Do children/teens need tvs in their bedrooms nowadays and do your dc's have a tv in their rooms?

Having an ongoing debate with DH. He says the dcs (8 & 9) need tv's in their rooms to watch dvds etc. I don't think it is necessary anymore, as it was when I was young. They can watch anything on their tablets now and I think ugly black tv's in bedrooms look a bit shit.

What do you all think and do your dc's have their own tv and why?

It's not a need is it? More of a nice luxury. Dh & I both got tvs in our rooms from about 14/15. We plan on doing the same with our dc. By that age they'll have their own taste in programmes just as we did.

MrsJayy · 11/06/2017 20:00

Fast track to obesity and bad exam results rightyo Confused

Cleanermaidcook · 11/06/2017 20:01

No one needs them do they, however
ds 7 has one in his room - he's never switched it on!
dd 9 has one and watches dvd's occasionally.
Neither can access tv or anything else on them, just dvd's.
I don't allow laptops/tablets upstairs because i like to be able to control what they're watching and can only do that with dvd's.

OwlsinTowls · 11/06/2017 20:01

I had one as a kid for PlayStation and videos.

It's not needed, though. My DD will have one but it will be unplugged etc at night.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 11/06/2017 20:01

To add we do have one in our room. Dh uses it to watch the football & I'll sometimes stick it on if I'm folding washing up there.

Sparklingbrook · 11/06/2017 20:02

'Obesity and poor exam results'. Well my DC seem to not be obese or have poor results. They must have slipped through the net. Grin

BeyondThePage · 11/06/2017 20:03

We have TV in the living room - it is a social device for us - we watch together. No devices in the bedrooms here either. (DDs 14 and 16)

The kids have a "den" - posh term for the box room, has an electric piano, guitar, sofa bed and a small TV with the old PS2 in there - they can sit play naff old games with mates or watch DVDs together.

missiondecision · 11/06/2017 20:05

Don't need one.
My 3 all have 1 each in their room
They never, ever use it.

TheFairyCaravan · 11/06/2017 20:06

It is a terrible idea and a fast track to obesity and poor exam results.

Hmm

Oh give over. Just because it's there it doesn't mean they are watching it 24/7 365 days of the year.

Our children had TVs in their bedrooms as well as PlayStations then later on laptops, iPhones and iPads. They got excellent exams results and neither of them are obese.

Libitina · 11/06/2017 20:06

DS is 23 and still lives at home. He never had a tv in his room growing up and still chooses to not have one. Although, to be fair, he does watch most stuff online.

We have a shitload of technological gadgets in the house but only have one tv albeit a fucking huge one.

MaQueen · 11/06/2017 20:07

"Obesity and poor exam results'. Well my DC seem to not be obese or have poor results. They must have slipped through the net."

Agree sparkling. Both our DDs have somehow slipped through the net too...and literally hundreds and hundreds of other girls at their school (which gets excellent exam results).

Sparklingbrook · 11/06/2017 20:09

YY MaQueen, I must demand a remark of DS2's A* mock exam paper last week. Grin

scottishdiem · 11/06/2017 20:10

Obesity in children can be blamed on poor parenting, not televisions.

Poor exam results - depends. If the child underperforms due to playing Xbox at 3am then is the problem with the child, parent or the Xbox? If a child is not academically inclined then replacing the TV with a library isn't going to help them pass an exam as knowledge transfer via osmosis while sleeping isn't a thing.

kali110 · 11/06/2017 20:10

I had one. I never watch things on my laptop or tablet.
It is a terrible idea and a fast track to obesity and poor exam results.
I had fantastic exam results thankyou Hmm
I was more than capable of studying with a tv etc in my bedroom.

RitaMills · 11/06/2017 20:11

Of course a tv doesn't cause obesity and poor exam results, just because a child has a tv in their room doesn't mean their glued to it constantly and have free rein to watch whatever and whenever they want. It's not all nothing. Hmm

MaQueen · 11/06/2017 20:11

Yep, you had better sparkling and that has prompted me to query DD2's recent gold award in the Maths Challenge Hmm

kali110 · 11/06/2017 20:13

My ddad never had to unplug either.
If i didn't do my homework that was always the threat, so homework was always done Smile

upperlimit · 11/06/2017 20:13

No, my kids don't have TVs in their rooms. I don't think it's that big of a deal for other people's kids or it is a reflection on the quality of parenting in a home - it's just that I can't risk my dc's sleep becoming any worse than it already is.

user1484615313 · 11/06/2017 20:13

My ds 16 says he can actually think better when he has noise in the background like TV or radio. He has been getting perfect grades.

Amammi · 11/06/2017 20:14

No screens in bedrooms including phones

Lweji · 11/06/2017 20:16

Mine is 12 and he doesn't.

Not for aesthetic reasons. Hmm
And I don't mind watching his programmes and watching mine at separate times. I think that's the problem for your OH. Wink

wineusuallyhelps · 11/06/2017 20:17

My 10 and 12 year old have them. They usually watch DVDs at times agreed with us. No games consoles allowed to be connected.

They are both slim, fit and good achievers at school....

Thirtyrock39 · 11/06/2017 20:19

My older ones (9 and 11) have tv and DVD player as I can't work out these days how you get tv without a sky box or similar these days . Good actually as they can only watch DVDs
There's not supposed to have iPads etc in their bedroom though

greenlavender · 11/06/2017 20:20

TVs are never necessary in bedrooms are they?

UrsulaPandress · 11/06/2017 20:21

Sheesh. We don't even have daytime TV let alone in bedrooms!
