To be cross at neighbours kids being noisy at night?

Sleepthief84 · 21/06/2017 10:51

First ever post! As the title says AIBU to be annoyed at our neighbours letting their 2 and 4 year olds play in the garden up to 10pm at night shrieking, squealing and (last night) throwing those bloody little bangers that explode when you hit the ground? OH says I'm Oscar the Grouch, but it's grinding my gears - should I say something? Especially given the heat and the fact that DD (age 1) goes to bed at 6pm and we need all the upstairs windows open to cool the house down - her room has been 29 degrees this week! Should say that we live on a quiet street and it's just our two houses together so we always try our best to be considerate to keep noise to a minimum especially in the evenings Angry

If you are friendly with them you could definitely mention the impact it is having on you in a subtle way, if you think they will care. In general though, it's not their fault it's hot and they can be in their garden and make a noise at that time. I would only ever feel comfortable complaining if it was after 11pm and the noise impact was loud...

supermoon100 · 21/06/2017 11:04

Completely unreasonable and selfish of them. Kids of that age out playing till 10? Crazy. You should definitely say something

Funnyface1 · 21/06/2017 11:16

Those small children shouldn't be out playing at 10pm and I can understand how it would be disturbing you.

Mention it but be nice about it, it's all you can do really.

GahBuggerit · 21/06/2017 11:22

10pm is a bit late even by my standards but technically they aren't doing anything wrong. Have a word about the bangers maybe, ask if they can stop them after 8pm for example but thats about all I'd do.

Otherwise get black out curtains and have them shut in the day to keep the room cool, get a fan and shut the windows.

GahBuggerit · 21/06/2017 11:26

Well tbf it snot that they SHOULDNT be playing out, just that we wouldn't have our kids out that late. They just parent differently, there is no rule that says a 2 and 4 year old should be in bed before 10pm and it wont do them any harm as long as they are getting enough sleep.

My 2 at that age were up until about 10pm and would zonk out immediately. Worked for us. My friend OTOH who was PO faced about my lack of routine forced her 2 up to bed at 7pm and tore her hair out going backwards and forwards getting them to be quiet until...........about 10pm! Go figure!

10am? You should try living next door to my neighbour running around screaming until 4am

ChinaRose · 21/06/2017 11:38

Can't get my 2 year old in bed till 9.30/10 recently due to light nights. 6pm sounds like a dream. We enjoy light nights, all our neighbours do. Put a fan in baby's room it will drown out outside noise

Biscusting · 21/06/2017 11:41

My four year old is tucked up sleeping happily by 7:30pm normally, but the 2 year old would be delighted at the prospect of playing out until 10pm. I guess they're all different though.
Surely they can get them to play more quietly at least? Bangers and screaming are a bit much.

Seenoevil · 21/06/2017 11:50

It's really non of your business how late the kids are up, it's so hot and there kids might be struggling to sleep so keeping them up later could Be easier. Kids are going to be making noise and having fun, I wouldn't tell my kids to be quiet while in the garden playing because you don't like noise, it's not like it's 2am and there having a party!

Lottapianos · 21/06/2017 11:53

Dear god, there's always someone with the 'none of your business' line. Its her business because she lives next door!

This would drive me potty OP. You're not being unreasonable at all.

I love the entitlement that people feel, to do whatever they want, whenever they want. How's about a bit of consideration for the people you live around? Keeping your kids up - totally up to you. Throwing bangers and making a lot of noise until 10pm? Fucking selfish.

Gini99 · 21/06/2017 11:57

Really? I always remind my children that there are neighbours enjoying their gardens and so to play considerately. I wouldn't let them shriek and scream at any time. That doesn't mean that they have to be silent but consideration for others is an important part of living in a community and a vital skill for life.

hellomoon · 21/06/2017 11:57

I have got no idea what just happened there!

Gizmo79 · 21/06/2017 12:01

I was getting grumpy about the two little girls shrieking outside my neighbours house, luckily only visiting grandchildren (I bloody hope so anyways!) that went on until 9pm.
My kids go to bed at 7pm and 8pm, and my 4 month old is rather hit and miss (any time between 8-10). And guess who got woken up by a particular shriek.
I totally sympathise with the OP as it's bloody anti social in this heat when everyone has to have their windows wide open just to cool the house down slightly.
What I really hate though, is the kids outside my house vary between the front and back gardens, so nowhere is safe. Bah humbug.

ThanksMsMay · 21/06/2017 12:01

I'd mention the bangers and see if that clues hen in to how noisy they're being.

With windows open everywhere you really hear what the neighbours get up to and sometimes you just don't think

Sleepthief84 · 21/06/2017 12:04

I have no issue with what time they let their kids stay up until - that's up to them! Wouldn't suit me but not my problem. I do however have an issue with them making a screaming racket outside until 10pm on some of the hottest days of the year when everyone else needs to have their windows open and they persistently wake my baby.l not only her either, I've wanted to go to bed early (well reasonably, like 9:30/10) this week as baby has been unsettled overnight due to heat and I'm knackered and have been unable to do so until they take them indoors (my bedroom window is right by the fence so thy are not far off being directly under my window).

ohforfoxsake · 21/06/2017 12:06

Just go and ask them nicely.

brasty · 21/06/2017 12:15

Of course it is too late to be making noise outside. People still have to work in the morning.

RB68 · 21/06/2017 12:15

I have no problem with others kids being up and out till around 10 when things cool off a bit but it is probably the bangers that are an issue along with squealing.

reawakeningambition · 21/06/2017 12:21

everyone is grumpy in this heat. I'd leave it....

KnickersOnOnesHead · 21/06/2017 12:36

I had neighbours who constantly complained about my kids making noise in the garden, no matter what time of day it was.
It was draining and stressful letting them play out as I was always telling them to be quiet, don't make a noise, don't scream, giggle, talk too loud or squeal.

In fact they complained about the trampoline squeaking at one point.

Thankfully they moved out about 4 years ago and now my kids are able to enjoy themselves in their own garden.

I'd probably mention the bangers, but kids making noise is part and parcel of having kids and them enjoying themselves.

Hissy · 21/06/2017 12:39

My neighbour told my DS and his mate to keep the noise down the other night, the boys didnt think, and tbh, neither did i. I said to the neighbour of course it was ok to ask them to be quiet, and i then sent them up onto playing ground a little bit away from the houses.

Your neighbour should understand if you ask them...

fingers crossed :)

Hissy · 21/06/2017 12:39

the bangers are definitely OTT and one would hope that they would see this.
