AIBU to go topless at the local outdoor swimming pool?

It's a glorious day & I'm at the local outdoor pool. It was a right hassle getting here (3 children under 5, queue to get in etc.) but now I'm here it's amazing! HOWEVER realised I've forgotten my bikini top!!! Not wearing a bra so can't use that instead. Going back for a bikini top isn't an option (it's a long round trip, would have to pay/queue again yadayadayada). This has made me think - Could I go topless? Im desperate for a swim and don't care about other people seeing my breasts. I'm not English and where I'm from going topless is more common. But here none of the women are topless.

Is it against the law? Would I be told off?

Would you go topless and if not why not?

Yes UK are weird about bodies. The fact that a woman has to ask is it okay to go topless at a swimming pool is bad enough. Its just a body, not an icky thing you have to hide

what is the difference between female breasts and male breast, except for the fact that(not always) female breasts are bigger?

Breasts are a secondary sexual characteristic (sexual in the biological sense of the word I mean). That's not to say they need to be covered at all times, but it helps to explain why women's chests are seen differently than children's or men's. I suppose larger muscles are also a secondary sexual characteristic though, which might make exposing men's pecs verboten and kind of blows my theory out of the water Grin

DistortedPerceptions · 18/06/2017 14:56

I'd probably do it if I had small boobs. Used to go topless swimming on holiday all the time when I was younger, it's a lovely feeling.

YeahILoveSummer · 18/06/2017 14:56

"But here none of the women are topless"

I think you have answered your own question Smile

RebelRogue · 18/06/2017 14:56

And yet little girls are being pressured to wear shorts underneath summer dresses just in case their pants might briefly be seen.

And this shows how fucked up it all is. Because it doesn't stop at breasts or age. It's knickers, legs, breasts, even shoulders (in USA),at all ages. We must protect female modesty!

RebelRogue · 18/06/2017 15:00

@ComputerUserNotTrained glad you mentioned children. Funnily enough even at an age where breasts are not developed ,most people that would happily let their boys topless at the pool/beach,will cover girls INEXISTENT breasts.

elevenclips · 18/06/2017 15:12

Wear your tshirt or your husbands tshirt in a pool.

Your argument that "they are just breasts" - would you go around Tesco topless or walk down the street topless as "they are just breasts"?

nocoolnamesleft · 18/06/2017 15:15

I don't care if you sunburn your nipples. But predicted very high UV levels, hottest part of the day, unlikely to be much shade, sunblock can only do so much...and 3 preschool kids. I hope they don't get burned.

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 18/06/2017 15:20

Just tell them you're non-binary and identifying as a man today and they can't say anything.

Genius!

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 18/06/2017 15:22

Thanks Pacific. They won't want to be in the paper for being anti trans will they?!Grin

Highalert · 18/06/2017 15:24

Is twins a banned word on MN?

Anatidae · 18/06/2017 15:25

Be careful not to swim past a toddler like mine, or you'll get a vicious latch on which may cramp your swimming style.

Btw Scandinavians (at least where I am) don't do topless.

Hothothotsummer · 18/06/2017 15:40

Why don't you ask your husband what he thinks?

longestlurkerever · 18/06/2017 15:58

Why is everyone being so horrible to the OP? What are you doing today that's so amazing you have to combine it with mumsnetting to slag off a day at the outdoor pool? We went to ours this morning too and yes it was busy but it was better than sitting in a sticky house playing monopoly like we are doing this afternoon.

babybell89 · 18/06/2017 16:14

I don't see a problem with it if you don't mind people staring. Only because it isn't often done here.
I think we should be able to go topless if we want, it so hot!

However I think you will be asked to cover up and I wouldn't dare even if I had good boobs! X

babybell89 · 18/06/2017 16:21

P.s first day on this site and people are mean!!

longestlurkerever · 18/06/2017 16:23

I think it's the heat making everyone grumpy baby bell!

WomblingThree · 18/06/2017 16:45

Exactly JacquesHammer! Call me naive, but I honestly don't get the bitchy snarking on this thread. Is there some secret undercurrent that I'm not aware of?

Two people and three children having a day out at an outdoor pool on a warm day? Hold the front page!!! Isn't that a normal thing to do? We must be seriously abnormal then.

As for the exposed boobs angle, there's a large amount of hyperbolic shite being spouted. If it's against pool rules, fine put them away. Otherwise I think it's an interesting discussion why it's fine on the beach and why it's fine for men anywhere. The comparison to having your cock and balls out is stupid. No woman is suggesting getting her muff out.

I don't particularly want to see moobs in the supermarket, but apparently that's fine, yet a woman can't get her tits out at a pool. How is this not a double standard. I don't ever want to get mine out thanks, but surely the choice should be available to both sexes.

Joffmognum · 18/06/2017 16:48

It's not illegal, that's ridiculous. Female children are allowed to be topless - how old does a woman have to be to be against the law? Public decency laws mean you can't expose your genitals in a public place, anything else is subjective.

It's up to the swimming pool. It's a private place, they can have whatever dress code they like. My local doesn't allow topless women

Floralnomad · 18/06/2017 17:31

I don't particularly want to see moobs in the supermarket you won't men have to wear tops to go in supermarkets , or at least they do where I live .

Ilovebaconbutimonadiet · 18/06/2017 17:32

@IHateUncleJamie your nickname is great too! :-) Yes, you are right. But unless stated so, she's an adult and she can do whatever she wants, why is it that abroad is just fine & in the UK seems like a crime?
