Tories have done a deal with the DUP. And it only cost 1 billion.

What a bargain.

Hmmm. What shall I do to pass all these shitty laws? I know, I need a majority! Let's have an election so I can get a stronger mandate!

Oh shit, I lost my majority. Don't worry, I can link up with the DUP!

Yay for democracy.

So there IS a magic money tree!

Still cheapee than corbyn bankrupting the nation. Absolute bargain

How is it cheaper? What information do you have to share?

gluteustothemaximus · 26/06/2017 17:11

Goodness me, I would have thought all you lefties would be happy.

Triple lock continued
Winter fuel continues

Just because you support labour, doesn't mean you support ALL policies.

Just because you don't support Tories, doesn't mean you can't agree with one of their policies.

I don't think richer folk should get the winter fuel allowance, and means tested is fairer. But unfortunately means tested often results in a far lower take up, and could hurt the ones that need it the most. I'd make the means testing simpler to stop this happening.

We lefties aren't always happy. Largely because we keep getting called lefty loons, leftards, and my personal favourite, the fascist left Confused

Not only that, but we lefties aren't just one big blob of people that all think the same.

Not speaking for all us lefties, but I don't think anyone here begrudges money for NI at all. We begrudge our libraries have gone, our sure start centres gone, our council budget cut but council tax has risen, our schools budgets have been cut, we are seeing austerity everywhere..yet we have money for...140 million on an election and 1 billion on a deal when they could have opted for a minority government.

Has to be the most expensive general election yet.

From what I read based on the Barnet formula that £1bn will actually cost £35bn! Fuck sake Theresa what are you doing?

MissDuke · 26/06/2017 17:22

Of course I do.... But only a small fraction (3%) of taxpayers are from NI, but get 100% of the benefit, whilst the other 97% from E,W&S get nothing! As one of the 97% I think I have a right to be aggrieved at this.

That makes no sense. The 1.5 billion going to NI is not 100% of all tax payer money collected.

Suggesting there is ZERO money left for the rest of the UK is silly.

Oh yes. There was another thread on which as soon as someone mentioned 'access to decent housing' they were accused of being a Communist.

Thatcher would be proud.

fascicle · 26/06/2017 17:42

If this £1 billion payment to prop up the Tory government is not illegal or unconstitutional then it should be. It certainly shouldn't be paid from public funds.

coconuttella · 26/06/2017 17:44

MissDuke

I'm not sure what it is you're finding hard to understand about my position.

TM agrees to spend an additional £1bn on NI's citizens that otherwise wouldn't have been spent. That £1bn for NI spend will be funded by 100% of us, but only 3% will benefit from it.... all to prop up a minority Government.

If a similar sum was invested proportionately across the U.K., public spending would need to increase by c.£32bn!...

PS I voted Tory in the General Election before you accuse me of being a leftie!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/06/2017 17:45

Actually apparently this doesn't fall within the remit of the formula. Welsh / Scottish governments aren't best pleased.

Dawndonnaagain · 26/06/2017 17:48

all EU citizens have ID cards, you need them to travel into UK for a start
None of my relatives from Spain or Gibraltar have UK id cards.

The80sweregreat · 26/06/2017 17:53

glue, well said.
i begrudge years of 'austerity' when its clear this was just a smokescreen for the Tories to wreck havoc on the poorest in society.
They never change their spots.
I am sure that the ones that voted Tory will shrug and say so what. a few might be alarmed at how it panned out in order to buy 10 votes. To vote them out for good isnt going to be easy however - JC isnt perfect either and to win over 65 seats is still an uphill battle in a mostly Conservative UK. Its still very bleak all round and i cant see her or her party going anywhere for a while.

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/06/2017 17:54

The right wing press has clearly done its job on their soft little brains.

As was pointed out today to an SNP MP in parliament, Scotland have had roughly the same amount in discrete payments outwith Barnett Formula for various projects.
He didn't have an answer to that, unsurprisingly.

Likewise, after various Labour MPs lambasted the govt for making a deal with the DUP, a DUP MP commented on how hypocritical it was, considering previous Labour Leaders had attempted/done exactly the exact same thing.

Gottagetmoving · 26/06/2017 18:12

No money for anything until the Tories want to bribe people to vote with them. It shouldn't even be bloody legal!
Money wasted on an election she didn't need and now over a billion to keep the stupid twat in power.
If Tory voters are ok with this, they are as twisted and despicable as their sleazy government.
The homophobic bloody DUP for fucks sake!!!!

Gottagetmoving · 26/06/2017 18:13

People's need to stop justifying it....it's just wrong!!!

coconuttella · 26/06/2017 18:23

And England?! Hmm

KindleBueno · 26/06/2017 18:27

Anyone from NI that thinks this isn't a 'death knell' to the GFA is either pig ignorant or a bitter unionist.

Look at the extra community funding that was disseminated - turn out it all went to bloody orange halls. I can only assume that most of this 2 billion will be dispersed as unevenly.

The body that is named as being responsible for overseeing the GFA with 'rigorous impartiality' has jumped into bed with the bitterest party in the country fgs.

I am so cross at the entire thing. I'm in a same sex, mixed religion marriage in Belfast. The dup have already damaged and withheld my rights and now this. Myself and DW are now planning to uproot to Edinburgh as we do not want to be a part of the violence that will surely return to our streets.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 26/06/2017 18:27

I don't know about areas of England specifically coconutella, I was just pointing out that it's not unheard of for the devolved administrations getting extra funding outwith the Barnett Formula.

Dawndonnaagain · 26/06/2017 18:29

Attempted is right. However, the fact remains that they didn't, not that that is relevant now. Had they I wouldn't have supported them. Fact is, it's wrong.

LizzieMacQueen · 26/06/2017 18:34

TM should have counter-negotiated and insisted some of that money was invested in Planned Parenthood type of establishments.

I love the idea that by spending money on health and education, you're going to bankrupt the country. Presumably these posters actually prefer a country where you spend 12 hours on a trolley in a hospital corridor because there isn't a doctor to see you or a bed to put you in. And they prefer their children not being able to do art, drama or music in school because the art, drama and music teachers have all been made redundant.
