No it isnt easier, no it's not less work and no DH you don't actually do anything like all of it!
Fuck me, it's 160 degrees out there, my rage is hotter than the damn BBQ which wasn't lit in time of course and naturally I have started things in the oven because when the BBQ does get going it will incinerate the outside of everything and leave a lovely warm core of pure food poisoning within...
AIBU surely we could get them banned, smoke, emissions or something??

I love a BBQ but only because my DH and DB are both v good BBQ-ers. They both use gas bbqs with lava rocks (or somesuch) which means no firelighters/burnt food/raw-on-inside food/billowing smoke, and no need to light the bloody bbq 40 days before you want to start cooking.

Both DH and DB clean the barbies too so DSIL and I just do spuds and loads of salads. 👍👍👍

I love a BBQ! It's 40plus here and we had one on Friday, 9 adults and 7 kids and it was great!

I made all the salads in advance so they just had to be brought out, DH did the meat and we had leg of lamb, some pork tenderloins and a few whole marinated chickens - all easy to cook as you can just put them on and leave them for ages.

Swan off to Tesco on the hottest day of the year! That's no treat!

At least Tesco has air conditioning. Angry

I love a BBQ, it's usually me that suggests it and I sort most of it. I regularly do a BBQ for the kids tea after school! I buy those bags of charcoal that you just light the corner, we do burgers and sausages, some salad and it's wonderful! BBQing is definitely not a "man thing" in my house...

Big covered gas BBQs are the only way.

I also find cleaning the BBQ afterwards easier than washing up after dinner. No cleaning it beforehand. Well I give the rack a quick rinse under the shower/hose but that's it.
No added expense. We eat what we'd eat if cooked in the kitchen just without adding extra heat to the house.
No food poisoning. Why would there be. You check you have cooked meat in the kitchen why not the same?
No additional washing up. In fact less - no pans, baking trays. Just BBQ tools, cutlery, knifes, boards, plates and glasses. All goes
In the dishwasher same with the grill (when it's still hot you scrap off any food which you do anyway whilst cooking). If more
People then it's disposable cutlery plates and cups.

YANBU.

Every summer I thank God I married a man who detests them as much as I do.

I actually don't even enjoy attending other people's. I hate flies and keep glancing at the coleslaw nervously in case one hovers over it. I worry about raw meat and get anxious if nobody used the oven first. And I always seem to end up on the chair where I'm squinting into the sun. There's never enough room in the garden table for plates, cutlery, a dozen condiments and several big salad bowls so there's a lot of "budging up" where nobody is comfortable. The kids get overheated and whiny but won't go inside cos everyone is outside. My arse gets sore on their garden furniture and I silently wish I was inside on my hosts comfy looking armchair.

NOPE!

I love BBQs. In fact I got a cobb bbq for my birthday 2 years ago and this year I got a pizza oven. I tend to use it more then dp. We bbq a lot and have even had the cobb out in december and it goes down very well during power cuts.
We try to be thoughtful with our bbqs/pizza ovens and have recently swapped our fire pit for a gas fire to limit the amount of smoke we cause. We also try to limit our pizza oven/bbq use to colder and wetter weather so we don't annoy the neighbours too much. I know it can get annoying with smoke everywhere so we do try to be very mindful of not disturbing other peoples use of their gardens.

YANBU. I'd rather cook a meal or make a buffet and eat it on the patio. So much fannying and male ego involved in BBQ's

A BBQ is a wonderful thing. BBQ food is lovely, especially if you have a jacket potato and salad with it.

My issue is this : DH suggests the BBQ, buts it's me that does the prep. Not too much of an issue there, as pp have said it's a few tatties in the oven and a salad or twos But DH is incapable of a family BBQ i.e. just us and the kids. So before you can say 'shall we have a BBQ' I'm catering for our family, the neighbours, Geoff from round the corner, half the rugby club and any other waifs and strays DH might meet on the way to the supermarket!! So then even simple potatoes and salad becomes a massive effort, and the washing up and tidying after a house full of people have increased fourfold.

Ooh. Gives me the rage.

And how on earth do you keep salads etc fresh in this heat??

Report
sodablackcurrant · 18/06/2017 14:07

No I don't like them personally.

Too hot, too little room to eat properly if its a crowd, and worst of all I do not like bbq taste at allso I just eat the salad, spuds and the buns!

Everyone has their own preferences though. As TIPTOE above said, I much prefer prep, cooking indoors and eating it outdoors. Nothing nicer on a warm sunny day, under the brolly, chilled wine and beer in the cooler at your feet. Bliss.

I feel very grateful that DH dislikes them as much as me. It's so much faff, carrying everything out into the gardenHmm we'd much rather cook in the kitchen.

Its the schlepping of everything from the kitchen to the garden that I hate.

We have a kitchen and a dining room so why are we taking trays of stuff into the garden?! At some point someones lunch will hit the deck because of a wasp, the youngest will throw a hissy fit because a tiny speck of something looks vaguely like a spider. The food takes twice as long to cook than if it was grilled or ovened. Then you have to clear up after chasing bun wrappings across the garden and some how there is more washing up than cooking inside.

I am happy to attend someone elses BBQ and I will cheerfully take a salad or something (in a disposable container, I am a good guest) and loads of beer. But holding my own? Nope.

Cannot. Be. Arsed.

I now live in Australia and have a gas BBQ. I do almost all my cooking on it. It is much easier and I like that my kitchen doesn't stink!

I cook on the hob...inside...like I would boil eggs there or soup. But meat and veg...OUTSIDE!

I love a BBQ, we had one last night, I made cous cous and veg skewers and DH cooked lamb steaks. Yummy and no pans to wash up!

BBQ again tonight, salad and chicken skewers and sausages for the sprog.

Again, no pans to watch and all I have to do is chuck salad and condiments outside.

I Iove a BBQ!

Nancy Me too! But a gas BBQ is a bit different and not everyone has them I suppose...they're much easier.

I do a whole roast dinner on ours!
