Obstruction of justice was the third article of impeachment against Bill Clinton in the House. And Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House.

Wait, so the Trump administration is going to interrogate U.S. citizens coming back from Cuba and make them prove why there were there?

This doesn't sound like freedom. This sounds like policing Americans like we live in an autocracy, rather than just visited one.

I'm confused.

If Cuba is an issue for human rights, then why does the US do deals in the Middle East?

For 58 years the people of Cuba have lived and labored under a repressive regime that stifles their freedom, and with it, their future.

Lweji · 16/06/2017 22:07

I was just watching a Maddow clip, which started by saying that Presidents couldn't be criminally indicted.

Except that Republicans made it possible for Clinton. It is possible now for a President to be taken to court for crimes during his presidency. Thanks to GOP.

Having said that, twice already GOP Presidents were pardoned by the following GOP President.

Sorry if repeated, but it was this one:

cozietoesie · 16/06/2017 22:08

Orlantina

Goodness. Because some of the Middle East give 45 medals and lots of manly dances. Wash your mind out with soap. Grin

Orlantina · 16/06/2017 22:10

Cognitive dissonance.

Human rights abuses are only bad if they are committed by someone who you don't do billion dollars with.

cozietoesie · 16/06/2017 22:14

I have just a feeling, Lweji, that the Constitution is silent on that possibility. (I stand to be corrected there.) There are some potential barriers that even I can see though.

I guess it was assumed that it could never get that far.

Lweji · 16/06/2017 22:16

It looks like they've forgotten what the embargo to Cuba was all about... It's a fossil now, really.

On funnier news...

Fox News Is Ditching Their Slogan 'Fair And Balanced'

"I assume because they finally watched themselves" says Stephen, who suggests a few other slogans.

lionheart · 16/06/2017 22:17

...and there are no (Florida) votes involved.

SanFranBear · 16/06/2017 22:33

OMG - after a few days in the wilderness, I can post again Grin

So my thoughts on the shitstorm that is this presidency - and which I kept trying to post, bloody MN

  • I cannot believe Scrotus' statement over the shooting of poor Scalise made me see red. No one other than the shooter died and yet he releases an A4 statement about how it's the worst thing the world has ever seen (I paraphrase somewhat but there was a sentence in there stating something similar) which was a gross overstatement. Fucking prick!

  • Couldn't be bothered to welcome Melania to the WH. Fucking prick!

  • I'm not sure how damaging Comey or Sessions really were. It's all small cracks that will hopefully cause the wall to break but he's riding the storm for now (so disappointing, fucking prick)

  • Talking of walls, good piece on how much shit he's in with the boootiful wall on the BBC today: Fucking Prick

  • I can no longer listen to him even say a sentence as he makes my skin crawl so sadly (Hmm), I'll have to pass on any of his rallies or speeches.

  • and finally, he is just one big smelly, cheese-encrusted, teeny weeny fucking prick.

I realise I have probably reduced my chances of ever entering the US over the next three and a half years to zero, but I don't care.

Argh - with everything that's happened in the UK over the last few weeks with the attacks, the election and that utterly tragic fire... feels like the world has just taken a leap into the fucking crazy at the moment and I am heart sick Sad and livid Angry

Welcome back from the wilderness, SanFranBear.

But yes.

cozietoesie · 16/06/2017 22:41

Oh good, Pain.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/06/2017 22:43

Orlantina the US 'attitude' towards Cuba goes back to the early '60s, the Missile Crisis, and the fear of 'Commies invading the US via Cuba'. I can remember as a little girl the 'grownups' talking about Russia invading Florida to take over the US as a possibility. The anti-Castro feelings within the Cuban American community are also unbelievably strong. And I think Fidel giving the US a big middle finger and buddying up to Moscow instead of accepting US aid and rejecting communism really stung the Washington DC establishment and left them with a huge case of sour grapes. That's why it took until 2014 before a US president (Obama) dared to start the 'Cuban Thaw' and until 2016 before relations were 'somewhat' normalized.

You can bet that Scrotus will leave the door open to 'business opportunities'. And I'm sure he (or Don Jr) dangled a 'Trump Tower Havana' in front of Cuban officials noses in exchange for keeping the gates open and they turned him down flat.

cozietoesie · 16/06/2017 22:47

It would likely have been a different story, otherwise.

Lweji · 16/06/2017 22:47

Ups, earlier it was the wrong Maddow clip.

It was supposed to be this one:

(I hope it's right this time, as I thought I had corrected it earlier too)

cozietoesie · 16/06/2017 22:51

Ah Yes. I've seen that one. Some fond (and not so fond) memories were evoked.

Lweji · 16/06/2017 22:56

...and there are no (Florida) votes involved.

Good point.

I may have been too pessimistic about the WaPo sources and the various hearings. I've just spent what seemed like a considerable time watching Lawrence O'Donnell so a link to one piece follows. (It may lead on to others in reverse date order - if so, I'll see you all tomorrow to offer you matchsticks for your eyes! Grin)

AcrossthePond55 · 17/06/2017 02:42

US Navy vessel in serious trouble on the high seas and not a word from our 'so-called Commander in Chief'. You'd think he'd at least tweet a message of support and admiration for the sailors dealing with this crisis. No, he's too busy praising himself and his idiotic reversal of Obama's Cuba Policy. Wanker-in-Chief, more likely!

My thoughts and prayers are with the crew, the injured, and the families of the missing sailors.
