I moved the bin yesterday (which is emptied each day!) to find several bugs scattering! They were very difficult to kill, they wouldn't die! I've also found more in a utility cupboard near the bin, they seem to be hiding in the gaps under the skirting, oh and 1 in the bathroom. I feel rather sick not to mention itchy all over at the thought! My house is clean honest!! How do I start getting rid? I've attached a pic for identification if anyone can.

These are definitely a new thing, I've never seen them before.

Looks like a beetle to me

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 29/06/2017 14:52

It's a beetle. Doesn't look like a cockroach at all, don't worry Smile

garud · 29/06/2017 14:52

Doesn't look like a cockroach, no. Maybe a stag beetle? Do you have any rotting wood anywhere near the house?

How big is it?

NoddysBell · 29/06/2017 14:55

Not a cockroach. I speak from experience shudders.

PhilODox · 29/06/2017 14:57

Nah, definitely beetle of some sort, not roach.

Pleasesayitsnot · 29/06/2017 14:58

Oh thank god! Why are they in my house though?? It's a first floor flat, new build. And how do I get rid of them?

All the floor is laminate but shouldn't be rotting anywhere. They are about 1 cm long, 1.5 maybe

OP posts:
gleam · 29/06/2017 14:59

Does it have eggs behind it?

Wawawaa · 29/06/2017 14:59

It looks like a baby stag beetle. Lovely things. Don't kill them! Show your children and take them outside.

Biggreygoose · 29/06/2017 14:59

Just make sure it isn't one of the wood boring beetles.... far more worrying than cock roaches, especially if you have them in numbers.

HappyAxolotl · 29/06/2017 15:01

No, cockroaches have much longer legs and antennae. Your pal definitely looks beetle-ish.

notfromstepford · 29/06/2017 15:03

It's a beetle.
We used to live backing on to fields they'd come in to the kitchen overnight - especially if it was raining.
Chalk or talc round the perimeter seemed to stop them coming in, but we just tended to pic them up and check them back outside.

Pleasesayitsnot · 29/06/2017 15:04

glean that's just fluff on the floor behind it

stonecircle · 29/06/2017 15:05

I sympathise - found a huge stag beetle in my kitchen the other night. Frightened the living daylights out of me! We have a lot of ivy on the outside of our house and I think they come in from there. But we only see the odd one occasionally that has come in by mistake. Sounds like yours are settling in!

Wide0penSpace · 29/06/2017 15:08

If it is a stag beetle please don't kill it, they are an endangered species! ptes.org/campaigns/stag-beetles/

Pleasesayitsnot · 29/06/2017 15:16

I've google pics it's not a stag beetle. Doesn't look like that, I've seen a fair few of these little things now! Shudder. It's not segmented like those pics.

Cakeisbest · 29/06/2017 15:23

it's a beetle, not a cockroach. Beetles fly, which is how they've gotten into your first floor flat.

Pleasesayitsnot · 29/06/2017 15:31

Just found another 1 in th hallway, threw it out the window rather than squashed this one. Got a good look at it living it's definitely not a stag beetle but I'm pleased it's some sort of beetle and not a cockroach!

Wide0penSpace · 29/06/2017 15:44

If you've got loads it's probably worth ringing your local council pest control to see what they suggest.

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 29/06/2017 15:53

do beetles really fly?

Didn't realise they could fly when I put my face right up to it, glad it didn't try Shock

So I've google lots of beetles and not sure which particular type this is or why it's here, maybe best putting some insecticide down where I've seen them and cleaning thoroughly everywhere.

Phew!

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 29/06/2017 17:35

Why?!Confused Please don't kill them before you even know what species they are. For all you know they might be rare! And even if they aren't, are they doing you any harm?

Pleasesayitsnot · 29/06/2017 17:44

They aren't harming me no but it's rather gross to find them crawling about my house and out of skirting boards. I feel all itchy every time I see one and they are freaking out the chihldren too. I certainly don't want to leave it and become overrun with them.
