To think all tower blocks should be demolished.

Rather than fitting sprinklers in old blocks should they all just be condemned and the residents quickly relocated.

Thank goodness we have all those houses to put them in. Otherwise this would sound ridiculous and stupid

SantanicoPandemonium · 20/06/2017 18:49

Hahaha you're funny Grin

GeillisTheWitch · 20/06/2017 18:49

Quickly relocated where? Hmm

TheBakeryQueen · 20/06/2017 18:50

I agree actually. Don't care how ridiculous it sounds. Would you want to live in one? I wouldn't.

PlymouthMaid1 · 20/06/2017 18:50

That was my first thought too user. With our enormous population it seems more likely that we will have to build more.

Witchend · 20/06/2017 18:51

I assume you're thinking of offering them a sleeping bag and a doorway to sleep in as you couldn't possibly have the idea we have enough houses.

Siwdmae · 20/06/2017 18:51

Yabu and short sighted in the extreme. Duh.

Southernc0mfortmirror · 20/06/2017 18:52

Erm, I own my flat. Would someone pay off my mortgage? Otherwise I'd have a £70,000 debt and nowhere to live!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/06/2017 18:56

Knee jerk reaction much?

Where do you want people to go?

We need more, but better designed and built.

Jupitar · 20/06/2017 18:59

We don't actually have s shortage of housing, apparently there's 1400 long term empty properties just in the area by the Grenfell flats, we do however have s shortage of properties for people to live in.

Most of the people in these high rise flats do not want to be relocated elsewhere as they want to remain near their friends and family, and there isn't room to just build houses, so the other option is to force the owners of these land banked properties to sell up, or have a house price crash, that would work at getting them to sell up.

NotACleverName · 20/06/2017 19:01

Tower blocks are not the problem, YABU.

SaucyJack · 20/06/2017 19:03

Yeah, YABU.

Has it occurred to you that people might not want to be forced out of their homes?

WorraLiberty · 20/06/2017 19:07

'Quickly relocated' Grin Grin Grin

Littlechip · 20/06/2017 19:10

Tower blocks have been housing huge numbers of people since the 1960s. There's been a devastating fire in one of them in 2017. It doesn't mean they should all be condemned. There's been speculation that a faulty fridge caused the fire. Perhaps we should stop using fridges? Or ban the use of fridges in tower blocks? Or, get a sense of perspective and accept that there are risks in everything we do.

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 20/06/2017 19:10

Tower blocks are usually very safe. It was the cladding that is already banned in the uk, europe and usa, that is the problem. I agree that sprinkler systems should be standard and a few more regulations need to change but one horrific incident (in the uk) does not mean that thousands of tower blocks need to be demolished.

Out2pasture · 20/06/2017 19:10

in conjunction with some retrofitting, wouldn't it be easier to make current tower residents take a basic fire suppression/first aid course.
practicing evacuation on a quarterly basis. making participation in these exercises mandatory....
oh and while i'm on a roll making it illegal for a building to be overcapacity?
making sure that local fire department has the necessary equipment to assist rescue from upper levels...
I could go on and on but i'll stop now
maybe not before saying that smoking in buildings should be banned

LovelyBath77 · 20/06/2017 19:13

I agree that ones with cladding or unsafe should not have people living in until they are made safe. Not sure about immediate relocation being possible though.

Babymamamama · 20/06/2017 19:21

I agree they should be torn down. Totally. But if you think everyone currently in them will then get rehoused within the same postcode it's just not going to happen. It you laid out all the tower block properties into low rise it would probably fill a whole new city. It does frustrate me that there are various areas up north where terraced streets are going to waste yet in other parts of UK people are living cheek by jowl. It needs a wholesale rethink. The problem I think is that when people are homeless they are the responsibility of one borough and usually expect to remain there. Rather than joined up thinking which would enable housing stock to be sourced and used no matter where it is located.

Babymamamama · 20/06/2017 19:22

I also dont think any gas appliances should be allowed in high rise. At all.

MayhemAndRudderless · 20/06/2017 19:25

There is not enough land to build homes.

People need to procreate fewer offspring. 2-3 kids max.

UK foreign policy should be reformed.

WomanWithAltitude · 20/06/2017 19:28

How the fuck would you make it illegal for a building to be over capacity? Would you stop people having parties, or inviting visitors round?

Given that it wasn't overcrowding that caused a small fire to destroy the whole tower, or residents' lack of fire training, or smoking for that matter, you have arrived at ludicrous conclusions.

WomanWithAltitude · 20/06/2017 19:29

^ that was to Out2Pasture

I come from London and now live up north... What on earth are you talking about?

Also, gas appliances are safety checked and have to have certificates, electrical appliances are not and do not. Electrical appliances outnumber gas more than 3 -1. The Grenfell fire was started by an electrical appliance (which was subsequently put out but the cladding had caught by then) You can not ban every electrical appliance because of fire, nor should you, same goes with gas.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 20/06/2017 19:30

LOL

Yes let's make hundreds of thousands of people homeless, after all the UK does not have a housing crisis Hmm

NameChanger22 · 20/06/2017 19:33

I'm sure the Tories would love your idea. They'd clear London of poor people in no time. Makes you wonder?

What really needs to happen is huge taxes on second homes. That would sort the housing problem pretty quick.
