Very inappropriate Amazon sponsored link on search for children's books

AIBU? typed in 'books for 13 year old boys' as I am searching for a birthday present for my soon to be teenage nephew. On the first 2 pages of the resulting search were 2 sponsored links to crotchless knickers!!!! How on earth does Amazon justify the appropriateness of such items in the midst of a list of children's books. I had always assumed that there were checks and controls in the coding of these sites which would mean that such a search would not link across to such items. Clearly I am very naive. I have clicked on the 'report inappropriate advert button' but are unsure of what exactly happens next and if Amazon actually have the time or inclination to actively follow up all such reports, given they have no means of contacting you back with their conclusion.

OP posts:
QueenOfRubovia · 21/06/2017 10:23

Yup. I can confirm that all the adverts which appear on my screen are for items I've searched or already bought, or items very similar.

Electricaid · 21/06/2017 10:23

Grin please come back and tell us who searched for crotchless pants.

DanceTheBlues · 21/06/2017 10:23

scottishdiem · 21/06/2017 10:24

Oh dear. You or someone else looked for those and Amazon remembered....

So either the OP doesnt come back due to embarrassement or this thread gets moved to relationships as OPs other half is searching for something OP does not approved of.....

HulkJuice · 21/06/2017 10:25

Sponsored links and ads are almost always based on previous searches

Exactly this... perhaps someone in your household has been searching something very similar.

rizlett · 21/06/2017 10:26

I wonder if middle has spoilt her birthday surprise? Grin

blueskyinmarch · 21/06/2017 10:28

So who has been searching for crotchless kickers OP? Grin

7461Mary18 · 21/06/2017 10:29

I am afraid you have just outed yourself as a regular searcher for crotchless knickers or someone else has been on your phone or computer. I would image most 13 year old obys are interested in crotchless knickers unless there is something wrong with them so I would just be grateful of the boy's interest.

unlucky83 · 21/06/2017 10:29

Isn't this the reason people get followed around by adverts for things that are mentioned on MN and people follow links to/search for - pearl thongs springs to mind - or penguin bollards....
Get an adblocker or use a private window in future Wink...
Although I still find Amazon are particularly annoying for this - you still get things you might be interested in when you are logged in based on past searches/purchases - but in my case it is usually things linked to something I have bought DCs as Christmas presents that came from 'Santa' .... not crotchless knickers!

MoonfaceAndSilky · 21/06/2017 10:30

No no no!!!
I've just searched the same on amazon and crotchless knickers has come up on mine as well. As well as a 5 year diary and a child's portable float top! I'm the only one that uses my laptop and I know I haven't been searching for crotchless knickers Grin

LeannePerrins · 21/06/2017 10:30

Crotchless knickers are the new penguin bollards.

ItWasNotAFart · 21/06/2017 10:32

I can feel the OP's burning face from here Grin

SleightOfHand · 21/06/2017 10:34

The haunting continues....

BumWad · 21/06/2017 10:34

Aaah it's come up on mine too! Poor OP. Also getting dry nights...

I can feel the OP's burning face from here

Presumably the other end is nice and cool though.

NellieBuff · 21/06/2017 10:36

Well just because we could my team carried out an ad hoc piece of analysis . So unless we have all been searching for erotic underwear something is amiss in Amazon. Out of a team of 15 each one of us (using various search terms) all had a link to erotic underwear of some sort or another - including the undies.

DorisMcSweeney · 21/06/2017 10:37

You are in good company - Gavin Barwell MP made a fuss on twitter a few years ago about a Labour press release with accompanying ad for 'Arab Girls'. Much embarrassment when it was pointed out to him that this was based on his search history.

Therealslimshady1 · 21/06/2017 10:37

I got the same ad, and defo never searched for them ever!

JaneEyre70 · 21/06/2017 10:38

Oh dear I think I'd be checking the internet history Blush. Your searches are stored as cookies so will bring up items you've looked at before.

SpearmintTea · 21/06/2017 10:38

I'm stalling making final decisions on building stuff, so I went to Amazon, entered the same search and got the same result. I'm the only person using this tablet and browser, so it must be an Amazon thing not a search history thing.

GinIsIn · 21/06/2017 10:38

Don't get your knickers in a twist OP..... Grin
