No it isnt easier, no it's not less work and no DH you don't actually do anything like all of it!
Fuck me, it's 160 degrees out there, my rage is hotter than the damn BBQ which wasn't lit in time of course and naturally I have started things in the oven because when the BBQ does get going it will incinerate the outside of everything and leave a lovely warm core of pure food poisoning within...
AIBU surely we could get them banned, smoke, emissions or something??

We love a BBQ in our family. We have a lot of birthdays in the summer so we tend to host or attend a lot of BBQ's. I like the change in flavour that a BBQ gives compared to oven cooked. Considering I do all the cooking when DH hosts a BBQ, it's a nice little break for me. Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/06/2017 16:50

What makes them loads of work?

Catsize · 18/06/2017 16:51

It's the one thing that makes me want to relinquish my 25yr vegetarianism. Love a BBQ. Even a vegetarian one.

cantthinkofausernamerightnow · 18/06/2017 17:03

What makes them loads of work?

The banquetty- buffet nature of them meaning that there's lots of prep and cutlery and crockery to set up and clear away, and the business of assisting the BBQer

AdoraBell · 18/06/2017 17:08

I love a barbecue. I find communication is the key element. And 🍷 of course 😁

HotelEuphoria · 18/06/2017 17:09

I BBQ all year round in Yorkshire. I don't mean I invite people and stand freezing outside, I just mean I cook meat and fish on it outdoors or smoke things in the smoker because they taste so good and it's far easier to cook greasy food outside than clean my cooker later.

BUT, today it's too friggin hot and I CBA moving at all. So it's Chinese for us.

kittytom · 18/06/2017 17:16

I would normally agree! However I suggested a BBQ today because I couldn't think of anything else to do on a hot day. I am very unimaginative - burgers, sausages (despite barely ever eating meat otherwise), baps, BBQ sauce, salad, wine... Kids enjoyed it (DS said "I am having a yuvly day" and we used a disposable BBQ so no washing it.

Giddyaunt18 · 18/06/2017 17:18

Every time I have to remind DH to wait until the coals are all grey and there are no flames. I'm sure he doesn't believe me. Then about an hour after we've eaten he says, "Those coals are still red hot!" and I give him 'the look' sigh.

Brittbugs80 · 18/06/2017 17:18

We're in the UK and use our BBQ all year round to cook our meat on. Absolutely love it. Ours is a gas one, everything cooks perfectly and we don't wash the racks everyone. It's no more effort than using the oven.

If your food is burnt outside and raw inside, it's being cooked wrong. We even have a flat tray for onions, mushrooms and fried eggs etc and a pot that we use BBQ smoking chips in to give the food a lovely flavour.

Learn how to BBQ right and just like rhubarb and rose gin, it will change your life!

Giddyaunt18 · 18/06/2017 17:21

Had a lovely one last night but waited until 8pm as it was too damn hot! the best thing on a BBQ is fish. Got some sea bass in one of those fish shaped BBQ contraptions, stuffed it with dill and lemon, delicious. Just had it with marinated pork fillet, flat breads, salad and a small amount of faff making tzatziki and salad. Faff getting to me was greatly minimised by cold beers.

OuchLegoHurts · 18/06/2017 17:26

I love barbeques! We're sitting outside right now, after a fabulous bbq and wine, watching the kids run around with the garden hose, happily full of yummy food. I bbq all the time, and have never had food p poisoning!

Titsywoo · 18/06/2017 17:27

I like our BBQ but it's a smoker/bbq/pizza oven which has a chimney so the smoke goes up away from my face and it's up on a stand so it's a bit like an outdoor oven but you get the smoky bbq taste.

Titsywoo · 18/06/2017 17:28

Oh and I cook my chicken for 30 mins in the oven then put it in the bbq just to be safe

waitforitfdear · 18/06/2017 17:29

Hate them just boring charred meat. Yeuk!

We have a salad with fish pie in the garden with wine and prosecco.

No smoke no hot food and no fuss just relaxed dining Wink

plominoagain · 18/06/2017 17:30

We love a BBQ here too - but to save all the faffing about with cleaning the thing , we usually buy a load of the large size throwaway ones at the end of each summer when they're reduced to about £3 each , and then use them the following summer . No cleaning or arguing about where we're going to store the bloody thing in the winter , no rust , marvellous.

Err I'm a woman and I love BBQs. YABU.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/06/2017 17:44

I have a big tray on which goes cutlery, glasses, serviettes etc. Then take out side to the garden table.

Are you all scrubbing it after every use? You burn off bits before and after cooking then give it a good going over with a BBQ brush. I only wash it up about every 2 or 3 uses , in fact in the instructions it says don't wash at all but I can't quite bring myself to do that ( BBQ all year and never had food poisoning)

I even if you do wash it every time it's only like when you clear up after cooking normally, isn't it?Confused

Manijo · 18/06/2017 17:54

We have them all the time and will even in cooler weather with the gas heater on. In fact just about to get the sausages out Grin

OuchLegoHurts · 18/06/2017 17:55

You don't clean a bbq! Just heat up and then brush off the residue from last cook, open a beer and chill out!

OuchLegoHurts · 18/06/2017 17:57

English people can be very uptight! Grin

Sorry for the double insult Wink

What cutlery and crockery to set up and clear away?
Surely you use these anyway for meals? It's very simple. Take some plates and cutlery from kitchen. Put on table in garden. Person cooking has something to put food on, when cooked - chicken ready. People take plate and help themselves.
More people than just your household the disposable.

Food wise what prep? I prep more for a roast than a BBQ.
BBQ salad which we eats lots of in the warmer months anyway. Doesn't take long to chuck in a bowl.
Then chicken which goes on with a few sausages and burgers. Chicken cooks whilst people eat sausages and burgers. Chuck on some corn on the cob. Optional steak, chops fish etc.
have food slowly cooking over the afternoon and into the evening so you have lunch and dinner.

When finished you have no trays and pans to wash. Cutlery and plates as you normally would same with glasses and plastic cups.

BBQ you scrap off the food when still hot soak in hot water whilst the BBQ is being put out. Takes minutes to wash and use that water to clean out the charcoal bit.

You don't have to stand over the BBQ all day. You can sit and chill and socialize with whoever is in the garden. Probably more social than in the kitchen as generally the person that cooks is alone.

No need to chuck anything in the oven. As pointed out if it's raw inside you are doing it wrong.

No food poisoning because your food is cooked. Someone mentioned using tools same for raw and cooked - if you cook a steak in the kitchen you use the same tongs to turn the meat when you first start cooking to when you place on the plate. So what's the difference?
Most people have a bowl of soapy water near the BBQ to give the utensils a kick dip when needed that gets changed often.
If your getting food poisoning your doing it wrong.

Someone asked how do you keep everything fresh in this weather. How do you keep it fresh in the kitchen? It's the same. YOu don't take everything out until required.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/06/2017 18:06

Yes,I agree with all that ^Grin
