To be dreading the inevitable

Induction. Tomorrow I'm being induced due to being 42 weeks. I'm terrified of it due to figure etc like 90% emergency C-section rate and a much higher chance of things going wrong in general so I really don't want to be induced.

Any advice on how to kick things off? This is my last chance to go into labour before induction and I'm desperate. Help!!!

Stress worked for both of mine. I went in for induction very scared and I started while I was waiting to be seen. The 2nd time I thought my dog was dying as she couldn't stand up or walk. Also heard if you think something is pushing down from the top of your bump it can help.

oneburgerofham · 20/06/2017 19:55

No advice on how to kick things off, but I was induced 3 times, twice because of medical needs and once because I was 42 weeks.

All 3 times went smoothly, 4 1/2 hours, just under 2 hours and then 2 1/2 hours, so a bad experience isn't inevitable!

Good luck! Flowers

kitkatspiderrat · 20/06/2017 19:56

dont worry too much if thats possible. ive had 3 inductions due to lazy shites. 2of them had no problems at all, 1 took just a few hours, the other was about a day tbh.
now the 3rd i did end up with a section but this was because i was being induced at 36+5 due to GD and then mid scan (3 hours into induction and i knew id felt her move) she went back to her fav position of across my belly so i made the choice to have a section and not trying to turn her.
i know of 5/6 friends who have had recent inductions and not 1 has had to have a section

RaeSkywalker · 20/06/2017 20:02

90% seems really high, based on my (incredibly unscientific) observations... I know 3 women (including myself) who have been induced in the last year. All had uncomplicated vaginal deliveries.

I felt very anxious about induction too, but it was honestly a really positive experience in the end. And I got DS at the end of it 😁

How things go well for you.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/06/2017 20:03

I had one pessary induction (two doses) and one sweep. Both went smoothly, the sweep being very quick, no further interventions and no complications. I didn't have any form of pain relief with either, so it's not always even more painful. Best of luck!

Pickerel · 20/06/2017 20:04

Sex worked for me!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/06/2017 20:05

Btw the NHS website states a figure of 22% requiring c-section so nowhere near 90%

Pippiphooray · 20/06/2017 20:05

Don't panic! I've had two inductions for post dates babies...tried everything to get them to come out on their own accord, but not to be. Both normal deliveries, quick and problem free. I think you go from 0-100 quicker than a 'natural' labour...but having never not been induced don't quote me! Which makes it seem more painful, but I think it's just that you don't get the warm up time. Midwives are great, trust them and go with it. You'll be fine. Take a good book!! I got very bored waiting for the kick off!!

RandomMess · 20/06/2017 20:08

I had 4 inductions all went smoothly even though 2 took a long time and ARM to get going. Didn't need any assistance to deliver no tearing.

Amanduh · 20/06/2017 20:09

I tried every trick in the book. Nothing worked.
I had an induction.
I didn't have a c-section, nor did the 3 women who had inductions whilst I was there!
Please try not to worry!

CatsCantFlyFast · 20/06/2017 20:12

Unhelpful but Hmmat lazy shites. You do know it's your body that is responsible for labour and not the baby?

Helbel82 · 20/06/2017 20:14

I was induced. Didn't need the pessary as was already dilating but did have the drip and after waters were broken my dd was born in under 6 hours. No assistance needed and no tearing at all, just a graze. Did have epidural though which I would recommend having put in as early as possible.

Supersoaryflappypigeon · 20/06/2017 20:15

As a PP has said, it's around 22% EMCS. I had a failed induction and a calm semi-elective c-section. Please don't panic. I was in a room with 4 other woman who had also been induced and they all had natural births.

pawpatrol123 · 20/06/2017 20:16

I had the drip and my waters broken as things weren't progressing from early labour. A little over an hour and a half later I was holding my baby. It's not all negative.

TheSconeOfStone · 20/06/2017 20:16

I was induced with syntocin with both my babies due to waters going and not going into labour. Two uncomplicated vaginal deliveries. Needed stitches but that's because both inherited their father's big head. I wanted natural births but things don't always go according to plan. Good luck.

ButtMuncher · 20/06/2017 20:22

I think you're more likely an induction being successful when you're post due date, compared to being induced pre-due date - the number of sections in my experience is higher pre DD because quite simply, despite induction reason, baby is quite comfy Grin

No advice but good luck. Mine ended in a section but I was 37w and induced for reduced movements so pretty much the opposite of your experience Smile

Merkin - don't clutch pearls too hard, I think PP was joking Wink I always joke my son was lazy because I was in hospital so much for reduced movement, so it's probably a term of endearment, my dear WinkGrin

CruCru · 20/06/2017 20:26

I was induced for both of mine (gestational diabetes). Be prepared for it to take a while - take a load of books etc.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 20/06/2017 20:27

I was induced at term + 10 (standard here - they would have been OK with me going another day or so but I was fed up). Nothig much happened for a few hours then it was 2cm to birth in 20 mins. (Third baby though). They were very painful 20 mins but I gave birth in a couple of pushes on all fours and walked the 10 mins home with dd in a (newborn-safe) sling 6 hours later.

Good luck. It will probably be fine and a CS isn't the end of the world :)

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 20/06/2017 20:29

I thought the CS risk was 50% with inductions but I get it.
Deep, poky sex can work (with yourself if you please), orgasms as effective as actual sperm min the vagina in my experience (and my friends'). Also, nipple stimulate like crazy!

ollieplimsoles · 20/06/2017 20:30

Another positive induction here, on off labour for days, induced with a gel thingy at almost 42 weeks, started off straight away, totally manageable on just gas and air and didn't take long at all- it was a lovely experience!

Just go with the flow, try not to panic and if you feel like you are panicking/ can't cope- ask for help, their are no heroes in labour!

Iris65 · 20/06/2017 20:33

Please don't push down hard on the top of your bump as suggested earlier. It is dangerous for both you and the baby for all kinds of reasons.
And yes, accidents happen and babies survive all kinds of falls/knocks and kicks. That doesn't mean that you can press/push or otherwise try and manipulate your baby in utero!

Cagliostro · 20/06/2017 20:34

Ah bless you, it's daunting but it's just kick starting a natural process.

If you can, try and stay upright/moving as much as you can while you're waiting.

Best of luck :)

Iris65 · 20/06/2017 20:35

Ooops. Major misread of post - of course visualising may help!

eeniemeenieminiemoe2014 · 20/06/2017 20:36

I had a vbac induction that took a grand total of 23 minutes to end up with baby in arms, entirely natural.

they arent all awful

Feilin · 20/06/2017 20:41

Induced before due date (day before) baby born day after due date. Active labour lasted 7hr 51 min. Born at 5.51am
