Very inappropriate Amazon sponsored link on search for children's books

AIBU? typed in 'books for 13 year old boys' as I am searching for a birthday present for my soon to be teenage nephew. On the first 2 pages of the resulting search were 2 sponsored links to crotchless knickers!!!! How on earth does Amazon justify the appropriateness of such items in the midst of a list of children's books. I had always assumed that there were checks and controls in the coding of these sites which would mean that such a search would not link across to such items. Clearly I am very naive. I have clicked on the 'report inappropriate advert button' but are unsure of what exactly happens next and if Amazon actually have the time or inclination to actively follow up all such reports, given they have no means of contacting you back with their conclusion.

I always thought these were based on past searches... Can someone more enlightened than me wade in?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 21/06/2017 09:47

Usually the searches are tailored to you and based on what you search for.

So if you, or your DH, has searched for lingerie on amazon before, lingerie will appear as an advert (even if you/he deleted the history of it).

PenSylvester · 21/06/2017 09:48

Is there any way that you/your partner/anyone else has been looking for them online? Not sure about amazon, but a lot of websites use cookies which target adverts to what they think your interests are.

X-post

DramaInPyjamas · 21/06/2017 09:49

Sponsored links and ads are almost always based on previous searches

caffeinestream · 21/06/2017 09:49

Adverts are mostly linked to your search/browser history.

Sounds like someone in your house has been looking at crotchless knickers!

SleepFreeZone · 21/06/2017 09:50

Ooooops 😂

sonjadog · 21/06/2017 09:50

The adverts are based on your search history. Stop looking at crotchless knickers and the problem will go away!

TenForward82 · 21/06/2017 09:51

Well, he IS a 13 year old boy...

troodiedoo · 21/06/2017 09:51

Hehe

FishInAWetSuitAndFlippers · 21/06/2017 09:51

Grin Grin they are definitely based on previous searches Grin oh dear op.

Shelvesoutofbooks · 21/06/2017 09:52

So op, what colour were the crotchless knickers you bought?

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 21/06/2017 09:54

Yeah, sorry but ads like that are tailored directly to your own searches, they are never random.

Have you been looking for saucy lingerie OP?? Grin

ClashCityRocker · 21/06/2017 09:55

oh dear indeed 😂😂😂

MissionItsPossible · 21/06/2017 10:06

You may have just ruined your birthday surprise, OP? Wink As others have said, adverts are based on past searches and algorithms. The adverts you see are not the adverts everybody else sees. Someone in your household has searched specifically for those knickers!

JiminnyCricket · 21/06/2017 10:09

Hey, I work in the industry and advertise sponsored products on Amazon on behalf of a lot of clients.

Your ads are served to you based on the previous searches linked to the account you logged in with.

Hope they didn't chafe too much ;)

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 21/06/2017 10:09

blame your cookies not amazon

LeannePerrins · 21/06/2017 10:18

This is amazing.

Slimthistime · 21/06/2017 10:20

oh sorry OP but this gave me a laugh this morning

Amazon don't decide to put crotchless panties in a child book search, it's based on usage from that computer.
