additional £40 we were spending in comparison.

@MrsOverTheRoad

The thread asking how much you spend, not what you eat and buy.

araiwa · 30/06/2017 05:42

£0

I eat out

Zoflorabore · 30/06/2017 05:55

Op did ask "what do you buy in your weekly shop and how much do you spend?"

KimchiLaLa · 30/06/2017 06:04

I don't spend that much - around £90-100 per month for two of us, but I've managed to get this down by shopping in Asda and not going in to the store to shop - only going click and collect and online orders. That way I don't add things to the trolley that look nice, but aren't needed. If I had one closer, I would shop in Lidl or Aldi.

I also only buy one meat/seafood option per week, whether it be lamb, prawns or salmon. I buy frozen chicken in bulk and that lasts for ages, we have that once a week.

Also, I am very lucky in that once a week DH eats at my MIL's.

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 30/06/2017 06:13

Family of four, £90 a week.

Wonders71 · 30/06/2017 06:27

Two Adults and one child we spend £90 to £100 per week....i dont drive and only have a M&S and Tesco nearby!

Dewey595 · 30/06/2017 06:43

Family of 4, £800 pm. I do buy fresh, fairtrade, free range and organic. Lots of fruit and vegetables. I do think it's worth it as we eat very healthily, with the odd treat now and then, of course.

NamechangeNana · 30/06/2017 06:50

Family of 4 (two teenagers!) dog & cat. We spend £150 per week (and that's a struggle, shopping at Aldi and cooking from scratch, baking treats instead of buying etc)

user1488721675 · 30/06/2017 07:02

My shop is coming today, £99 for 2 adults and 3 children, that would generally last a week and a half with spending another £30 on top up bits next week, I usually spend around £350-£400 a month on food/nappies/toiletries/cleaning products in total. That's on mostly homemade meals with the odd pizza chucked in. Meal plan this week is; beef & potato curry, honey & ginger drumsticks with potato salad/corn on the cob, hawaiian chicken kebabs, cous cous/salad, vegetable curry, sausage & butter bean casserole, egg, chips & beans, chilli & rice.

Weebitty · 30/06/2017 07:57

two adults, toddler and baby. around 80 on average. live rurally so its either the coop or tesco delivery. that includes nappies. we don't drink

DisneyMillie · 30/06/2017 08:28

We spend about £800 a month - two adults, child and baby and 2 cats. I really need to reduce it!

But we do eat meat / fish pretty much daily and I only buy organic free range meat so that's where a lot of cost is

SongforSal · 30/06/2017 08:33

Normally around 100pw (not including any alcohol I may get for the weekend). That's for 2 adults and 2 teens. Sometimes a weekly shop may cost 50 quid though as there will already be herbs, tinned tomatoes ect in the cupboard so I can make cheaper dinners like Spag Bog, Pasta bake, Snags, mash, Veg and caramelised onion gravy ect....

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/06/2017 08:35

£80-90 per week, 2 adults and an ever hungry ds.

Orangebird69 · 30/06/2017 08:51

Approx £60 a week for me and my 20mo. That doesn't include nappies etc

Gerardbernie · 30/06/2017 09:08

£50 a week on me and 12 month old, including nappies, wipes and formula (which from now she'll no longer need formula, yay!) It was more like £60 until I cut it down to meat/chicken only once a week. I think it's worth it as it allows me to buy all organic. I only buy ingredients and make everything from scratch which keeps cost down too.

TuttiFruttiCutie · 30/06/2017 09:14

2 adults, 12 year old who eats like an adult and a 10 year old + 1 dog.

Between £85-100 in Aldi main shop per week. And an additional £10-20 Tesco for items not available in Aldi. This also includes household cleaning products, toiletries and alcohol 😳

1stTimeMama · 30/06/2017 09:29

I spend between £70 - £100 a week. There are 6 of us, including 3 in nappies and a baby who is combi-fed, so formula is needed too. I meal plan every week, get my shopping delivered so I don't have to trawl the actual shop, and buy as much organically as I can, although the Tesco here is rubbish at stocking organic meat. Neither of us drink or smoke.

My weekly regulars are porridge, weetabix and sultanas, 2 loaves, 3 milk, 2-3 large yogurt pots, cheese, various salad and veg, nappies and formula if needed, then everything else is whatever is needed for that week's meals.

Just me and the cats ( who eat more than me
!)I would say about £15 a week, but of course with the gastroparesis can't eat much anyways. Which is a real bummer as I love food.

Welshmaenad · 30/06/2017 10:24

Mostly crisps and hummus if I'm honest.

About £80.

AceholeRimmer · 30/06/2017 10:30

We spend £130ish a week for 2 adults, toddler, baby and cat and that's mostly made up of fresh, healthy stuff. I did spend the same when I ate crap though but I bought lots more food. I do think it's easier to eat cheaper with a bad diet.. eating cheaply and healthily takes planning.
