Just that really. Your favourite books/authors from when you were a child. What's the one book you believe every child should read? I'm trying to build up a bit of a library for the dc's and need some inspiration. Smile

Goodnight Mr Tom
The family from one end street
Watership down
Anne of green gables
The machine gunners
The iron man
Stig of the dump
Private, keep out

I also loved the phantom horse series and follyfoot but neither of my children would give them a second glance. DS was entranced by skullduggery pleasant and Darren Shan when he was 12, DD loved Cogheart and we're reading the sequel together now (age 10)

I used to love
Thursday's Child by Noel Streatfield
Tom's Midnight Garden
& The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe

LostInTheColonies · 26/06/2017 05:38

Famous Five
River of / Valley of / Ship of (etc.) Adventure
The Five Find-outers
Willow Tree Farm series
In fact, almost anything by Enid Blyton, except the Wishing Chair which is rubbish

Chalet School
Nina Bawden (anything by)
Noel Streatfield (ditto)
"Fell Farm" books - and I just found these on Abebooks for DD, to my delight and her complete disinterest Grin
The Little White Horse

So many good memories.

Was the doll's house one Five Dolls in a House by Helen Claire or Rumer Godden's The Dolls' House?

Mustn't forget all the other Rumer Godden books- Little Plum etc.

So many of my childhood favourites on here!

I loved all the American/Canadian ones set in Victorian/Edwardian times: Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Little House series, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, the What Katy Did series (my favourite was What Katy did at school), Daddy Long Legs (for teens).

Also Enid Blyton of course (as PP said, not the Wishing Chair - there was a character called Chinky!). I have been collecting all my favourites for my DDs when I see them in charity shops. DD1 (7) sadly doesn't seem to have any interest in reading, but I have just read 4 year old DD2 The Enchanted Wood which she loved, so I am hopeful.

Misread this as "classic threads" and came to big up fam Blush. As you were.

jeapurs54 · 07/07/2017 16:38

Depending on the Age I always enjoyed Enid Blyton she wrote stories for the very young and the older child Famous Five, Secret Seven, and the The Mystery Series. The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe was a favorite of mine. The Wishing Chair, and any Roald Dahl books were always enjoyable. Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is always a favourite.
