To refuse to iron anything unless it's for work

I work part time, I have an almost 1 year old, DH works 40+ hours a week and it's a struggle just to keep on top of the washing and other household tasks! So I don't iron. I iron my uniform, because I work in a professional setting (and yes I will iron DS's uniform when he's older if I cant get away with it) but am I really a bad person for not seeing the point of ironing ordinary day clothes? Like why is it even a thing anyway?

Mother in law tidies my living room when she's babysitting and DS is in bed, I really do appreciate it. But she makes a point of saying she's left me an ironing pile if I have clothes drying. And when she's gone I cackle and throw it all on hangers and straight in the wardrobe then enjoy my evening. Grin

Anyone else? Or am I going to have to learn better ways?

Nope you're fine. I iron my work uniform and and my nice t shirts if they're going to be on show. In the winter they've got a jumper over the top so no one will see them so I don't bother for half the year!

Cary2012 · 19/06/2017 17:41

I love ironing.
There, I've said it.

JaneEyre70 · 19/06/2017 17:45

I iron everything, even tea towels and towels Blush. I did 2 baskets this morning in front of the fan, and did wonder what the actual feck was wrong with me Grin. I'll just slink away quietly..........

Funnyfarmer · 19/06/2017 17:47

I've always ironed. It's a terrible habit. I am trying to quit.
It's really hard though. I hate it. Especially on days like today.
It is something you just get used too.
Even though clothes arn't exactly a crumpled mess. It just feels wrong if there not ironed. I can tell so I think everyone eles can.
I'm trying to wean myself slowly at the moment. Sometimes I'll pop the odd thing in the wardrobe. I'm hoping to build myself up gradually to it with everything

phoenixtherabbit · 19/06/2017 17:52

I only ever iron uniform and shirts. The odd top that creases badly. Don't bother with anyone else. A friend ironed all her tiny new born baby clothes before she had the baby. I was Hmm i bet she never did it once she had the baby

SheepyFun · 19/06/2017 17:54

When I was 15, DM said I was old enough to iron my school uniform. It was never ironed again (polycotton blouses, so they looked OK if hung up to dry). I do iron some blouses for work, but nothing else. My life is too short.

LorLorr2 · 19/06/2017 18:04

funnyfarmer as habits go that's certainly not a terrible one!!

Funnyfarmer · 19/06/2017 18:07

Suppose the moral of my story op.
Do you really want to end up like me?
I only started ironing when an old boyfriend of mine moved in on a part time basis. He liked his clothes ironed. I used to just do his. Before I knew it I was ironing bedding!
It's a slippery slope.
This was 14 years ago. We've been split up for 11 years and I'm still ironing every sodding day.
It takes at least half hour out of my day. And is I let it build up or we've been away it can take hours.
DON'T DO IT!

PuckeredAhole · 19/06/2017 18:08

I don't iron.

Funnyfarmer · 19/06/2017 18:09

@LorLorr2. I seriously hate it.
A good 2 hours I was at it today.
I couldn't face it yesterday it was way too hot. Dd went school this morning with an unironed t-shirt.
It was fairly creased nothing major though. When she came out of school it was fine

BWatchWatcher · 19/06/2017 18:10

Irons are only meant for hama beads.

luckylucky24 · 19/06/2017 18:10

We don't iron in this house unless necessary!

Grimbles · 19/06/2017 18:12

I don't iron unless I have to. I find that if you 'flatten' out stuff when you hang it up to dry that it's not that creased when it's dried.

One of my major bugbears is when dh hangs washing, he will just drape it over the rail and not reshape or unroll sleeves, etc. Angry

RelentlesslyPositive · 19/06/2017 18:13

I haven't ironed anything for 23 years.

alltouchedout · 19/06/2017 18:13

I don't iron unless I really have to.
I know people who iron their bedding. I worry about them a bit.

BabyHamster · 19/06/2017 18:15

It is definitely addictive. I iron much more than I used to.

Why should you iron your OH's clothes though? Doesn't seem fair to me, assuming you're looking after your DC when not at work? I can't iron when DD is awake as she is inclined to pull wires and I'm worried she'd pull the iron on top of her!

SaS2014 · 19/06/2017 18:48

I'm with you. Only things that get ironed in our house is my work uniform and DH work shirts. And yes once dd at school her uniform will be. Life is far too short to spend hours a week ironing every single thing.

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 19/06/2017 19:02

I rarely iron anything. I go out of my way to buy stuff that won't need ironing.

ModreB · 19/06/2017 19:31

I don't iron. I don't buy anything that needs to be ironed. Hang it up properly, and it will dry without creases. Or, flatten out with your natural body heat when you wear it. I was taught by my GM, who ironed everything but told me not to set a precedent when I married, as in her words, "Ironing is a bloody pain in the arse."

MIL was an agressive ironer. I was Hmm the first time I saw her ironing underwear and dishcloths. She was Angry when she first saw me not ironing DH's shirts for work. At the time, he was a professional dry cleaner, so a professional ironer. He was more than capable of ironing his own shirts.

I find life is too short to iron. DS1 is in the Army, so took ironing lessons from DH and me (I taught him my DGM methods)

Apparently, the Army thinks I'm a bit lax on the ironing front, but the way I taught DS is more than acceptable..

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 19/06/2017 19:44

I've done two lots of ironing today , I love seeing it all smooth and creaseless(if that's a word)

DarthMaiden · 19/06/2017 19:46

I hate ironing.

The only things I do iron are my linen napkins and pillow cases for the bed.

Everything is carefully folded when slightly damp and comes out ok.

DH irons his work shirts.

Louiselouie0890 · 19/06/2017 19:49

I don't iron anything. If I get ready on the day and it's badly creased I'll iron it.

Huldra · 19/06/2017 19:56

My husband irons his work shirts and my youngest sons school shirts. Also if he's going out and wants a t-shirt a bit smarter.
Eldest teen irons his school shirts, he has to wear normal office clothes.
I iron my stuff as and when needed, which isn't often. My work tops don't take long because I hang them up on the curtain rail whilst slightly damp.

Life is too short.

Littlecaf · 19/06/2017 20:01

DH irons his work shirts.

I iron about half a dozen dresses, trousers etc when needed for smart.

I might iron the guest bed sheets.

That's it.

My DM is horrified (but she's fab so just smiles at me when I say I don't iron)

NorksAkimbo72 · 19/06/2017 21:22

Another non-ironer here!! Tumble dry, hang up just before it's 100% dry, DH irons his own work stuff. I don't even own anything that needs ironing!
