Do children/teens need tvs in their bedrooms nowadays and do your dc's have a tv in their rooms?

Having an ongoing debate with DH. He says the dcs (8 & 9) need tv's in their rooms to watch dvds etc. I don't think it is necessary anymore, as it was when I was young. They can watch anything on their tablets now and I think ugly black tv's in bedrooms look a bit shit.

What do you all think and do your dc's have their own tv and why?

I don't think it has ever been necessary has it?

DSD is 7 and does not have one, has never asked for one either.

bigchris · 11/06/2017 18:26

We don't allow electronics upstairs, dcs are 13 and 10

squiggleirl · 11/06/2017 18:26

I didn't need a tv in my rom as a kid, and my kids don't need one now either. If they want to watch tv, they do so downstairs. We share.

Donttakemeout · 11/06/2017 18:27

Mine never had one. They had Netflix and sky apps on laptops

SafeToCross · 11/06/2017 18:28

Mine have just twigged they can watch most things on their laptops in their rooms. I think it is preferable to a tv, as you can easily enforce a curfew (put laptop on charge downstairs) and limit use. And a netflix subscription has to be less than buying lots of dvd's. I think you are right, times have changed (although I also am on the fence about screens/tvs in bedrooms, mainly because I quite want one).

witsender · 11/06/2017 18:28

No from us. We o my ever had one in the front room.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 11/06/2017 18:28

I've only had a TV in my room during the university years.

I agree that it's probably less attractive to young people than it was 10+ years ago. Streaming is replacing DVDs anyway as well as tablets.

Long term I'd put a second TV into our playroom, mainly for a games console. We don't have a TV in our room so there's no precedent in our house.

Sirzy · 11/06/2017 18:28

Nobody needs One!

Ds is 7 and doesn't have one and won't be any time soon!

Italiangreyhound · 11/06/2017 18:28

There are no TVs in our bedrooms and I think never will be.

A lap top to watch a DVD for a sleepover is all my poor kids get. Grin

Allthebestnamesareused · 11/06/2017 18:28

No TVs and no electronics in bedroom on a permanent basis. Is allowed ipad and speaker up there but it is downstairs in the kitchen by 10pm.

corythatwas · 11/06/2017 18:29

Mine are 20 and 16. Don't have TVs in rooms and never have. Ds does sometimes take the laptop up to watch DVDs though, but even that isn't something I would have encouraged when he was 8.

justkeepswimmingg · 11/06/2017 18:29

I personally wouldn't bother, due to not wanting electronics upstairs. I'd stick to keeping it all downstairs, but obviously it's personal preference and up to you and DH.

MaQueen · 11/06/2017 18:30

No. Our DDs don't have them, but to be honest they never watch TV anyway. They just watch endless YouTube stuff on their laptops.

MrsJayy · 11/06/2017 18:31

They don't need a tv in their room mine had 1 for watching videos then dvds meant we didn't need to watch them but you don't need to do anything you don't want to do

umberellaonesie · 11/06/2017 18:31

No.
16, 12, 7 year old here. No electronics in the bedroom

That1950sMum · 11/06/2017 18:32

I think its better to have a TV to play DVDs than to allow phones or tablets upstairs. MY DCs (age 11) have a TV that can play DVDs only - no aerial for normal TV. They have a very strict no gadgets in their bedrooms rule.

DramaAlpaca · 11/06/2017 18:32

It's never been necessary to have TVs in bedrooms. What an odd thing to say. We've never had TVs in bedrooms and my DC never asked for them.

No screens in bedrooms.

Unless you actually want to ruin your children's sleep and thus their education and their lives...

RitaMills · 11/06/2017 18:35

My DS (7) has a TV in his room, it's not connected to an ariel so he can't watch TV on it, it's used for Wii U, Xbox and he can watch Netflix on it. It isn't nesessery but he likes playing on his consoles or watching Netflix cartoons while he plays his Lego.

mamalovesmojitos · 11/06/2017 18:36

No tv in bedrooms here. Occasionally dd (13) will watch a movie in bed on laptop for a treat, maybe once a month. Otherwise no screen in bedroom.

Boomcack · 11/06/2017 18:38

We don't allow electronics the bedroom at all, that includes phone, tablet, iPod. DD does have books though for bedtime reading,in my view it's not a necessarily and frankly can interrupt your child's sleep

Radishal · 11/06/2017 18:40

No tv in bedroom

harderandharder2breathe · 11/06/2017 18:43

It sounds like it's not even the kids wanting them but DH?!

If so I would leave it til the kids ask (if they ever do) and assess then depending on how old they are

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 11/06/2017 18:43

Nope.

Not needed and no electronics in bedrooms at all here.
