Help - toad screaming in the sofa! AIBU to call DH to come home?

I know this sounds dramatic, but AIBU? I have a phobia of frogs and toads. I can and have dealt with the odd stray mouse but amphibians - no.

On Friday, I was on the house in my own and I heard what I thought was the kitchen back door creaking on its hinges, but it was a weird noise. I went in there, only to find a massive toad in the middle of the floor. I just froze - I can't even bring myself to look the things! It was making this unearthly squeaking noise and the cat seemed scared of it.

I was late for a wax appt, so I just went and shut it in the kitchen, leaving the back door open and put the cat in the front part of the house so he couldn't get to it.

I also thought I heard a kind of croaking like an echo coming from the living room, but I had to go.

When I came back the thing had gone thank god. There is nowhere it can hide in the kitchen. The dishwasher and cupboards were shut, so it must have hopped outside. DD's Nintendo DS sometimes makes weird noises, so I thought the other noise in the living room must have been that vibrating or some kind of alarm.

We've been away for the weekend, but today, to my horror, there is the same screaming sound coming from the sofa in the living room! There must be a toad in there that was calling to the one on Friday in the way they do across ponds. I can't bring myself to pull the cushions off in case it jumps! It could have been lying flat for god knows how long.

AIBU to call DH to come back from work asap to get the toad out? He's meant to be going to the airport at 4pm, then he's away until Fri. I can't live like this until then! AIBU or is that too ridiculous? I can't ask the neighbours.

Get your husband home

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 12/06/2017 11:57

When is the postman due? Could you ask him?!

BastardBloodAndSand · 12/06/2017 11:58

You need to get it outside or it will die.

It will also shit everywhere, throw a towel over it. Grab it and dump it in the pond.

Oooblimey · 12/06/2017 11:58

Oh I'm sorry but this made me lol! Get hubby home!! Grin

Elipsical · 12/06/2017 11:59

I'm also phobic about frogs and toads, just opening this thread has made me feel breathless. Get out of the house, stay out and call 999. Okay, maybe not but definitely call someone. I'd then get rid of the sofa, I'd never be able to sit on it again.
Sell the house too.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 12/06/2017 12:01

Can you get a neighbour to come and help?

daisygirlmac · 12/06/2017 12:03

Burn your house down. It's the only answer.

Aquablu · 12/06/2017 12:03

This is the sofa. I managed to look underneath briefly. Can't see anything. The noise is hideous. Could it be under the cushions? Not sure if they can climb vertically?

Phobias are horrible- might seem irrational to non-phobic but that is kind of the point. If I was next door, I would step in and help. Which is no use to you. But I would suggest you contact a neighbour.
Outside chance there's a local animal rescue who would help in return for the promise of a big donation.
Or a vet? Although they'd probably be far too busy. Offer a big donation to charity of their choice and they might be able to rustle up some help.
Good luck.

herebehippos · 12/06/2017 12:06

Off topic but that is a gorgeous sofa! It could have hopped up and then fallen behind cushions. Can you get a broom handle to push the cushions off the sofa?

BreconBeBuggered · 12/06/2017 12:07

Agree with calling on a neighbour, even if the nearest house is a mile away. I'd be the same if a bird got in; once I got the shopkeeper across the road to close up so that he could come over and catch a sparrow for me.
I hope the toad hasn't found a hole and buried itself inside. I have no end of dog toys that disappear down the innards of my sofa, never to be seen again

user1andonly · 12/06/2017 12:09

Oh you poor thing!

If I was your neighbour, I would cheerfully come and find it for you as I quite like toads (am pertrified of spiders though so can well imagine how you feel!)

Are you sure you can't ask a neighbour? We have a few who I reckon would relish the challenge!

If you really can't, then I don't think it would be unreasonable to get your DH home at some point this afternoon.

Aquablu · 12/06/2017 12:09

Oh god, could it have gone flat and got in the radiator even?

What a dilemma, I remember my grandmother was really phobic of frogs and toads too.

If you can bear it the idea to get a big thick towel that you could throw over it and use it to scoop it up and throw it outside is a good one. But I understand you're scared of pulling the cushions off in case it jumps...

No workmen in the street outside who might give you a hand?

How far away is your husband's work? If it's close I'd say call him. If it's far, maybe not so much...

rizlett · 12/06/2017 12:13

Closest I could find to sofa on the internet was this....

ohforfoxsake · 12/06/2017 12:13

I'd get DH home. Seriously.

I'm feeling anxious just reading the thread.

Aquablu · 12/06/2017 12:14

He's in town (London) about 5 miles away. I can't ask the neighbours as they don't like us since the extension work. I will call him now.

I dont have a phobia of toads and frogs but this would still freak me out!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/06/2017 12:17

Oh I thought you meant you got home and. It was sitting on the couch watching the Telly with the remote, and a glass of wine As though it owned the gaff.Grin

Aquablu · 12/06/2017 12:19

It's going to voicemail. He must be in meetings. I've sent 2 urgent texts. I can't even watch that video, it's like my worst nightmare.

VestalVirgin · 12/06/2017 12:20

Don't you have any friends you can call?

To be fair, they will probably laugh (I know I would) but your husband has to catch a flight, that's really inconvenient.

Huffletuff · 12/06/2017 12:21

A little off topic but I want your sofa! Where did you get it from please?

My DH would never come home for that, lol. If he does that's brilliant. I'm arachnaphobic and I once called him at work because there was a tarantula/house spider at the bottom of the stairs. He wouldn't come home and the most I could do was throw a few cats at it, but they ignored it. I had to stay upstairs for seven hours as I couldn't pass it.

BigDamnHero · 12/06/2017 12:21

You could post roughly where in the country you are; maybe a kind Mumsnetter could pop round to help? If you're anywhere near Heathrow I could come round!

Me too, I'd be worried about sitting down on the toad if I wasn't able to find it and get it out. Wouldn't have a problem with removing the pillows, though.
