To want to urge tourists to stay away from North Korea?

After what happened to Otto warmbier I think people should stay far, far away from nk. I understand people want to visit to experience their culture etc but why should we be spending money on a country who would rather us dead? They don't want us there they just want our dollar so to speak.

AmyGardner · 26/06/2017 13:12

marmite it's your arrogance though. It seems that you read a fact or two about NK being not a nice place and felt you could really educate the rest of us.

We already knew though.

BigYellowJumper · 26/06/2017 13:12

pirates So just get over it and have a decet discussion instead of 2000 unfunny posts about taking the kids to Pyeongyang Butlins.

Unadon · 26/06/2017 13:13

marmiteisnice Congratulations on the condescension. How do I become as informed as you, OP?

NameChangr678 · 26/06/2017 13:13

Why not?

I'd love to go there. I bet it's really interesting culturally, and the scenery is stunning. None of us really know jack shit about the place, because all we have to go on is the Western media. I want to see what it's like with my own eyes. Of course it would be in America's interest to make the place sound like shit - any socialist countries with a military are a "threat" to them.

You sound like you've read the Daily Mail and now are screaming "noooo00oo don't go there it's so dangerous!!11!1". Ironically, it's probably one of the safest places to visit because you have to be supervised the entire time.....Otto Warmbier broke the law, hence got punished.

That's like hearing about a couple who got jailed for having sex on the beach in Dubai and yelling "Don't visit Dubai, they hate us!". Or those Australians who got the death penalty for smuggling drugs into Bali. Bali's still pretty fucking popular with tourists! Just don't break the fucking law in a country you're visiting.

BigYellowJumper · 26/06/2017 13:14

OP maybe start a new thread? I for one would love to discuss this so would be interested.

user1471456357 · 26/06/2017 13:14

I have been fascinated by the place for years.
About 15 years ago I had an elderly neighbour who went there on a trip organised by some Christian group, they handed out bibles! What happened to the poor guy has brought back to me how utterly crazy they were!

marmiteisnice · 26/06/2017 13:16

BigYellowJumper it is unfortunate that we cannot discuss this properly. I will not start a new thread though as it will probably spiral in the same way.

NerrSnerr · 26/06/2017 13:16

Name so you don't think the people of NK are oppressed and there are people dying because of the regime? It's all made up by the Americans and the Daily Mail. Ok then.

NameChangr678 · 26/06/2017 13:17

I was actually being very serious. People especially younger adults do actually want to travel to NK as they are fascinated by their ways of life. The fact there are tours shows that it's a very interesting country.

As if some random mum on the internet is really going to convince people not to travel somewhere they're interested in. You sound like one of those concerned mums that stands staring out of the window for their kid to come back from the park.

The one place I wouldn't go to is America. Why would I want to support them and their foreign policies/the way they treat their citizens with any of my money....

NameChangr678 · 26/06/2017 13:19

Name so you don't think the people of NK are oppressed and there are people dying because of the regime?

Does it matter what I think?

Do any of us know? Seeing as we got lied to about WMD in Iraq and many other international issues by Western media, no, I have no idea what the actual situation is like in NK. Which is probably why people visit, to judge for themselves if it's as secretive and oppressive as in the papers.

Do YOU know what it's like? If you think you do, where did you get the info from? Can you confirm anything? Or are you also making judgements based on newspaper articles...

NerrSnerr · 26/06/2017 13:19

You wouldn't want to go to America because of how the people are treated but you'll go to North Korea? You cannot be serious? borgenproject.org/poverty-in-north-korea/

marmiteisnice · 26/06/2017 13:21

Have any of you grew up in Korea?

OP posts:
BigYellowJumper · 26/06/2017 13:22

Yes, we do know. There are plenty of North Korean refugees who tell their stories. There are plenty of biographies, interviews and speeches you can access.

NerrSnerr · 26/06/2017 13:22

We know as much as we possibly can and even if you do visit you won't see the bad side as you'll have to be with two NK tour guides at all times. You won't get a clear view of the country by visiting, we can only ascertain what we can through people escaping (as they cannot freely leave unless very wealthy) or people undercover.

BigYellowJumper · 26/06/2017 13:23

marmite I live in Korea, my husband is Korean. He grew up here, and has lived here his whole life.

BabsGanoush · 26/06/2017 13:23

Oh good, the bullies are out this morning.

BigYellowJumper · 26/06/2017 13:24

babs Right? Why do I read one post like 'we must stop bullying in schools' then read this shit on here.

bubblesagain · 26/06/2017 13:25

None of us really know jack shit about the place, because all we have to go on is the Western media. I want to see what it's like with my own eyes.
You're not going to see anything apart from a prearranged tour, with actor type guides, at special places, no-one sees the real North Korea or interacts with actual locals on the tours.

America doesn't make North Korea sound like shit, it is shit, to find out about the real North Korea read books/watch interviews by escapees, don't give the awful regime foreign currency.

nina2b · 26/06/2017 13:26

Today 12:35 FatherBennyCake

Well, if you don't do your basic research on what a country is like before visiting, and then choose to break the law while there then you've only got yourself to blame really...

That is a deeply unpleasant thing to say.

What the vile North Korean thugs did to Otto Warmbier was simply inhumane. I despise them and all they stand for.

VintagePerfumista · 26/06/2017 13:27

OP- the fact that you started a thread assuming that it was even remotely necessary to tell the massed hordes of MN not to go to NK, is actually quite insulting and shows what you think about the intelligence of these posters.

NameChangr678 · 26/06/2017 13:27

You wouldn't want to go to America because of how the people are treated but you'll go to North Korea?

Absolutely. AFAIK, North Korea hasn't invaded Iraq/Syria/Afghanistan/Libya (insert others) to pursue their own interests and collect oil. North Korea hasn't caused "regime change" in sovereign countries. North Korea doesn't sell weapons to the Saudis that then use them to cause a humanitarian crisis in Yemen. NK doesn't systematically murder black people. NK doesn't charge millions of dollars for healthcare.

Also, I think it would be a far more interesting place to visit as a tourist instead of endless Maccy D's and theme parks.

nina2b · 26/06/2017 13:30

You don't need to have ever been there to know that their cruelty and inhumanity destroyed Otto Warmbier's brain and removed his life and his future. I barely have the words.

marmiteisnice · 26/06/2017 13:30

Big do you like living there?

OP posts:
tasmaniandevil · 26/06/2017 13:30

Namechangr678 I've read some idiotic posts on here but your's take the biscuitConfused

pasturesgreen · 26/06/2017 13:30

Well, fuck me, there I was, thinking NK is a bastion of parliamentary democracy Hmm

Thanks for the heads up, OP.
