AIBU to ask for your washing machine recommendations?!

It looks like I need to replace my washing machine. It isn't draining properly and is leaving grey residue marks on the clothes. I've had someone take a look at it (twice!) and he cannot find anything wrong with the pump or other obvious parts. Given that we inherited the machine when we bought the house 6 years ago (and it wasn't brand new then) we've probably done quite well out of it. But I have no idea what I'm looking for in a new machine! I'm not looking to spend crazy money. Just want a reliable machine that does all the basics really. Any recommendations?......

John Lewis own brand. They're made by AEG apparently but a bit cheaper. Just got a washer dryer and it's great an extremely quiet. Had a Beko one before which was really good too.

DramaAlpaca · 21/06/2017 16:44

I always go for a lower specification model of one of the 'better' brands, like Miele, Siemens or Bosch, reasoning that if it has fewer bells & whistles there is less to go wrong.

Current one is a Siemens which is going strong after quite a lot of years (can't remember!) despite doing plenty of loads every week.

kaytee87 · 21/06/2017 16:46

Anything Bosch, brilliant make

GrumpyOldBag · 21/06/2017 17:15

If you can afford them Miele are brilliant and last for ever.

Also very quiet, which can be a bonus.

Freddofrog1983 · 21/06/2017 17:44

I have the Samsung ecobubble which cleans clothes really well. The only thing i'm not keen on(unlessi'm not setting it properly) is the child lock. Although the wash cycle can't be changed with the child lock on, my son can still switch the machine off. My last Hotpoint would beep if anything was touched. Does anyone else have this problem with their Samsung?

Montsti · 21/06/2017 19:31

Samsung eco bubble 12kg - love it!

brexitschmexit · 21/06/2017 19:47

Ooh child lock feature sounds great! Didn't know that existed. Have 3 young DC, smallest one especially is a knob fiddler (oo-er!) so would be a handy feature for me....

Anti-recommendations also helpful, thank you!

I did have a Bosch years ago in a previous house that was very good. Current one we inherited is hotpoint and has been great so far, just think it has reached the end of it's useful life (I suspect it's the electrics which I think would be expensive to rectify....) I think it's probably 13+ years old to be fair and we got it for free so have certainly had our money's worth.

Another vote for Bosch. Mine is 10 years old and works just as well as the day I got it. Never had anything go wrong with it.

The 15 minute quick wash is all that most stuff needs, and it spins better than any machine I've owned. And it's pretty quiet.

HickDead · 21/06/2017 20:21

Samsung Ecobubble 9kg, absolutely in love with it. So many programmes to choose from, cleans really well and has a 1400 spin on it.

My last one was a Beko, bloody awful piece of crap that was, they should all be banned. Had the engineer out to it 7 times in 2 years. In the end I gave up and bought my lovely ecobubble.

HickDead · 21/06/2017 20:24

Freddofrog No we don't have that problem with ours and our 2 yr old tampers with it every time it's on. Which model of ecobubble do you have?

SofaToad · 21/06/2017 20:29

After 3 Bosch machines that were good we now have one of the new Vario Perfect ones.

It has lasted just over 2 years before it stopped heating the water. It won't complete a cycle, just keeps on going until you manually stop it. Have to cheat and pour a kettle of hot water in during the cycle.

This will be our last Bosch of any kind. We have a crappy Bosch fridge too. The problem is that they are made in Poland and various other places and are no longer the German quality that people think they are.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 21/06/2017 20:33

Samsung Ecobubble too. It plays a tune when it's finished. 15 minute quick wash. I think the most recent Samsung have a feature that lets you pop in stray socks that you drop on your way to the machine.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 21/06/2017 20:43

My DD has a Samsung Ecobubble 10Kg - it's fantastic. I'm definitely getting one when my ancient one finally gives up the ghost.

speedywell · 21/06/2017 20:45

Another for a Zanussi.

I have a 10kg Lindo 500 and LOVE IT!!!

Flexible programmes, not complicated, massive loads, quiet. Spins & cleans clothes well. Reviews say very reliable.

Has a jet wash thingy which promises to keep the liquid drawer clean :)

Paid £300 ish from the Co-op recently but prices seem to go up and down daily on all these appliances. Was a bargain and I'd pay more for it.

fanfrickintastic · 21/06/2017 20:48

Which miele do people recommend? Because they vary wildly in price!

Macsmurray · 21/06/2017 20:53

Have a Maytag top loader here. It's bullet proof and will take a king size duvet no problem.

Beautifullymixed · 21/06/2017 20:55

Another vote for a Samsung ecobubble.
I had no washing machine for six weeks after an electrical fault, and was handwashing and using the launderette.
I chose the 7kg model in grey, and I love it!
It cleans beautifully, has a daily 1 hour wash, that I chuck it all in , then choose the temperature accordingly.
It feels solid and well built (unlike flimsy hotpoints imo), and it looks very stylish.

Even better, I got five years free parts and labour, with my purchase from John Lewis.
It's on until 30/6/17. A great peace of mind.

Did I mention that I really love this machine....❤

www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-jlwm1412-freestanding-washing-machine-7kg-load-a-energy-rating-1400rpm-spin-white/p669432

I have had this machine for a couple of years now.
It's pretty quiet, brilliant at washing & is a tiny bit slimmer from front to back than most machines so it doesn't stick out further than the worktop like every other machine I've ever had.
All the text on the front of the machine is under transparent plastic as well, so you can actually clean it without wearing off the programmes!

I would definitely buy a JL washing machine again.

I also like the fact the standard guarantee is longer than from most other places.

MatildaTheCat · 21/06/2017 20:59

I bought my Meile when the DC were creating the most vast amount of washing and was sick of white goods breaking down. It came with a ten year parts and labour guarantee.

It worked like a dream and did a stupendous number of filthy loads until, after 9years and 11 months, it broke down. Out came the man who fitted a new motor and said it should, hopefully be good for many years to come. I love it.

Bought a JL brand WM for FIL recently and he's very happy with that.

apostropheuse · 21/06/2017 21:02

Zanussi. I had one that was thirteen years old and it never broke. Family of six, so constantly on. Only changed it to get a bigger drum. Bought a hotpoint, which caused a fire after two years. Back to a Zanussi and it is great.

StandardPoodle · 21/06/2017 21:03

If you feel you can run to a Miele, I'd recommend one. Mine has the 10 year warranty - a great machine.

RoseRuby26 · 21/06/2017 21:07

Love my Samsung eco bubble

Goodbuycat · 21/06/2017 21:21

I have had an Indesit, hotpoint, Bosch, beko and now have a Samsung ecobubble. Best thing I have ever bought, EVER! And it plays a little tune when the cycle is finished, instead of the horrifically annoying beeping that my other machines had.

fussychica · 21/06/2017 21:27

AEG Lavamat 1200 spin for me. I love mine. Variable temp and spin speed on most programmes and a 20 min quick wash. Don't know if they are the same now, mines about 10 years old.

Bunnyjo · 21/06/2017 21:33

Another vote for Miele, in my opinion they really are worth paying extra for. We've had our Miele nearly 20 years (!) and it is still going strong.
