It looks like I need to replace my washing machine. It isn't draining properly and is leaving grey residue marks on the clothes. I've had someone take a look at it (twice!) and he cannot find anything wrong with the pump or other obvious parts. Given that we inherited the machine when we bought the house 6 years ago (and it wasn't brand new then) we've probably done quite well out of it. But I have no idea what I'm looking for in a new machine! I'm not looking to spend crazy money. Just want a reliable machine that does all the basics really. Any recommendations?......

We've got a Bosch WAQ283S1GB. Worked well for a year or so but keeps developing a damp smell which comes back a few washes after a maintenence wash.
Switched from liquid to powder, but smell eventually comes back. I've read its due to one of the internal drums being made from plastic rather than metal like they used to be.

Hickdead, mine is a 9kg load too. I'm not sure of the model but I will have a look later when i'm home. What model is yours?

Another Samsung eco bubble, I've had for 2 years and happy with it except from the annoying tunes.

Redsrule · 22/06/2017 17:43

Love my Smeg, looks beautiful and washes amazingly. But I have to say that I always, in the past, used Hotpoint and found them very efficient and reliable. Off to worship my precious...

ASDismynormality · 22/06/2017 17:45

I have a John Lewis washer. /dryer. It's brilliant, made by AEG and came with a 5 year guarantee.

SoMuchWaiting · 22/06/2017 20:44

I love my Samsung ecobubble Grin The way it can be customised is great, select your own 'my cycle', delay finish, love it!

Freddofrog Like you I have a toddler and the child lock locks every button bar the power one. It is annoying but thankfully dd tends to like turning the dial above pressing the buttons.

Basic Miele.
They are brilliant and last years (especially in soft water areas)

They don't have all the bells and whistles but they are workhorses that do their job brilliantly and just won't let you down.

One lower range Miele will outlast 2, 3 or even 4 other brands. We had our last one 14 years in a hard water area and seen other people spend much more because they had to replace theirs every 4 years or less.

LarrytheCucumber · 23/06/2017 11:55

I live in a very hard water area, but my machines have lasted about 8 to10 years caily.

cailyaclara · 23/06/2017 22:39

That's fantastic, Larry! It's nice when the machines don't go tits up!!

Most people I know have had three/four Zannussi's/Hotpoints/ Bekos etc in the time we had our first Miele. My Mum and Dad's last one lasted 19 years in a softer water area. I've found them really worth the money. Plus, you get excellent warranties. We've had ten year ones on our for free.

GreenHillsOfHome · 23/06/2017 22:54

Would never EVER get a Hoover again.

We've had ours for about 5 years and it's an 11kg top of the range (at the time of buying) and pricey.

Luckily, I took out cover for a fiver a month because after the first year it's had had problem after problem...we've probably had 10 call outs in the last 4 years. The tumble dryer broke, it had a leak, a broken drawer, door wouldn't open, wouldn't spin/drain right, the main electric board popped. Different error every time.

The last engineer told me that Hoovers are known for having a handful of machines that just seem dodgy from the off. You might get a good one or you might be unlucky and have a shit one.

I would never ,never buy an AEG appliance again. The Fact is that AEG no longer exist as a company. The German company of that name folded years ago. The brand was bought by Electrolux. They do keep the two brands separate though as they market AEG as higher end stuff at higher prices but really, they are all made by electrolux.

I bought a condenser dryer AEG a few years ago. I paid a lot of money for it thinking it was a quality item. How wrong i was. With very little use, itv packed in after about 16 months. AEG didnt want to know and totally blanked me. I ended up dealing with the supplier under the SOGA and got it repaired for labour charge only. It needed a new pcb control module price at least £90. A few years later, pop,,the very same thing happened. The machine is only occasionally used. Not like i have 3 kids and doing washing every day. Total junk,,would never buy again and rubbish customer service..

Another vote for Miele.

It will last you years and years. I've just purchased my second one (previous one lived for 16 years in a house of 7) I got the WMH122WPS. Expensive outlay, but you get lots of freebies on the Miele website, and a long guarantee.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 30/08/2017 14:08

Google 'Who makes John Lewis....' and you will find out which companies supply the machines to be branded by John Lewis, they are not a special make.

I checked before buying our Bosch as I didn't want a heap of crap with the JL name on it. I still ended up with a heap of crap with Bosch on it.

Another vote for Miele here. I needed one that would take large loads as I own a holiday cottage and need to wash bedding/towels weekly as well as our own family washing. The model I bought was expensive but takes 11kg and has a 10 year guarantee. It's really quiet and does a great job. For a fifth of the price, I could have had a different brand, but having read lots of reviews, many of those lasted barely 2 years, so buying 5 of those in 10 years, it worked out the same cost overall (minus the hassle of swapping machines).

Miele machines were installed in the retirement apartment laundry room where my MiL lived. There were 3 machines for 50 flats so they got quite a hammering but were utterly reliable.
