Just that really I have one DS who's 7, curious what time your similar ages children go to bed?

TIA

Ds 4 6:30/7

Dd just 7 goes up about 7:15/7:30 and is allowed to read until 8pm. She doesn't seem to need much sleep.

Usually awake for the day around 7.

AragornsManlyStubble · 24/06/2017 07:05

Dd 5 and Ds 7 go at the same time of 6.30-7
Dd 8 goes at 7-7.30

Wake up is 5-6 in the morning though dd 8 is still asleep now!

Pickerel · 24/06/2017 07:06

DS1 age 11 - 9pm
DD age 9 - 8.30pm
DS2 age 7 - 8pm

Troika · 24/06/2017 07:14

Dd1 11 goes up at 8, allowed to read until 9
Ds 9 goes up at 8, allowed to read until 8.20
Dd2 1 7/7.30

Tbh I don't really check what time the older two read until (as long as they're quiet!), just have different times so dd1 doesn't feel hard done by. Ds does usually go to sleep earlier.

They both go up early as dp and I sometimes go to bed at 9! (Dp gets up at 5 and I'm up in the night with the baby)

Troika · 24/06/2017 07:16

Dd says all her friends stay up much later than she does and some don't even have a bedtime. They're still in primary school!

LittleBooInABox · 24/06/2017 07:26

That's the argument I'm having, my friends all go to bed later than me. He's usually in bed at 7-7:30 but playing (not with permission) until 10-11pm. Wakes up exhausted.

Id try putting him down a bit later. Aounds like 7 is too early for him and he isnt tired so plays too long, although 11 is obviously too late

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 24/06/2017 07:29

You could even try keeping him up to 11 for a few days and he will gradually be so tired he will fall asleep earlier.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 24/06/2017 07:32

Out of interest the ones whose dc go to bed at 6.30 are they in daycare? I work full time and pick dd up at 5.45-6pm. So it's about 7.30 by the time she's asleep. She's 4.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 24/06/2017 07:35

4 and 6 year old. Lights off is by 9. The 6 year old settles to sleep quite well. The 4 year old has always needed less sleep and can often be heard rumbling around until 10. As long as they're in their room and being reasonably quiet, I leave them to it. They get the chance for 10.5 hours sleep which is age appropriate and are energetic and healthy.

There's no rush in the morning as school is very local so they need to be up just before 8. A later shift to the day works for us as it gives them more time with DH so we can eat together. When they were in full time childcare they weren't home before 6 so we had time to unwind, play and eat rather than plunging immediately into bedtime. Now that's not an issue, but we have a couple of activities in the week that mean we're not finished and in the house before 7.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 24/06/2017 07:42

My bedtime was 7 for way too long. I remember following the passage of time by the theme tunes of programmes... The Bill, Van De Valk... I'd often still be awake long past 9 reading by street lamps. I'd then wake at 6 anyway and have to tip toe around the house for ages as no one rose before 7 in the week and 9 at the weekend.

Bedtime routines are important, but they do need to fit with a child's sleep pattern.

My low sleep 4 year old needs chance to burn out to be able to rest and shut down.

GreatBigPolarBear · 24/06/2017 07:51

My 5 year old goes between 7 and 7.30 and is usually fast asleep within minutes.
8 year old is supposed to be in her bed by 8 but struggles to fall asleep-often awake until at least 9.30

tigercub50 · 24/06/2017 07:57

DD8 is really struggling with settling at night, partly due to seperation anxiety. We found we were putting her to bed too early & actually she's still often in bed by 7.30. I felt a bit embarrassed yesterday when a younger boy called round at 7.45 & DD was in bed! She often doesn't drop off til gone 10 so we are going to try making sure she gets some exercise & maybe make bedtime 8pm.

Cheerybigbottom · 24/06/2017 08:04

My 5 year old is in bed for 8 after his story, fast asleep in 5 minutes and back up at 6.45 usually. 6.15 today of course as it's the weekend and I let him stay up til 8.40 last night Grin

sailorcherries · 24/06/2017 08:05

My son sleeps for about 10 hours max, normally around 9. He doesn't need more sleep and we've been to various sleep clinics in order to get to where we are nowm

He will be 7 next month and showers between 8.30 and 9, followed by a story. Lights off by about 9.30 and asleep by 10. He then wakes between 7 and 8 with no issues.

PussCatTheGoldfish · 24/06/2017 08:09

My 7yo goes around 8ish. She is usually asleep by half past nine, but honestly it could do with shifting back a bit as my 6 yo copies her and she really needs her sleep!

Winter is much easier though and they will be asleep quicker.

Quite honestly I am out of patience by that time of night!

MillieMoodle · 24/06/2017 08:10

DS1 is 6 and his bedtime is usually between 7.30 and 8.30. We aim for lights out by 8pm but some days it's later. Fridays it's usually 9 ish as he has football practice until 7.30pm and we usually eat after that. He's usually up around 6.30/7ish in the mornings.

DS2 is 9 months and his bedtime has to fit in around our usual routine so it varies from 7pm to 9.30pm at the moment, although we usually aim for about 7.30-8ish. He's usually up around 6am.

My parents used to send me to bed ridiculously early; apparently I always needed my sleep Hmm I'd lie in bed awake for hours. I'm talking a 6pm bedtime when I was 6, 7pm bedtime when I was 10, 8pm bedtime when I was 13! I'd easily still be awake at 10pm, not even tired. They are now far less strict; on the odd occasion they've had DS1 to stay he's gone to bed around 9pm!

HateSummer · 24/06/2017 08:13

Usually quite loudly exclaiming they're not tired but this changes to hushed once they get sleepy. Smile

isupposeitsverynice · 24/06/2017 08:17

My ten year old goes up at seven to read and lights out by half seven or eight depending. Having observed his behaviour when he is rested vs tired, and the behaviour of other peoples kids who apparently "don't need much sleep", I've got to be honest and say I think the vast majority of kids don't get enough sleep and I do think it comes out in the behaviour. Naturally, the parents of those kids won't be on mumsnet, only the ones who are beautifully behaved at all times regardless of sleep habits Wink

TooGood2BeFalse · 24/06/2017 08:23

DS1 who is 5 has a story in bed about 7.45 then lights off at 8.It usually takes him about 5mins to fall asleep and unless something is bothering him, he'll wake between 7-7.30. If we are ever out late on the weekend or have friends round, 9 is the absolute latest he can do before he ASKS to go to bed Grin

DS1 is 11 months a bit of a git.He starts the day between 5-5.30, will have about a 2 hour nap in the morning but refuses to sleep in the afternoon. So he ends up falling into bed between 6.30-7. I'm sure he is sleep deprived but nothing seems to break this pattern Confused

toptomatoes · 24/06/2017 08:23

DC1 (10) goes up at 8.30, reads until 9.

DC2 (just turned 7), reads for a while after we've read with him then lights out at 7.30.

DC3 (4) goes at 7.

missyB1 · 24/06/2017 08:24

Ds aged 8 goes up at 8pm lights out at 8.30 he's usually asleep straight away. I agree with pp that a lot of children probably don't get enough sleep, I suspect a lot of teachers might agree too.

TooGood2BeFalse · 24/06/2017 08:24

Argh obviously I meant DS2 is 11 months

WorkingBling · 24/06/2017 08:40

Ds (6) is a nightmare. On a good day, lights out is 8:30 and he's asleep by about 9:30. He then sleeps until 7:40 or 7:45 so gets 10-10.5 hours sleep which is fine.

On a bad day however, he will still be awake at 10:30 or later. And he is then clearly tired the next day. We have tried making bed time super early or super late to fix things but nothing.

But I have come to ththe conclusion he really does need only 10-10.5 hours a night. And because he sleeps in a bit, that gives him the option to go to bed a bit later.

Dd 2 is usually lights out around 7:45 and asleep by 8 or shortly after. She also only wakes up about 7:30 and has a good 90 minute nap during the day as well.

Notso · 24/06/2017 08:42

My 6 and 5 year olds are in bed for 8ish, it ends up being later in holidays and weekends.
5 year old has been taking a while to settle and then sleeps in later until 8:30 on a school day, 6 year old often falls asleep in minutes but gets up 6ish.
12 year old is in bed for 9:30, later at weekends though sometimes he takes himself up at 9 with a book and a brew and 17 year old when she feels like it.
I can certainly tell in all their behaviour if they haven't got enough sleep.
