To hate chavvy?

It's such a horrible word. It gets thrown around on here like it's nothing. It's classist, sneery, offensive, I could go on!

Also if something IS chavvy, let's say a name, what exactly does it being chavvy mean? What makes a chav...a chav?

a young lower-class person typified by brash and loutish behaviour

^^^ definition for you

alsmutko · 18/06/2017 14:40

Snobbish. I've a friend who often says 'Essex-y' which means the same thing I think. I cringe whenever she says it.

Mrsknackered · 18/06/2017 14:41

I understand the definition, but if that's what it means, how can a pram or a name be chavvy?

I am a non British person living in the UK and I never use words like that.
It is putting people in boxes, no better that other awful terms used to refer to people of different ethnicities or religion.
In my humble opinion

Mrsknackered · 18/06/2017 14:42

@alsmutko a woman I used to know would refer to plenty of people as council estate-y.

Ugh.

Knackered - Yeah I know! As it happens we're council estate (albeit now housing associations) so I can relate to how that feels.

VeryButchyRestingFace · 18/06/2017 14:45

I don't like *chavvy but I do like chavalanche.

shoot me

We use 'ned' in my part of the world anyway. Or 'Senga' if you're feeling adventurous.

PortiaCastis · 18/06/2017 14:45

I believe Chav is a Romany word for a term of endearment towards a child and is frequently misused

Highalert · 18/06/2017 14:47

It seems acceptable on MN these days. Which says a lot for how MN is now.

BusterGonad · 18/06/2017 14:47

I believe you're right Portia

nina2b · 18/06/2017 14:47

I think it's become shorthand for lacking in taste, particularly when it comes to dress, make up and riotous behaviour. It's just a word which actually does do its job.

Highalert · 18/06/2017 14:48

It means WC on MN.

I love it because it perfectly describes in one word what would otherwise take many.

Highalert · 18/06/2017 14:49

Me too, Navy. It's like holding back the tide though.

CiliatedEpithelium · 18/06/2017 14:51

I am fairly sure it originated as an Indian word and brought here by Romany Gypsies.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 18/06/2017 14:51

Much as I dislike "chavvy" on the baby name board... I still like it better than the dancing around about "people like us"..... "Families that value education"...."people with the same values" on the education board.

Fucks sake; If you hate working class people just say so Angry

hamble123 · 18/06/2017 14:51

PortiaCastis: 'CHAV' is a short handed term for 'Council House And Violent'..
.
I understand that in the past the acronym may have been used by the authorities (police? Social services?) to identify their staff that some people they would have to come in contact with may have aggressive behaviour.

@RortyCrankle @nina2b are you both happy to use other words that are derogatory?
I genuinely want to know.

OP posts:
unlimiteddilutingjuice · 18/06/2017 14:53

I've also seen people pulled up for the word "chav" but allowed to express the same classiest view in more words, unchallenged.

MissEliza · 18/06/2017 14:53

I've been told by friends in the police that chav was first used by police to refer to a particular type of person and it stood for 'council house and violent.' Once I heard that I promised never to use it again. It's so derogatory and classist. I can't say I've always kept my promise but I try!

bigbuttons · 18/06/2017 14:53

To me chavvy is most of the British people on Turkish beach holidays- horrible.
