To be a bit confused about teacher gifts

Sunshinegirls · 19/06/2017 22:06

Who do you buy gifts for? My daughter has a main class teacher but has several other teachers and helpers (SEN) throughout the week, half of them I don't even know their name. Do I just buy a gift for her main teacher? Confused

I'd say so but then maybe some chocs or biscuits etc with a note that says for the others to share etc? Like what we did for our midwives when i had my baby recently we couldn't get all the names so just gifted as a group so to speak!

Hassled · 19/06/2017 22:08

You could just get a cake/cakes for the staffroom. Would that be easier?

MrsWire · 19/06/2017 22:14

Don't get a gift for any of them. They get paid to do their job.

glenthebattleostrich · 19/06/2017 22:16

I do a gift for teacher and 2 TAs then a box of nice teabags and cordials for the staff room about 2 weeks before the end of term.

BusyBeez99 · 19/06/2017 22:21

What MrsWire said. No one buys me gifts for doing my job.

tigercub50 · 19/06/2017 22:22

I used to buy gifts but can't really afford it at the mo. I would like to get something for DDs school counsellor though as she has been brilliant.

elQuintoConyo · 19/06/2017 22:34

Ww have done a whole-class gift for the teacher. There is no TA. DS does judo but i have no idea of the names of any of them (and they looked miserable as sin when they did the end of course demo last week with all the kids) so no present for them.

For rhe class gift each child has drawn a picture of the teacher, one of the dads is artsy and has bound them all for us. Looks great, cost nothing, very personal. She has been the class teacher for 2 years (age 4-5/5-6).

For his previous teacher I gave her a small plant that i wrote 'thanks for helping me grow' on the pot (i know she likes plants).

Gifts don't have to cost much or be given to everyone.

I volunteer for Guiding. I look after your kids for free, and contribute a bit their education in a small way.
No one buys me end of term presents Sad

RainbowsAndUnicorn · 19/06/2017 23:16

We buy for all those that play a part in their education so teacher and TA for us. Whilst the teacher is the most important to the class usually, the TA and any SEN support a child gets can play a big part in the learning. Also do gifts for admin and the head.

Yes they get paid but people tip hairdressers, takeaway drivers etc for doing their job so why not teachers who go above and beyond for our children rather than just deliver a pizza?

deffonamechange · 19/06/2017 23:16

I'm friends with loads of teachers. They moan about getting presents and give them all away.
They do really really like a card or note from child or parent

Want2bSupermum · 19/06/2017 23:19

I give cash. The teachers where I live make very little and work extremely hard. I also organize lunch for the staff in each of my kids classes. It's $100 for each class and I get other parents to chip in.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 20/06/2017 00:13

If your child gets 1:1 and has done well this year and likes the person supporting them, then a gift for them would be much appreciated. It doesn't have to be big. Class teachers get LOADS of presents, but support staff don''t, and even crap presents tend to mean a lot to them.

Sunshinegirls · 20/06/2017 08:56

I like the idea of a box of biscuits/chocs that they can share, if I could afford it I would love to buy them all a spa day! My daughter has done so well that I could hug them all and cry!

Some people have perks in their job, like private medical insurance, or subsided lunch, or discount cards or freebies of one sort or another.

If you want to buy your child's teacher something, then do so. Something small or something general, like staffroom coffee, tea, biscuits, is always appreciated, but the best thing is a personal letter or card to say thank you, especially if you copy in the Head teacher.

One of the nicest things I ever had was a handmade paperweight and another was a fridge magnet. Small things, but the thought behind them was much greater than the monetary value.

dingit · 20/06/2017 09:14

The gift thing stops at secondary fortunately. Although ds wanted to get his maths teacher a present. She is really lovely and gone that extra mile with his gcse class, including making them jerk chicken for their revision classes.

Longdistance · 20/06/2017 09:25

I'm just giving the teachers a £10 Amazon voucher. Probably chocs for the assistants.

wornoutboots · 20/06/2017 09:33

my (primary & nursery) kids tend to give to all the people involved in teaching them, usuallysomething they've had a hand in.

wornoutboots · 20/06/2017 09:36

sent too soon!

anyway, this year that's 6 each! I don't tend to give the teachers anything different from the TAs, the TAs are already undervalued for all they do.

PinkCrystal · 20/06/2017 09:42

I usually get token small gift for teacher. Sometimes for TA if there is only one. But if there are several I really cannot afford it. The cliquey take over parents try to make us all give 10 quid to give vouchers but find that distasteful so opt out.

brooklyn11 · 20/06/2017 09:47

I have bought the teachers and ta's a notebook from Funky pigeon with their names and a quote on and a nice pen. Teacher's always need notebooks so I would hope they'll be put to good use and they cost under £5 each with a discount code!

My daughter has a learning difficultly and I bought for her teacher and the ta she'd had the most input/help from rather than buying them all.HTH!

grannytomine · 20/06/2017 09:49

I don't think you have to buy gifts but I'm not a teacher/nurse or anything like that and I have been bought gifts, it isn't that unusual is it? If you maybe go the extra mile people sometimes want to say thank you.

Want2bSupermum · 20/06/2017 13:38

Def agree about gifts for the support staff.

fannydaggerz · 20/06/2017 14:02

I have bought my sons teacher a present.

There is a TA but I don't know her name so his main teacher will get the gift.

Allthebestnamesareused · 20/06/2017 14:02

The gift thing hasn't stopped at our secondary school although fewer people buy them.

Fwend · 20/06/2017 14:24

I'm a teacher in very deprived area. Seriously - don't spend money. Email the Head and tell them what a fab job we're doing instead!
