But we all do exactly that.Grin

We have lived in 4 cities( various areas according to income at the time) and 3 towns. We have gone where the work and commute takes us. I thought everybody did.Confused Are we just mugs or something?

Dishwashersaurous · 22/06/2017 18:09

Many of those affected are single parents. I know it's a cliché but it takes two people to make a child.

Surely the real scandal is that a situation has arisen in which one parent is able to financially abandon their child.

speedywell · 22/06/2017 18:10

But some people manage to get on the upswing of that cycle, but many many get caught on the downward spiral.

With every apsiring mover coming in the rents and house prices go up for others so nothing is solved, just moved.

And just because you did, doesn't mean everyone can. If you don't have the education/ capability to rise above a minumum wage job it can be very hard. Many people have extended family to care for as well so moving away would mean that person becomes dependent on the council/ state.

And another thing to look at the effects of individuals, but another when you model the behavour across millions.

Being a teacher and moving away is a poor example to use as clearly not everyone can be a teacher and with it the improved prospects.

Bit of a offshoot but the judge is a very 'interesting' man indeed.

PortiaCastis · 22/06/2017 18:13

Yep it takes two people to make a child but it takes one person to upsticks and leave the mother of said child even within a longstanding marriage

makeourfuture · 22/06/2017 18:16

Tories hate the rule of law don't they?

FizbotheClown · 22/06/2017 18:18

No many people do not have extended family to care for. Some do,those with elderly parents say in their 80s or a child with a disability which will go across all incomes.

If they were that dependant I doubt many would be working anyway.

Dishwashersaurous · 22/06/2017 18:18

Portia - that's my point exactly, that within the framework of the law it is possible for a parent to abandon their child. That is simply wrong.

FidgetSpinner · 22/06/2017 18:21

But moving costs a fortune! How are people on benefits going to afford it? What if you're he!ping to care for a relative? I need to live near my disabled mum as there is fuck all services to help care for her. Why should people be forced to move miles away from their families? What if you've got disabled children (like I have) and they have ehcp's? Try getting a school place in another authority. Try moving care packages to another LA, impossible.

FizbotheClown · 22/06/2017 18:27

So the majority in the middle have to but not those on benefits? So basically you want cities with the poorest and richest in but the huge majority in the middle can sod off and sort themselves out? Or do you want social housing and benefits for those in the middle too to enable them to stay put? Where is the money going to come from and what happens to the less desirable areas nobody wants?

PortiaCastis · 22/06/2017 18:34

I had to runaway with nothing but a broken arm and a dd so what's worse me getting murdered or asking for help to go on. Im ok now but please never ever think you're above someone who gas to ask for help

MsHooliesCardigan · 22/06/2017 18:37

Divide and rule works every time. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the magic money tree yet.
So many people have swallowed the austerity narrative hook, line and sinker. We are the 6th richest country in the world.
But nobody gets angry about the super rich or companies that make billions of £ a year avoiding tax. Let's just leave the minions to squabble among themselves while the Philip Greens of this world sit back and laugh.

FizbotheClown · 22/06/2017 18:38

You're deflecting from reality and relavent questions.

tabulahrasa · 22/06/2017 18:57

"You can rent a 2 bed in many areas for less than £500 a month"

I'm the other end of the country from London, I could buy a 3 bedroom house for around 100k, 130k if I want a slightly nicer area.

2 bedroom flats are all more than 500 a month.

So I'm guessing there's really not that many around anywhere.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/06/2017 19:02

The whole financial structure of our country is completely messed up though. Working people should not be earning such poor wages that they have to rely on benefits. Companies need to be paying decent wages instead of focussing on maximising profits for their shareholders.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/06/2017 19:05

"I'm a single parent. I support the benefits cap"

No wonder these cretins keep getting in. If people support cuts against themselves and their own kind

GloriaGilbert · 22/06/2017 19:07

Being a single parent does not meant you are on benefits spider. Can't believe I actually had to say that but there you go.

AndNowItIsSeven · 22/06/2017 19:12

Gloria no but it means you should have some understanding of how difficult it would be if you lost your job , being the sole breadwinner.

FizbotheClown · 22/06/2017 19:15

So if you're a single parent you're incapable of being prudent and planning for pitfalls or even getting another job quickly.Hmm

PortiaCastis · 22/06/2017 19:18

I'm a single parent and I'm astounded at some of the attitudes on here.
When I had my wedding pictures taken I didn't know what was round the corner neither does anyone else !

MarciaBlaine · 22/06/2017 19:27

We are talking single parents of kids under 2 here. I have a good job, but could not afford the rent plus childcare for one child on my salary.

FidgetSpinner · 22/06/2017 19:28

Fuck me there are some twats on here who haven't got a fucking clue!

MarciaBlaine · 22/06/2017 19:28

Sing prudent doesn't work if you are living ha d to mouth anyway. I can't understand why so many seem not to grasp this.

Dawndonnaagain · 22/06/2017 19:31

Benefits were always intended as a short-term safety net when they were invented, and to me they shouldn't be a lifestyle choice.
I'd be very concerned about a teacher who appeared to make major generalisations and didn't bother researching subject matter before making pronouncements.

We could come up with an imaginative solution, building caravan parks near farms so people who can't live within the benefits cap can go live there to do fruit picking. Even provide them free childcare when they are working. So, enforced Labour, the workhouse but a touch more rural than usual...

Dawndonnaagain · 22/06/2017 19:32

Fizbo, those in the middle are more likely to have greater job opportunities, ergo making it easier to move in some circumstances.
