To not want to give to the Grenfell Tower Appeal through JustGiving

I want to give something to help the surviving residents of Grenfell Tower, but am reluctant to give through a JustGiving appeal, as from experience I know that JG deducts part of your donation before paying out. Do they waive this charge in a case like this? I am struggling to find another way - I read just now that the Red Cross had set up an appeal, but can't find a link to it!

There are other options. Use the red cross, BT, salvation army... dislike of JustGiving doesn't stop you giving, if you want to.

The Kensington and Chelsea trust are doubling donations until their funds run out so a £20 donation becomes £40. You can still include gift aid which increases it a bit more.

There used to be a site that didn't take a fee- it was run by BT iirc: I used it 3 years ago when fundraising for Little Princess Trust. But the point of just giving is that it's a way to raise funds that wouldn't otherwise be raised - and, of course, it's a company itself, not a charitable enterprise.

Our local fire station had a bucket outside for GT monetary donations, ring/visit yours to see if they are doing similar.

DubiousCredentials · 16/06/2017 13:23

There was a gift aid bit when I donated via Red Cross earlier peachy.

Why don't I want to donate via the Salvation Army Hiphopopotamus? I don't give any money to religious organisations of any sort. Plus what Welshmaenad said.

As much as I agree that they can't function on air, there should be a cap on how much they take. A £115 000 fee on donations for the victims of this tragedy is too much for my liking (I'm still giving though, but I'd rather Just giving wouldn't take so much money out of it)

justpeachy74 · 16/06/2017 13:51

Thanks Dubious. When I tried using PayPal I didn't get the GIFT AID option and didn't want to risk it not taking it once I had completed the payment. However if you pay by card then the Gift Aid opt in is at the bottom of the page where it asks if it is a personal donation.

DubiousCredentials · 16/06/2017 13:55

Once the Paypal bit completed it goes back to the BRC page and then the gift aid part came up. But I realise you've done it now anyway Grin

elevenclips · 16/06/2017 14:03

OP the people who run just giving need to be paid don't they? They can't work for free. Do you want them to buy secure systems to protect your card details? Do you want them to run their offices outdoors in a park so they don't pay rent. Confused

I don't hate JustGiving, Ginslinger, but I would like all of what I give to go to the people who need it. When I've donated before it has usually been through Oxfam, or Save the Children and that is what happens then. I really don't care whether anyone knows whether I've given or not, as long as the money goes to the right place.
I understand they provide a service Alpaca ,which has to be administered, but I had expected the Mayor would have set up and administered a fund by now. I feel the way LyingWitch and Puzzled do, so will probably donate through my bank or through BT - I didn't know about that. Thanks for the links superfluffyand Squirm and everyone else. Thanks all.

I used the fund backed by the Evening Standard in the end. Really easy and quick via PayPal. There was a giftaid option, but unfortunately not a tax payer, so couldn't use that. Thank you Squirm

A previous poster posted the link to the Dispossessed Fund and that's where I will be donating. They're a registered charity, have already started paying out to community groups helping on the ground and they are the organisation my employer (who has a charitable foundation that researches things properly) has chosen to donate to so I am pretty confident that the money will go where it is needed with minimal admin costs.
