Rand Paul who was there has said that were it not for the fact that Scalise was there, they'd probably all have been killed. That's because he's a top official (can't remember what exactly) and so came with his own security, who were the ones to manage the situation.

So Id imagine the debate would go something like "we need more guns, they protect us, that's what saved lives here" etc.

Paul's words were 'Nobody else had a weapon so he was just killing everyone - or he would have' So yeah, everyone should have guns will be their takeaway from it. Idiots.

Surely if everybody had a gun, there would be more people dead as they'd be likely to shoot anyone with a gun as a suspect, and everyone would have a gun and would thus be a suspect.

It's a good thing that only the police were armed.

I find it hard to believe that 'no one else had a weapon' if Scalise had a govt security detail present.

I just hate this. The GOP & alt right are going to have a field day if it turns out the shooter was a Dem or left-leaning. They're also going to use it to push for less gun control. One of our Trumpette friends already thinks that it should be mandatory that ALL adults have a weapon (a la Switzerland) in their home. After this, he's going to think we should all be toting them on our hips, John Wayne style.

It may not be a Dem, though. Plenty of the alt right are angry at GOP members of Congress for not rubber-stamping the Wall, ACA repeal, and other Trump idiocy.

Obviously Scrotus didn't write that statement himself. It's too dignified.
