To think Hotpoint are shitheads

2015 my under warranty Fridge Freezer started to play up. As it was over the Xmas period and peak tumble dryer gate they told me I had to wait two weeks for an engineer to look at it.

I pointed out it was definitely broken as it was smoking. And therefore somewhat dangerous. I unplugged it, and got rid. Losing the fridge and contents.

When I further complained they insisted I keep the fridge in situ in my kitchen for an engineer to look. End of.

They wouldn't accept photos, or any other solution. I told them it was a fire hazard and they STILL expected me to keep it in my home for two weeks if I wanted it repaired or replaced.

That was two years ago. Having seen there response to Grenfell and that they are only NOW suggesting people check their appliances I'm disgusted. Sad

How many other people have dealt with Hotpointbeing unreasonable, I know when I mentioned this on here at the time loads of you had had issue with them.

I will buy hotpoint (or associated brands) ever again. We had a washer drier for 4 years which broke 5 times in that time.

We have a fridge freezer where bits keep falling off. We had extended warranty (a con granted but I was young at the time) but despite 8 phone calls and 3 letters they never actually sent out the replacement parts.

A dishwasher lasted 2.5 years before pump burnt out. I hadn't realised they were basically the same as Indesit, who I knew were crap from my student days.

I'm now able to afford more expensive brands and hope this will be reflected in the quality/durability.

I read somewhere that fridge/freezers are a common cause of house fires. Presumably because people don't turn them off at the socket as they might with other appliances.

HoneyDragon · 24/06/2017 12:42

This is the level of response I kept getting when I over a six month period repeatedly asked them why they thought a 28 day window for a basically broken fridge freezer, was acceptable. And particularly one that was smoking merrily and overheating.

Same response each time.

Of course you couldn't inspect it, it was a fire hazard and TWO independent engineers advised us to get it the fuck out the house asap.....but not good enough for Hotpoint.

I think the fact that they keep sending out recall type letters is to cover their arse. If anything goes wrong they can say 'we did warn you ' and wash their hands of it.

Dreadful company- maybe everyone should write to the CEO , bombard them with complaints .

FanaticalFox · 24/06/2017 12:56

"As we wasn't"

WEREN'T

if they can't even complete a correct sentence then its no wonder we can't trust them!

HelloCanYouHearMe · 24/06/2017 12:56

Dont be so sure Diva....

My DBs Bosch dishwasher went up in flames in a few months back. The family were in bed - DB heard a pop and thought he better go and investigate and was met with a kitchen full of acrid smoke and flames coming from the dishwasher

BeeFarseer · 24/06/2017 12:57

They are terrible. We have appliance cover with Domestic and General too, and our Zanussi condenser dryer broke fairly recently. All the replacements they offered were Hotpoint, as they have a contract with them to supply their products, even if the original insured product was from a different manufacturer.

I point blank refused, and ended up taking a cash settlement worth £100 less than a product replacement.

FUCK Hotpoint.

HoneyDragon · 24/06/2017 14:18

The fact that they send letters AFTER they've supposedly fixed it worries me even more.

and they also manufacture Ikea's own brand appliances.

Thanks for this info, I didn't realise and will look into it before purchasing.

We have a v. narrow spot for our fridge (council house, limited options for refitting kitchen etc, not that we want to), so our fridge options are fairly limited. I had seen that Ikea also do one that fits in the space.

This thread has been very useful. The fridge we have started rusting when it was only about 2 years old and Indesit said it was our fault for not cleaning it properly or some nonsense. I don't clean my fridge that often but I've never had one rust on me before...

Time for a new one I think.

I live in a small block of flats (9 flats, 5 stories) and I can't do anything about the neighbours' appliances but I can sure as hell do something about mine!

No cladding thank God! And fabulous HA.

aquashiv · 24/06/2017 14:29

Hotpoint/Indeshit/Whirlpool all the same an engineer actually admitted to me they aren't meant to last.
I have a washing machine left that's it once that goes I'll never touch them again.

chumpchange · 24/06/2017 14:30

Is Hotpoint actually Whirlpool?

I also have a Whirlpool washing machine which I'm about to replace. Works well but is getting rusty and water/electricity seems like a bad combination to me!

I've already said to DP a while back that I don't trust it and not to leave the house when it's on. (I know you shouldn't do that anyway, but I mean not even pop out the back for ten minutes.)

Seems like there's some appliance research and spending in my near future!

DoloresTheRunawayTrain · 24/06/2017 14:31

Companies will always do what they think they can get away with to preserve their profit margin. That's why I'm really concerned any time a politician pops up promising to simplify regulations or cut through red tape. It invariably means standards will be dropped and the potential for accidents will increase. I am positively twitching at what's going to happen with the bonfire of red tape that has been promised with the great repeal.
I really don't want to see a huge accident the likes of Bhopal in this country, just because cronyism and profit margins were put before safety.

chumpchange · 24/06/2017 14:31

Cross posted! Thanks aquashiv!

insancerre · 24/06/2017 14:33

I think the issues with the dryers and fire risk only became known after ikea had started to use them for their own brand
If it wasn't got ikeas checks a lot more people would be dead or have had their houses destroyed by fire/ smoke

HoneyDragon · 24/06/2017 21:09

I've just googled the model number of the affected fridge freezer, it looks the same as mine was Sad I don't for a minute believe I will have been the only person fobbed off by Hotpoint over this ....and now look how many people have died.

OP posts:
TheGoblinKing · 24/06/2017 21:36

Wouldn't you have been able to take them to small claims court over the freezer, OP? If you had two independent reports, I would have - and charged them for the wasted food, the court fees, and your time chasing them as well. I once took a company to court in similar circumstances and they actually settled out of court. If it happened again I'd do the same. Especially if their crappy goods almost burned your house down!

Pestilentialone · 24/06/2017 21:47

Thanks Honey I vaguely remembered you fridge freezer rant and wondered if it was the same model as Grenfell.

HoneyDragon · 24/06/2017 22:19

I wish I had done now, just so they had to acknowledge it was dangerous Sad

OP posts:
chumpchange · 24/06/2017 22:55

My Indesit one is this, model is called Baan 13 so you can't compare them but I swear it's the bloody same Hmm. Going to have to replace it.

MrsG841 · 24/06/2017 22:59

Yanbu.... I help run a group on Facebook (hotpoint dryer fire risk) we help advise people who have faulty dryers but we have also been assisting people with other faulty appliances of theirs as well.... Believe me I fought for 8 months about my tumble dryer

apostropheuse · 24/06/2017 23:08

My two year old hotpoint washing machine caused a fire in my kitchen. I wouldn't have trusted a repair so cut my losses and replaced it with a Zanussi. I would never buy any hotpoint appliance again.

soloula · 24/06/2017 23:45

The claim period for small claims court is quite long OP- five years I think, in Scotland it is anyway. Well worth looking into if you have all the evidence and paper trail to back yourself up. Sounds like quite a clear cut case, regardless of the Grenfell fire. A lot of big companies quite often just pay rather than pay for an expert to attend so you may not even have the hassle of a court visit.

HoneyDragon · 24/06/2017 23:47

I'm not bothered by the money tbh just disgusted to think that they think profit is more important than people.

OP posts:
amazingtracy · 25/06/2017 00:02

I would never buy another hotpoint or related product again! crappy product and woeful customer service. I can't wait to replace my shitty fridge.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 25/06/2017 01:47

They have been shocking for years.

I have cause to buy lots and lots of appliances I used to use hotpoint now we don't and double check every one we go with to make sure they are not the company behind the name
