Mums offended by my dog?

SpareChangeDownTheSofa · 16/06/2017 12:10

I have a friendly, cuddly dog, he's a cross breed but one that most kids want to happily stroke (most adults too). Since he is a rescue he is always on a leash to prevent running off when not in a dog park area (so people approach him to meet him).

He has quite a common name that is being used for boys these days but is also a very common 'dog' name. Alfie.

The other day I was walking him and a mum and son came over, all ''aww he's so cute! can I stroke him?'' It was all good, then the kid asked me his name and I said ''Alfie'' and the mum got this sour look on her face and huffed, ''That's my son's name'' and ushered her son away in a mood.

Now its happened before that kids have had the same name as him and the parents laugh or the kids are quite happy but I was so Confused at this woman's reaction. Would you be annoyed if someone had a pet with the same name as your kid??

She'd have a hard time round here where almost every dog you meet is called Alfie - including ours!

I really wish we'd gone for something else, like Rover or Fido.

I have owned a dog called Linda and a cat named George.

MetalMidget · 16/06/2017 12:44

I know a couple of local dogs called Dennis (border collie, prone to chasing lawnmowers) and Colin (border Terrier, rascal).

A few years back my mom got into a huff because her name became a popular dog name. She'd hear her name, turn around, and see a Labrador lolloping past.

I once met a dog called Ross From Friends. Not just Ross; Ross From Friends. "Here, Ross From Friends. Leave it, Ross From Friends". it was hilarious.

HazelBite · 16/06/2017 12:47

Two of my nephews children have the same name of the cats I used to have, and he played with as a child.
My friend and I find it very funny that both our sons (who are exactly the same age) both have a "Poppy" in their lives, one is a dog, the other a daughter, both are equally gorgeous Grin

Dahlietta · 16/06/2017 12:48

My dog is named after my Dad! He thought it was funny Grin

SpareChangeDownTheSofa · 16/06/2017 12:49

I just sort of stared at her because I couldn't believe her reaction!

SuperBeagle, Alfie does turn into 'Alfred' when he's in trouble. I think Alfie is one of those names some people think is really unique and get upset by when anyone has that name, so a dog having it was just an extra insult to her (no offense to anyone with kids called Alfie) Grin

Most kids who have the same name as him love it! Its like a special thing for them.

RoseVase, I don't know how but I want to guess Rex? Grin

A guy I knew when I was younger named his own child after the dog he had in childhood. My mum said, 'his wife had a baby, it's called xxxx'. I said, no, mum, that was his dog, I wanted his Child's name. Turned out he used the same name.
Awesome name it was too. I'd have used it but dh didn't like it.

CitronellaEllaElla · 16/06/2017 12:50

My dd has one of those little sucker upper type fish in her tank, it is called Taylor Swift Grin

CiliatedEpithelium · 16/06/2017 12:58

I suppose you could always say his name is Cabbage Frillygizzard but why should you lie? There are random nutjobs in all strata of society OP. My dog is a common boys name.

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/06/2017 13:00

My mum named me after one of the dogs she grew up with....

I'm only glad she called me after the Great Dane. If she'd named me after the GSD, I'd be labouring under 'Tinkerbell' now...

gabsdot · 16/06/2017 13:02

My friend used to have a dog called Ross. They'd had it a few years when one of their neighbours called their new baby Ross too. Her kids thought it was hilarious

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 16/06/2017 13:03

My DD has the same nickname as the dog my great grandmother had (eg say DD is called Elizabeth but we call her Beth and the dog was called Beth) I knew this as well, it kinda cheesed my DM off as she wanted my DD to be named after her 😁

I'll digress a little, my GG loved her dog so much that when it died she went to see a Medium to try to contact it's spirit - it makes me chuckle wondering if the Medium had to sit there barking some message from beyond the grave 😂

girlandboy · 16/06/2017 13:04

She was being utterly ridiculous!
My dh has an uncommon name and he has never met anyone in real life with that name. He once heard someone shout his name in a park and a Labrador bounced past. Dh was chuffed that there was a least someone with the same name, even if it was a dog! Grin

GoneDownhill · 16/06/2017 13:04

OP, are you sure she was miffed? Maybe it was something else 🤷🏻‍♀️ Perhaps she had just remembered her parking ticket was running out or something.

BTW, I love the threads on kids names Vs dogs names as two of my DC are actually named after pets. One after a much loved dog 🐶 and one after a lovely cat. 🐱 They are normal names though.

RiversrunWoodville · 16/06/2017 13:04

Realising we have/had quite a few human named pets over the years especially our GSDs currently we have Cassie have had Tara, Jason and oddly my mum had Shiela despite hating an aunt of that nameConfused Current cat is Jacquetta so unlikely to meet a namesake

PenCreed · 16/06/2017 13:06

My mum once had a doctor's appointment where the doctor looked at her name and said "oh, our dog is called X". As if she should be delighted. She was a bit unimpressed! For a while she thought we should get a new dog so she could name him after the doctor Smile.
It wasn't the coincidence that bothered her, it was that he thought she should be pleased.

RiversrunWoodville · 16/06/2017 13:06

Posted to soon, we also have a Rocky and Oy dogs and Badger the cat so some animal names too

PickAChew · 16/06/2017 13:06

I know several pooches and a cat with the same name as one of my kids. There's a particular comedian who pretty much built his career on a joke about it because one of his DC has the same name!

MOIST · 16/06/2017 13:06

I have a dog and a cat on Supers list Grin

JacquettaIsOffended · 16/06/2017 13:08

@RiversrunWoodville did you mean to be so rude when you named your cat Hmm

HazelBite · 16/06/2017 13:11

I must admit feeling a little bit embarrassed to tell my niece (when she asked) that the goldfish was called Harry, the name of her newborn, my excuse was that the goldfish was older than her son and he was called Harry, after Harry Kane!

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 16/06/2017 13:11

My friend's dog and I share a name. We both look up when she calls but I insist on a different type of biscuit.

JemDoughnut · 16/06/2017 13:12

An ex's mum hadn't heard my name before and really liked it. So much that when she got a new dog, she gave it my name.

If I didn't know how much she loved her pets, I might'be been offended. Grin

emwithme · 16/06/2017 13:12

My childhood dog was called Daniel.

I was always going to name any boy offspring Daniel (it's a good, solid name). Can't really do that now, as I married one instead Grin
