To be supplied with the brackets to attach shelf to wall

So I bought a box wall shelf to go above my DD's top bunk for her to put books on, having checked the weight this shelf is advertised as being able to hold is sufficent for the weight of the books, I built it this afternoon and it doesnt come with the wall fixings, you have to go and buy them, nowhere has any as described in the instructions and nowhere does the item say before you buy it that it doesnt come complete.

So i cannot put it up as I cannot source these L shaped screws that hold the thing to the wall.

I am also now very unsure about how they could have stress tested it to the weight they say it can hold if they dont supply the wall fixings as there is no specifications as to type length etc... Just a picture of the type of screws you need.

Would I be unreasonable to ask for a large discount or for them to refund me for these even though they have been assembled? Never occured to me that they would not come with the necessary items to attach them to the wall.

Ikea have them for free you just help yourself if you live nearby.

OohAahBird · 11/06/2017 23:23

Sadly live nowhere near an ikea, am appreciating how good ikea now is!
I just think it's completely unreasonable to supply an item that is only designed and sold to be attached to a wall without the actual fixing to attach it to the wall. Especially when the fixing you need is not available in 3 highstreet hardware stores (not out of stock dont sell them)

Yes it's stupid, little point to a shelf if it's not attached to a wall.

caroldecker · 11/06/2017 23:33

You could rest the shelf on the floor - that will probably hold the weight of the books.

OohAahBird · 11/06/2017 23:34

Not sure how she would reach them on the floor from the top of her bunk bed though

TipBoov · 11/06/2017 23:35

Well it really depends on the type of wall you have as to what fixings you need, so I suppose it's not cost-effective to include different types.

UpLighter · 11/06/2017 23:37

Often on shelfs they aren't supplied as it depends on what sort of wall you are fitting it onto such as a stud or brick wall.
Is a pain and they should make clear on the packaging.

OohAahBird · 11/06/2017 23:38

Raw plugs, normal screws absolutely I can supply them, but this is a non standard fixing that nowhere seems to sell that i cannot put the damn thing up without!

Its one of these floating type shelves that doesnt have visible brackets

OP posts:
VoteMe · 11/06/2017 23:40

Where did you get them from?
I can't picture the type of screws you are talking about.

VoteMe · 11/06/2017 23:42

Actually, come to think of it I think I know the type of screws. You could order them on Amazon?

OohAahBird · 11/06/2017 23:42

They look like this

Screw Hook Square Zinc 60mm (Pack of 6) (Product Code - U-B0831C) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001HUXTPA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_8LCpzbK66MS5F?tag=mumsnetforum-21

These look similar?

OohAahBird · 11/06/2017 23:57

Have had a look Amazon have some, but in all different sizes, which goes back to my original post, if they dont supply them, how do i know i have bought the right size ones to support the weight of a not inconsiderable weight of a shelf, plus the items added on it when in use.
When no other information is given except a picture!

I was going to suggest square cup hooks from screwfix. However I think that graphic may be telling you to use fixings suitable to your application rather than specific fixings. What type of wall are you fixing to and how do you want the fixing to locate in the shelf?

OohAahBird · 12/06/2017 00:09

Its a really specific attachment device I have never seen before, they arent normal shelves, think floating shelves that have a hole in the back for this L shaped screw to hook onto, the whole weight of these shelves is on these 2 little L shaped screws

OP posts:
OohAahBird · 12/06/2017 00:14

This is the page I got to and then realised that the L shaped screws shown are not included.

I don't expect all shelves to come with wall fixings as you need different things for different walls.

Do you have a local hardware shop or a B&Q? I'd take the shelf there and ask for help.

Scoobydoobydont · 12/06/2017 00:21

This wall you expected the shelf manufacturer to know about......is it breezeblock, thermalite, brick, stone, dot and dab, studwork etc etc?

How are they supposed to know what type of wall the person who buys the shelf will have?

OohAahBird · 12/06/2017 00:51

Because if you read the thread they are telling me i need a type of screw to attach the shelf to the wall on their specific attachment that so far i have only found on amazon.

It is a floating shelf, nothing to do with what type of wall i have!

OP posts:
OohAahBird · 12/06/2017 00:53

Been to local harware shops, they looked at the brackets on the shelf and the picture of the one it tells me to buy and have been bemused and they dont stock them

From the diagram it looks as though there are just two round holes in the back board of the shelving unit to take the fixings. Is this correct? If so then you can screw this back to the wall and don't need hooks - I think your are taking the first picture too literally. If the wall is brick or block then you will need red plastic wall plugs (5/6mm) and and wood screws 3.5mm-4mm diameter. The screws should be long enough to get 50mm in the wall. If its a dot and dab wall then you should over bore the giles in the plaster board and make sure that the plug is flush with the block work, make sue that the screw is long enough to get 50mm in the block work (thickness of plasterboard plus gap plus shelf back board plus 50mm). In the case of dot and dab make sure you only do the screws up to the point the heads just touch the back board.
If its a stud wall then life is a little harder. Because it's pre defined centres it's unlikely that you will catch two studs or noggins. Whilst you cold use plasterboard fixings (aluminium or plastic fixings with an outer coarse thread to engauge with plasterboard, accepting a 3.5mm screw in the middle) I wouldn't do so in this instance due to loading. I would in this instance cut a board to the same size as the shelving units or a little larger(18mm thick). Using 4 or six plaster board fixings screw this to the wall then screw the unit to the board with wood screws long enough to pass right through the board. Hope this helps.

picklemepopcorn · 12/06/2017 06:39

Can you contact the shelf company for clarification? Have you checked they aren't taped to the packaging somewhere?

picklemepopcorn · 12/06/2017 07:01

Call me over invested but... I found them online.
You can contact them on a live chat.
They clearly include the same fixings with other shelf units, so I'd argue they should send them out to you.

This shelf unit is only suitable for up to 3kg which isn't much, by the way!

OohAahBird · 12/06/2017 08:46

Pickle - Yes my plan is to call them this morning, as you say they include these fixings in other units. Have checked definitely not in the boxes, i have 4 of them, they are very shallow, just needed something for very lightweight childrens paperbacks, which i weighed, but am not convinced these hooks are going to hold the weight of the shelves tbh, they are quite heavy.
I do loads of DIY, my only other idea is to completely ignore there attachment system and buy some attachments that you use for kitchen cupboards.
