To not want to give to the Grenfell Tower Appeal through JustGiving

Stillamum3 · 16/06/2017 11:51

I want to give something to help the surviving residents of Grenfell Tower, but am reluctant to give through a JustGiving appeal, as from experience I know that JG deducts part of your donation before paying out. Do they waive this charge in a case like this? I am struggling to find another way - I read just now that the Red Cross had set up an appeal, but can't find a link to it!

I don't know whether what you say about JustGiving is true however I do know that the Salvation Army is running an appeal and all the money donated goes to cause.
here

Jellybean85 · 16/06/2017 12:02

As much as I hate that justgiving and other similar sites take a cut they can't waive the charge for this, or the Manchester appeal. Surely almost every appeal on there is some sort of charitable appeal or following bereavement or horrible event etc. Who would decide which are more worthy and don't pay the admin charge?

And yes there has to be an admin charge. They provide a service that costs money and makes it a hell of a lot easier for
People to donate than before the internet!

DubiousCredentials · 16/06/2017 12:04

I am hoping for a Red Cross appeal too. Really don't want to donate via the Salvation Army.

DubiousCredentials · 16/06/2017 12:05

Red Cross appeal details here actually Blush

SquirmOfEels · 16/06/2017 12:06

This is the fund that is backed by the Evening Standard

WorraLiberty · 16/06/2017 12:09

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to, OP?

If everyone felt the same, justgiving would cease to exist and many charities/individual desperate people would miss out massively.

hula008 · 16/06/2017 12:09

How do charity bosses get paid then if not taking a cut of any donations?

WorraLiberty · 16/06/2017 12:10

From their website...

Here's what we're busy doing for our 5% fee

Running, monitoring 24/7 and constantly improving JustGiving's technology so it can handle high levels of traffic while meeting the latest security and banking standards.

Constantly creating new fundraising tools and services for charities, at no extra cost.

Taking full responsibility for the Gift Aid we claim on charities' behalf, being regularly audited by HMRC.

Providing dedicated customer service for charities and their supporters, giving prompt and expert advice.

Giving charities full access to their data, helping them track and analyse their fundraising success.

Providing free support to charities (especially the small ones) on how to raise even more online.

Giving you a clean, junk-free experience. We'll never spam you, sell you anything or pass your personal details on to a third party. Ever.

AlpacaPicnic · 16/06/2017 12:14

I don't get the hate for JustGiving. They provide a service of convenience for people and nobody is forced to use that service, yet there are a lot of calls for them to waive their fees and charges.
Websites don't just build or maintain themselves, anything financial online requires security and it takes actual people with jobs to do these things. Do these people not deserve a wage for their work?

AlpacaPicnic · 16/06/2017 12:15

Oops, slow typing-while-eating crosspost there...

WorraLiberty · 16/06/2017 12:16

Exactly Alpaca

It doesn't make sense.

Hiphopopotamus · 16/06/2017 12:18

Any reason you don't want to donate via the Salvation Army dubious? You know they don't bash people round the head with a bible before they help them. They just help

FittonTower · 16/06/2017 12:18

If you want to set up a charity page BT donate don't take any cut. That's what my charity uses. The website and admin etc is funded through their social responsibility fund
Doesn't help with this particualar appeal but for future reference....

Ginslinger · 16/06/2017 12:22

I don't understand the hate for Just Giving either - they do a damned good job however, for this particular thing I would give to a charity that already exists and has experience in managing funds. The Dispossessed fund that was linked to above looks like it knows what it's doing

Birdsgottaf1y · 16/06/2017 12:25

They are saying not to because some are fake.

There will be genuine fundraising that you can give to.

I think in general Just Giving is good, I've donated to funerals of newborns,so they can have more than a basic funeral and similar causes, which unless you lived locally you wouldn't know about.

Before SM there was posters put up in the local area, but that limits your audience.

There are some very valid fundraising causes on JG as well as the ridiculous ones.

I feel that there is enough support Fire and Terrorist Victims, so don't give to them, i tend to pick 'smaller' personal requests.

Welshmaenad · 16/06/2017 12:27

I won't donate via the Salvation Army because I don't want to imply support for their abhorrent stance on same sex marriage.

TheNaze73 · 16/06/2017 12:29

It's a great site & proving to be ever more popular. Why don't you just donate an extra 5%?

MacarenaFerreiro · 16/06/2017 12:32

I don't get the hate for JustGiving

Some people believe that charities should operate on fresh air. No paid staff, reduce all other costs to the very bare minimum.

The real world doesn't operate like that. 5% seems fair for the service they provide.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 16/06/2017 12:36

I'm not either OP. Most of the banks have direct links with the Red Cross (Co-operative Bank definitely has) and you can pay directly there.

I don't hate 'Just Giving' but I'm not going to support it either, not when there are better and more accountable institutions.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 16/06/2017 12:39

Thanks for ten Red Cross link, it was so quick to donate through them by using PayPal.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/06/2017 12:40

It's not so much the "cut" taken that concerns me - more the fact that it's not always easy to know who the individual fundraisers actually are. I've no doubt most of these "crowdfunders" are perfectly genuine, but are there enough checks in place to prevent someone using it to make a fast buck for themselves?

Better, surely, to give through a well established charity ... admittedly they're not perfect either, but at least here's some sort of accountability in place

superfluffyanimal · 16/06/2017 12:48

Use MyDonate from BT instead, they don't charge.

specialsubject · 16/06/2017 12:48

If you donate directly to a charity website then only one lot of admin gets taken, by that charity.

Difference is that no one will know you donated - and that's why people use just giving etc.

justpeachy74 · 16/06/2017 12:51

I couldn't see a Gift Aid element on the Red Cross donation site. Did I miss it? That extra 25% makes a difference.
