Mums offended by my dog?

I have a friendly, cuddly dog, he's a cross breed but one that most kids want to happily stroke (most adults too). Since he is a rescue he is always on a leash to prevent running off when not in a dog park area (so people approach him to meet him).

He has quite a common name that is being used for boys these days but is also a very common 'dog' name. Alfie.

The other day I was walking him and a mum and son came over, all ''aww he's so cute! can I stroke him?'' It was all good, then the kid asked me his name and I said ''Alfie'' and the mum got this sour look on her face and huffed, ''That's my son's name'' and ushered her son away in a mood.

Now its happened before that kids have had the same name as him and the parents laugh or the kids are quite happy but I was so Confused at this woman's reaction. Would you be annoyed if someone had a pet with the same name as your kid??

edited to amend: first cat was BASIL! dohhhhhh

clarkl2 · 18/06/2017 17:52

I have a 12 year old Alfie and his aunt's cat has the same name, not remotely arsed.

AnnabelC · 18/06/2017 17:53

Why are people getting so offended at everything. It stifles what you feel you can say. Yes be sensitive to other people's feelings and not rude but it can be anything these days.

Billben · 18/06/2017 17:53

We have a LOT of animals (cats, dogs, poultry, waterfowl, etc) and they all have human names.

LadyinCement · 18/06/2017 17:57

Out and about we met a little boy with the same name as dog. The boy's parents insisted on taking a picture of Stanley and Stanley. Cute!

A guy I knew when I was younger named his own child after the dog he had in childhood. My mum said, 'his wife had a baby, it's called xxxx'. I said, no, mum, that was his dog, I wanted his Child's name. Turned out he used the same name.
Awesome name it was too. I'd have used it but dh didn't like it.

Same here. I was too tired to argue after 12hrs of labour !

Surely like most our family pets are named by DCs in the family. So they choose everything from Pongo, to Fred.

originalbiglymavis · 18/06/2017 18:06

Our neighbour when we were kids had 2 dogs. One had my sister's first name and the other her second. So when they yelled the dogs in for dinner we would be in hysterics "Doris, McDuff, din dins! Come and get it!"

Vickyg43 · 18/06/2017 18:11

I knew a racing greyhound called Nigel a long time ago and a miniature schnauzer called Dave. I even dated a guy with the same name as my dog! He didn't get offended!! I've known dogs called Monty, Allie, Sally, Lucy, Jack, Buddy, Sarah, Ralf, Bert, even Barry etc etc!!! We have to call them something and we can't all call our dogs Timmy or Shep.

mummyof3kids · 18/06/2017 18:16

Strange reaction from the woman! My dog has same name as my eldest daughters boyfriends dad. We all laugh about it. My daughter did get strange looks from her boyfriends mum when they first met and my daughter said 'xxx has been licking my face'. It sounds like this woman you met was very uptight!

Onlygingergothinthevillage · 18/06/2017 18:20

Our pets have always had 'human' names
Hamish
Keith
Albert
Thomas
George
Garry (guinea pig)
Claude
Fred
Alice etc
Our cat has the same name as my friends daughter, even goldfish have had proper names, the kids insisted.
People like to think the names they choose for their children are somehow special but if you choose a popular name your son could easily end up with the same name as the neighbour's chihuahua...

Ruthie2k · 18/06/2017 18:23

I have a son called Monty and when asked his name sooooooo many people say 'oh, my dog is called Monty', I smile and say what a good choice of name.
My cats are called Barney and Bella but I wouldn't say that if I met children with the same name.
The mother is being pathetic and was rude, ignore it.

Dollymouse · 18/06/2017 18:32

My cat is called Tony - it really suits him - he was a rescue kitten when we got him

missdebaroo · 18/06/2017 18:40

My dog has a human name and whenever I've met people who have the same name as her think is funny and lovely!
She sounds uptight!
Same as when parents choose a run of the mill name for their child then get pissy that there's 3 of the same name child in their child's class.

buttercup54321 · 18/06/2017 18:43

Silly cow!!!!

MaliceKitten · 18/06/2017 18:44

It wouldn't bother me at all. Saying that one of my friends in school had a dog with my name Heidi. I was quite tickled by this.

CoolCarrie · 18/06/2017 18:47

Both our dogs have 'human ' names, and no one has ever been offended. Our cats have all had human names as well.

TheFirstMrsDV · 18/06/2017 18:49

One of my dogs is called Atticus.
This wasn't a problem when I got him but my area has undergone rapid gentrification.
This thread is making me a bit nervous Grin

DumbledoresApprentice · 18/06/2017 18:53

My cat is called Cerys Matthews. I hope that Welsh singers aren't easily offended. Grin She was being ridiculous to get offended. I like human names for pets.

Raahh · 18/06/2017 18:56

Over 30 years ago, we had a tortoise called Stanley, ahead of the 'old man names' curve, there. I've had a fish called Desmond (after Des Lynam) a house rabbit called Brian, and our dog is called Ike.

Bella seems to be the popular name for girls and dogs around here. And yy, Alfie. Or Toby.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/06/2017 19:15

Human names as pet names are brilliant. Friend has a dog called Vyvian. Another has two cats, Pete and Dave, named a while ago before it was fashionable. When moving in to new house, friend asked her DH 'Where are Pete and Dave?', 'Snuggled up on the bed in our room' replied he. Much Confused from removal men.

Sianlis · 18/06/2017 19:23

My brother had a dog with the same name as me, he said the dog was already called that when he got her....I'm not so sure Hmm

TwoDogs9 · 18/06/2017 19:25

My name is a popular name for golden retrievers Grin can't say I've ever been offended by this fact! What a strange woman!!

angieb57 · 18/06/2017 19:27
