Hi all, medium size terraced Victorian. I am struggling to finalise the colour scheme for the walls. I wanted to go with grey walls, but not sure about it as it may make the place look dark and small. Teal and blue have crossed my mind too but not sure..... Please help me.

Love great walls but think u need a brighter colour in parts

DonaldStott · 25/06/2017 18:49

We live in a Victorian terrace and I have grey colour scheme. It can easily take it with the high ceilings. I love it.

empitness · 25/06/2017 19:03

Thank you for your replies. I have been looking at Pinterest and it has confused me even more, because I don't know how to pull things together in terms of mixing and matching accessories. I don't want to replace major things like curtains and carpets..... I need to find a colour that compliments the pre-existing stuff. Any particular shades of grey that are recommended? I have a contractor starting on Tuesday and I still haven't finalised the pain..... I am panicking now

We have Dulux Goose Down in the bedroom, looks fab, and F&B in the lounge, feature wall in Plummet and the rest in Pointing with white woodwork.

wildbhoysmama · 25/06/2017 19:18

Don't panic. What colour flooring/ curtains do you have? I have 1930's terrace with high ceilings and it can take most colours, so Victorian terrace will too.
What to do is go and get a good, few tester pots- raid B&Q tonight- paint the back of old roll of wallpaper / large sheet of paper and blutac them to the walls so you can see what the colors look like in different light with your furniture/ flooring/ curtains. I know it seems a bit of a pfaff but well worth it to get what you're after.
Farrow and Ball now in B&Q as well so really handy. I have just finished painting our hall in combination of Laura Ashley Pale French Grey and Dove Grey and it's subtle and lovely.
Found a darker, fab grey I used on the bathroom tongue and groove - Valspar Carriage Wheel. Valspar have a huge range of their own colours ( and testers are cheaper) and they can colour match any colour. Their superior wall paint is phenomenal as it's scrubbable and great quality- not as chalky as F&B or Laura Ashley but depends what you're looking for.
Apart from grey I also recommend F&B cooking apple green and Crown's Stepping Stone ( a duck egg/ eau de nil colour) both are gorgeous in period homes and go beautifully with wood of all colors and white. Green is very of the moment i hear.
Classic is also blush, goes amazingly.with rose gold/ copper/ brass.

thethoughtfox · 25/06/2017 19:21

OP, I feel your pain. Buying a new house and have never decorated before. I have been considering the exact same colours. Have you looked at Farrow and Ball Hague Blue and Stiffkey Blue?

MrsD79 · 25/06/2017 19:23

Grey all the way baby! My house is totes 50 shades of grey - all the bedrooms landings reception rooms kitchen. Throw in some white silver and different texture fabrics too.

londonmummy1966 · 25/06/2017 19:25

Grey can be a bit tricky to use as it can be quite cold - need to think about the light in your rooms. So a blue toned grey is OK for hallways etc but you might want a warmer shade in a living room. Also bear in mind that blue tones accentuate each other - I painted my sitting room in F&B Parma Grey but it is a big room and all that blue toned grey basically makes the room look as if it is pale blue rather than grey.

Duck egg and eau de nil work very well in period homes - I have these shades in the bedrooms where I wanted a lighter feel. Rooms that get little light can be better painted in a dark colour - my basement dining room/library gets very little light so I just made the most of it and painted it navy blue with white woodwork.

Purplemac · 25/06/2017 19:32

Bright blues are beautiful. This is the colour of my living room wall (obviously it's a feature wall with white on the other walls) and it makes me happy every single day, and has done for three years. I also love grey but am so glad our main room is so bright and not glum!

bridgetreilly · 25/06/2017 19:36

Anything but grey!

But it's hard to say what without knowing what existing colours you're working with on the floors etc.

BikeRunSki · 25/06/2017 19:41

Have you got a wonderful terracotta tiled hallway floor? I grew up in a Victorian terrace with one if these floors, and my parents picked out the blue (stary wallpaper below the dado rail) and cream (paint above the dado). Then later, changed the wallpaper for a cream and terracotta pattern.

No consistent scheme throughout the whole house though!

LakieLady · 25/06/2017 19:51

My friend had Stiffkey Blue in the living room of her tiny Victorian cottage. I thought it would be too dark and overwhelming, but it looked really good. Ceiling, paintwork and the wall above the picture rail were all white, and her carpet was quite a pale beige.

She actually went to Brewers and got them to match F&B Stiffkey Blue in a trade paint and it was a fraction of the price.

I like the grungey colour that's somewhere between gray and khaki.

empitness · 25/06/2017 20:27

Thank you for al your replies. The colours recommended here fabulous and I am trying to see what works. The curtains are multi coloured embroiders and the carpet is plain beige. Have got brown book shelves in alcoves and a black fire place

I would use a warm gray as cool grays can look very utilitarian and cold. A soft brown based gray is lovely. I have it in my home.

Mrsbird311 · 25/06/2017 20:39

Elephants breath by farrow and ball
Very soft and changes hue throughout the day with changing light
I've got neutral flooring and charcoal leather sofas
Gold curtains and gilt mirrors and a little touch of red in another mirror to lift it
Elephants breath is a lovely base colour that goes with anything, I try not to have things too matchy matchy but with neutrals all your lovely things will be showcased

SunnyCoco · 25/06/2017 21:06

I'm in a Victorian terrace too, I've used dulux pebble shore as a basis
A nice light grey goes with everything

I love dimpse.

elmo1980 · 25/06/2017 21:40

I've just redecorated with light grey (polished pebble) everywhere with white picture rails and wood work then pictures with either plain black or white frames. For colour I've got ochre curtains, and the odd purple cushion and throw. Grey is very popular at the moment and i was determined not to follow the trend but i couldnt find anything else I liked as much.

WonderLime · 25/06/2017 21:45

I have just moved into a 1930s house. We have only decorated the master bedroom and are just starting the nursery, but so far everything is brilliant white with whitewashed floors. I'm then going to add in bright colours with rugs, bedding, decor. I think some grey will be added downstairs (polished pebble as someone mentioned before on walls).

PhilODox · 25/06/2017 21:47

I have seen some fab rooms in Victorian houses that are navy blue with one wall mustard, or a very pale blue, such as f&b blackened or borrowed light, with white.
Cabbage white is a good one too- v pale greeny white.
Teresa's Green is good also, changes in the light throughout the day.

I have teal on all the walls of my living room(Proud Peacock Duly ). and stiffkey blue in my downstairs toilet.
Go dark!

Thekissbyklimt13 · 25/06/2017 21:54

Our friends have a Victorian terrace house and did the living room yellow and grey. Sounds awful on paper but it's beautiful and calming once you see it

empitness · 25/06/2017 22:05

Thank you all for your time and replies. I can see light at the end of the tunnel now 😁. All the suggested colours are absolutely fab. I am going to get the testers tomorrow and see how I get on.
At the moment all rooms are painted different colours. I want the whole house to be painted the same, but some rooms are darker than the others. I need to find a colour that goes with the general decor and brings light too.
