AIBU to expect parents not to drink at sports day?!?!

Have just returned from a very hot primary school sports day. A group of parents decided to crack open a few cold cans of pimms at about 11am. AIBU to think that this is totally out of order at a primary school sports day? I mean I know it's not cans of super brew but still I would never dream of watching my little ones in the sack race while getting sloshed in the sun! Would love to hear other opinions on this.

YANBU

I would have LOVED a bloody drink at sports day last week but it's 2 hours in the middle of the day where you then take your kids home and for about 75% that involves a car journey.

Lovingit81 · 20/06/2017 21:29

YANBU totally inappropriate at that time of day and at that type of event. There's always the minority piss heads who could ruin everything. Why does alcohol have to be at every event. Drinking should not be normal or regular it should be a treat just like every other toxin out there. Kids sports day is not the time to indulge in a 'treat' that kids can't have.

Voice0fReason · 20/06/2017 21:38

I hate the british attitude to alcohol. some people can't do anything without a drink in their hand. yuck.
What are you even talking about? What is this "British attitude" that means people can't do anything without a drink in their hand? It's not something I recognise at all. I have managed to type this entire post without a glass of alcohol but a Pimms on a hot sports day sounds divine.

PunkrockerGirl · 20/06/2017 21:42

Not to mention those who think that one pleasant glass of pimms in the sunshine will automatically result in an unseemly brawl for which your children will never forgive you.

embod · 20/06/2017 21:46

No school I've ever taught in has allowed alcohol on the premises. I'm really surprised it's a thing.

And a sure fire way of making your children crave the forbidden fruit.

There's lots of things I do as an adult that my daughter can't as a child. She understands that totally. Notwithstanding the fact that I don't believe any food/drink should be a "treat" - it fosters a dangerous relationship with food IMO

Queenylaverne · 20/06/2017 21:50

I didnt realise having kids involved such merriment...I might have one now I know............Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 20/06/2017 22:09

I don't understand why people are saying it's a Brit thing when clearly it happens in other countries too. Or is that only in expat schools?

Wishforsnow · 20/06/2017 22:14

I've never been to a sports day without a Pimms tent. Come to think of it as a child the school supplied drinks for parents. I recall beer and wine. Could have been Pimms there but I didn't know what all the grown up drinks were

mumindoghouse · 20/06/2017 22:34

We had parents bring a few cold cans. The event was off school property, had pta bar be cue at lunchtime, and was a very convivial picnic atmosphere. Some had some alcohol, not me as was driving. But it was sensible moderate consumption on a lovely day. No one sloshed. Just a lovely part of the year end activities.

You're talking like they're serving Absinthe!

Kids should learn that there are adult things they're allowed when they're adults, but there's nothing to be ashamed of and it's OK in moderation. Treating them like poison just makes kids want to try them more.

CheshireChat · 20/06/2017 22:57

But this day should revolve around kids, not adult activities.

cherish123 · 20/06/2017 23:00

YANBU. This is bad behaviour. The Headteacher should not have allowed this - setting bad example. I once saw a father drinking beer at my 8 year old son's rugby match.

GoneDownhill · 20/06/2017 23:01

Drinking is ok but getting drunk wouldn't be.

Cans of pimms sound like an excellent idea

paxillin · 20/06/2017 23:09

I know this has been asked several times, but it hasn't really been answered. Why on earth does anybody worry about just what is in some other adult's drinking vessel whatever the occasion? Except to push one's own moral code on others? Nobody suggests getting sloshed and disrupting others. Major case of MYOB. All this "do you have to" is irrelevant.

BabychamSocialist · 20/06/2017 23:14

CheshireCat

Maybe you want to watch hundreds of screaming kids for three hours until your own child is actually involved without the help of alcohol, but I imagine it takes the edge off for a lot of people!

BabychamSocialist · 20/06/2017 23:15

(Not me of course - as a teacher I have to remain sober!)

spiney · 20/06/2017 23:27

Lol at this thread

Doing vodka shots at assembly .....

" I have often wished for a well stocked bar at soft play....

Laughed out load.

waitforitfdear · 20/06/2017 23:32

I bloody love mumsnet it has made me howl with laughter (and cry) for the last 10 years plus but the alcohol threads make me laugh the most.

Bloody hilarious pearl clutching parallel universe. Bloody. Brilliant op well done

waitforitfdear · 20/06/2017 23:34

the head teacher should not allowed this

Grin it gets better

paxillin · 20/06/2017 23:40

If the end-of-year recorder concert would feature any sort of alcoholic relief they would make a killing.

TequilaSunshine · 20/06/2017 23:50

I've never been to a sports day without a Pimms tent.

I've never been to one *with".I now want one Grin

Booboo66 · 21/06/2017 00:01

All our school events involve alcohol apart from sports day, although I'm sure if it was a bit later it would do too. Ours starts at 9 and is done by 11. i dont think anyone would turn a hair at a tin of pimms if it were a bit later in the day!

cheval · 21/06/2017 00:01

Is this a private school thing? Wish they had offered alcohol at the ridiculous excuse for a sports day mine endured. They were crap.

pottered · 21/06/2017 04:49

Yes, my school should offer an insulating cocktail to anyone before the brass instrument group plays at the Christmas and end of term shows!
