To REALLY dislike bedtimes in this hot, light weather?

Tell me it's not just me!! On my own tonight, DS5 has been pretty good apart from a strop because he wanted to eat a yoghurt in bed no chance but DD (just 4) is being a challenge to say the least, been up about 6 times since lights out at 8 with just general pissing about Angry

They usually go to bed great but since this hot weather every night one or the other has been an absolute pain!

AIBU to ask you to tell me what's going on at bedtime in your house to make me feel better!

I totally feel your pain OP! Husband has been out at bedtime for last week or so and a week more to go. All due to him carrying on what he did as a youth. He's 35 FFS!
Anyway both DC are taking it out on me and being little sods. DS will only fall asleep on me which is too hot and he likes to scratch and pinch at me.
I can't leave the room until he's asleep. Think it won't be long now and then I'll have to go and not scream whilst sorting out DD who won't be able to sleep and keep telling me it's too hot!!!
Argh!

MrsELM21 · 20/06/2017 20:37

Argh indeed!! Sitting in the garden now awaiting my next call from madam, tomorrow night they won't be able to sleep because of the bloody forecast thunder!!

Black out blinds.

Hiphopopotamus · 20/06/2017 20:40

Any massive reason why your DS can't have a yoghurt in bed? I often eat toast in bed - don't see how I could tell my kids they couldn't eat something in bed if they wanted. There's so much pointless authoritarianism over kids on this site! 'Because I'm an adult they have to do what I say'. It's sad actually

user1472334322 · 20/06/2017 20:42

Totally with you op! Bedtime takes about two hours at the moment and I have to stay in with ds2 until he goes to sleep which could be anytime between 8 and 9. He's just fallen asleep now. I miss that extra little bit of quiet time! Ds1 still awake!

peachgreen · 20/06/2017 20:44

@Hiphopopotamus Because kids don't need sugar right before they're about to go to sleep, one assumes.

Madbum · 20/06/2017 20:45

My 1 year old has been taking 90 mins to get to sleep after her bath the past few nights, she takes breast for a bit then rolls about on my bed sticking her bum in the air then slaps her belly rolls back for boob then repeat until she finally conks out it's doing my head in!😩

MrsELM21 · 20/06/2017 20:58

Interesting question Hip I'd actually say I'm on the more casual side of parenting and in our house you can have a snack etc in bed whilst you are reading or whatever

But once it's 'lights out' and you're supposed to be going to sleep then you can't get back up 10 minutes later and start asking for a yoghurt! Once it's bedtime, it's bedtime!

MrsELM21 · 20/06/2017 20:59

PS I never eat in bed!! Grin

hipho

Frankly I'd say, bed is for sleeping and a table is for eating.

I think it's pretty rank to be eating in tbh, and why would you want to sleep in a crumby bed.

furryelephant · 20/06/2017 21:02

It's awful isn't it AngryDD is 6 months and only falls asleep on me and will only sleep on my bed Envyfar too hot for it but she doesn't seem to care Hmm

Hiphopopotamus · 21/06/2017 02:08

MrsElm - I get that you've imposed that rule on your kids, but surely we've all gone to bed at some point and decided we actually still fancy a cup of tea, or a quick snack, or we just can't get to sleep so we potter a bit! Surely they're entitled to the same feelings.

(Genuinely not being goady - I just honestly find it very odd some of the 'rules' we impose on our kids)

My toddler settled ok-ish initially but has been up and down since at least 1.30. Both she and DH now snoring away in our bed with no room for me. Going to try lifting her back to her room but she's getting a bit too big to carry easily!

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/06/2017 02:57

Finally my chance to be the house-keeping-judger. FOOD in BED? Bleugh.

faithinthesound · 21/06/2017 03:03

Unless you're planning on calling social services on OP and subsequently adopting her children, I don't see what your continued challenging of the boundaries she has set for them is achieving.

And it IS goady. Despite what you thought was a nice pre-emptive "I'm not being goady, but...", you ABSOLUTELY are being goady. (I might have given you once, but twice? No.) It's like people who say "Not being racist, but... [something racist]." You knew damn well it was goady, or you wouldn't have felt the need to preface with the arse covering.

MrsELM21 · 21/06/2017 11:52

Wishes she'd left out the yoghurt but I didn't realise it was so controversial Grin

FuckingSausageFingers · 21/06/2017 12:23

Hiphopopotamus you're assuming that these "rules" are just for the kids. What about people who think that eating in bed - kids or adults - is disgusting? Or for parents who know that a yogurt in bed = yogurt all over the bed?? I don't eat in bed. Ever. So I won't be letting my kids do it either. It's none of your business and if you want crumbs and yogurt in your own rank bed then go for it, but don't berate the op for her heavy-handedness on this issue as I think you'll find you're in the minority on that particular point.

Also, like a pp has mentioned, people with good oral hygiene don't eat sugary snacks - or anything else for that matter - so soon before bedtime. Dentists will advise nothing but water once teeth have been brushed at bedtime.

kaytee87 · 21/06/2017 12:26

Ds 11months has been going to sleep fine (Luke warm bath, black out blinds) but then getting up at 4am and demanding to lie on top of me to sleep until I turn into a sweaty mess Sad

kaytee87 · 21/06/2017 12:29

Any massive reason why your DS can't have a yoghurt in bed?

Um because it's bad for their teeth, they'll get it all over the bed, its pretty rank to eat in bed.

Hiphopopotamus · 21/06/2017 17:48

Sorry for derailing the thread OP - despite what some posters think, I genuinely wasn't trying to be goady - just musing about the differences in how we treat our kids compared to the rights we assume for ourselves. I am a little puzzled that people think yogurt in bed means yoghurt smeared everywhere! How do you eat?

kaytee87 · 21/06/2017 18:34

Most 4 year olds aren't the tidiest of eaters...

YesMilk · 21/06/2017 18:46

I'm just picturing the carnage of letting 4yo DD eat a yoghurt in bed Shock

Surely even without the teeth/ mess issues, getting up 'in the night' to eat is just a terrible habbit surely? Definitely not one I will be inflicting on my kids.

Now off to start the bedtime battle Grin

iveburntthetoast · 21/06/2017 18:46

We're in NE Scotland and I hate the bright/hot weather. At this time of year, it barely gets dark at all! It feels unnatural to have bright sunshine until 11pm and then bright again at 4am. DD1 hates it too.

TeachesOfPeaches · 21/06/2017 18:46

I'm a single mum with an 18m old and just let him stay up until he is too tired so around 8.30pm.
