Mums offended by my dog?

I have a friendly, cuddly dog, he's a cross breed but one that most kids want to happily stroke (most adults too). Since he is a rescue he is always on a leash to prevent running off when not in a dog park area (so people approach him to meet him).

He has quite a common name that is being used for boys these days but is also a very common 'dog' name. Alfie.

The other day I was walking him and a mum and son came over, all ''aww he's so cute! can I stroke him?'' It was all good, then the kid asked me his name and I said ''Alfie'' and the mum got this sour look on her face and huffed, ''That's my son's name'' and ushered her son away in a mood.

Now its happened before that kids have had the same name as him and the parents laugh or the kids are quite happy but I was so Confused at this woman's reaction. Would you be annoyed if someone had a pet with the same name as your kid??

I once had a colleague who brought her new baby in to work to show her off. I asked her name and when she told me I replied( without thinking), 'Oh lovely, that's my cat's name.'

She looked proper annoyed! I thought Hmm.

My dog has a common name and nobody has ever been offended by that.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 16/06/2017 15:28

I had a boyfriend who had a dog with the same name as me. I thought it was funny.

Theweasleytwins · 16/06/2017 15:41

All I can think of is Imdiana Jones was named after a dog

TieGrr · 16/06/2017 15:52

I know an adult Ellie and a dog Ellie. Dog's owner is also friends with adult Ellie.

Before I knew about the presence of dog Ellie, I couldn't understand why dog's owner kept doing impressions of Ellie eating, or talked about bringing her to the beach for a walk.

needsomesunshineandwine · 16/06/2017 15:52

What an arse!!

I'm forever meeting dogs with the same name as me 😂

ZoniSouslaLune · 16/06/2017 16:25

When my dad and his brother were boys, they had dogs that they named after themselves. Apparently my grandmother didn't mind. Later when I was a teenager, my grandparents got a couple of kittens that they also named for my dad and uncle.

I'd have wanted to be a bit more creative myselfI've had cats called Zephyr, Elf Tiger, and Caspian for examplebut whatever. (Elf Tiger gets called "Elfy" a lot, which is pretty close to Alfy.)

Our other current cat is called Sasha. She came to us with that name.

Whatwankeryisthis · 16/06/2017 16:30

My little boy is called Archie, I don't know any other children with that name in the village but at least 3 dogs named Archie.

We also have an Alfie the dog across the road. Every dog I know bar one has a name which could quite easily be a human name.

We'll get a dog one day when our old lady puss cat shuffles off and if love to call her Bronte, I'd have called out DD a that but my husband wasn't having any of it!

Topseyt · 16/06/2017 16:44

My labrador is called Charlie. So are a number of young boys I know, including one in my own wider family.

This woman is an idiot. I would have been tempted to say I had named the dog after her child on purpose.

GahBuggerit · 16/06/2017 16:54

I know a dog called Brian and a cat called Sharon Grin

Borntoflyinfirst · 16/06/2017 16:58

Our dog has a human name - more often found as old men than children to be fair but there is a boy in dd's class with his name too.
Our dd1 has the name of an old pet dog of dh's and my name is also one belonging to a long gone pet of my dad's (from way before I was born).
So no I wouldn't be offended. In fact mums neighbours dog has dd2's name come to think of it. She finds it funny.

chickensaresafehere · 16/06/2017 16:58

Our dog Daisy met a little girl called Daisy in the beer garden at our local the other week, she was well chuffed to share her name with my dog & her parents were having a laugh about it.

HoopsMcCann · 16/06/2017 17:19

I had a dog called Paul Smile

29Palms · 16/06/2017 17:27

It's strange how almost all dogs are given "human" names these days.
When I was a child this was much less common.
Dogs had names like Rover, Spot, Patch, Prince, Fido, Scamp.
You rarely hear these names now. I might call my next dog Fido. Grin

ChilliChipolatas · 16/06/2017 17:31

I once met a lady and I asked her what her name was, when she replied, I said oh that's my dogs name, the person she was with then accused me of saying her name was a dogs name! I was mystified, trying to explain that, clearly I love that name if I called my dog (who I loved) it!
People are strange!

Here in Mexico it is taken as being very rude to give a dog a human's name. Back in the 70s so many dogs were called Kissinger

I've never had someone get huffy about my dog having a human name but I was once stopped by a older gentleman who told me off for having a "designer" mix breed (I have a really cute poodle mix) and how irresponsible it was to deliberately breed such dogs and how they have worse health and lot's end up in shelters just because this of this fad. At which point I responded that I agreed completely and in fact I adopted my dog from a rescue shelter. He just huffed and walked off, rude git.

StrawbRhi · 16/06/2017 18:54

A tiny dog bounded up to my then toddler DD in a park closely followed by a harridan woman screaming "Don't you dare touch her, Molly!"
DD is called Molly and was very upset as she thought she was being told off. When I explained to the woman that DD wasn't scared, and that her name was Molly too she said the a cats bum face: "why on earth did you give your child a dogs name?!" Hmm

Personally, if we ever get the golden retriever I dream of, he will be called Sir Digby Chicken Caesar.

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 17/06/2017 06:18

Our dog is called Ruby. When I meet people who have called their daughters Ruby I don't tell them our dogs name (just in case). It's different if they ask you first. We plan on getting another dog and calling him Charlie but SIL has just given birth to DN and named him Charlie so that's off the list now. Allie is a great name for a dog btw - and hardly original for a child, so she may get used to hearing it!!

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 17/06/2017 06:18

Allie = Alfie

WonderLime · 17/06/2017 06:29

My cats have human names (Edward and Gabriel), but I think it would be an offence to the cats if they weren't treated respectfully. Wink

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 17/06/2017 06:34

She is BU!

My colleague has named his baby boy the same name a my hamster (Toby) and another a few have a daughter with the same name as my dog (Lottie). No one has ever been offended

MidniteScribbler · 17/06/2017 06:37

I had a parent a number of years ago tell me off because one of my dogs had the same name as her child in my class and she didn't want me to talk about my dog as it might offend her child that she had the same name as a dog.

There are idiots everywhere.

Spudlet · 17/06/2017 06:38

What a very odd person. Must be exhausting to be that easily offended. You'd be in a state of perma-huff Grin

Dewey595 · 17/06/2017 06:55

Completely bonkers! To be honest I think those sort of people would have a similar reaction on meeting another child with the same name. They think their name choice is "so original".
