Or is Owen Jones one very angry young man?

Just sat down to watch a bit of news. Saw he was on Sky (despite THAT tantrum), can't be doing with him so flick to BBC24 and there is he participating in a round-table "discussion" - which for Owen Jones means glowering at everyone then furiously and darkly laying into the host and publicly scratching away at that chip on his shoulder. He cannot debate, can only sulk, strop and spout off as though he is the bloody oracle and no-one else knows anything. He talks over everyone. He's a very stroppy sort of grownup.

I love Owen Jones. He has the confidence to go against the establishment. Plus, he's correct - most of the time.

CrossWordSalad · 11/06/2017 12:27

His books are very good, strangely. I would highly recomend both Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class and The Establishment: And how they get away with it

The problem is, if he used the excellent political analysis he used in those books in his journalism, he would get sacked by the Guardian pretty damn quick. So he doesn't.

topcat2014 · 11/06/2017 12:34

Who is he? must be getting old

The80sweregreat · 11/06/2017 12:35

Against the grain, but i like him.

NotJanine · 11/06/2017 12:38

What are his views on women/lesbians/porn?

mummag · 11/06/2017 12:41

What has he said about some etc that's so outrageous. I always liked him so have missed this somehow.

Code42 · 11/06/2017 12:42

But he doesn't really analyse anything in The Establishment, and certainly doesn't offer any solutions Confused

I find him petulant and charmless, ferociously precious and quite ignorant at times. But then, as PP have noted, I'm apparently a bit older than his target market Grin

Jux · 11/06/2017 12:49

He's alright, but he is very rude and patronising. Also, I only know of one place where one says one's piece without interruption, and that's a debating club. In rl, people do interrupt each other, interject and so on. He doesn't like it and gets even ruder and more petulant

He should get off tv and just blog.

Sprinklestar · 11/06/2017 12:57

YABU for bringing age into it. Who cares how old he is? Hmm

TheBogQueen · 11/06/2017 13:07

I read 'Chavs' and got it

but I thought the endless examples of the daily mail , the sun etc was a bit like shooting fish in a barrel

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/06/2017 13:19

He's sometimes right, but his attitude to lesbians is pretty crap, and he has that tendency, which I think is too common in left-wing men, of thinking that women are all middle-class biddies who can't possibly understand his struggle.

notjanine - in a nutshell, he got into a fairly unedifying conversation about whether or not lesbians should be required to have sex with pre-op transwomen. Someone tried to explain to him that not all lesbians would feel comfortable with this by asking him (as a gay man) to think whether he'd feel comfortable having sex with a pre-op trans man who had a vagina. He flipped out and said this was appalling homophobia. My understanding is that he genuinely just didn't realise that women might have just as complicated a sexuality as men. It wasn't good to watch.

The80sweregreat · 11/06/2017 13:25

'The establishment ...by O J was good, made me think more about how things fit together. Im sure there are better books about it, but for a novice like me it was easy to read and understand. A good starting point for general reading.
Not read chavs.

HemanOrSheRa · 11/06/2017 13:26

This is his Guardian article on porn www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/mar/30/simon-danczuk-mp-watched-porn-who-cares.

This is a good article about Owen Jones and his attitude to women and porn. www.allmotherswork.co.uk/?p=223

Bejazzled · 11/06/2017 13:27

He is an opinionated dick head. If you don't agree with him then he shouts about how wrong everyone else is

FithColumnist · 11/06/2017 13:40

"Angry young man" is pretty dismissive OP, he's 32! But YANBU to think he's a bit of a prick.

Terfing · 11/06/2017 19:13

Sadly, I do think he is one of the reasons for the Guardian's sharp decline in readership.

limitedperiodonly · 11/06/2017 19:47

I doubt many of those mocking Danczuk would be all that comfortable with a quick trawl through their own internet history being made public.

^^ From Heman's Guardian link. I'd be perfectly happy for people to look at my browsing history. They might get a bit bored though. I wonder what Owen looks up?

explodingkittens · 11/06/2017 19:50

I don't like Owen Jones, but there's plenty to be angry about, imo, whether you're young or old.

Ktown · 11/06/2017 19:56

I liked chavs.
He is a bit of a stereotype liberal elite type who I imagine lives in the crummy bit of Hampstead.
I hate the guardian and him mentioning the daily mail all the time though.

PoochSmooch · 11/06/2017 19:59

YANBU, OP. Owen seems stuck at the stage of stroppy teen at debating society. And he is no friend to women- that's a great article heman.

RandomChocolate8 · 11/06/2017 20:02

I quite like him.

metspengler · 11/06/2017 20:06

He needs someone to pull his trousers up and tell him how to compose himself in polite company.

This is what happens when you spoil DS I think, it's great while they're small and cute, probably less so when they pass 18 and you realise you have to put up with a squealing homunculus for a son for the rest of your life.

PaperdollCartoon · 11/06/2017 20:08

I really like him. Saw him speak at something a few years ago and it was one of the best speeches I've ever heard. He's impassioned yes but he's not wrong to be.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 11/06/2017 20:11

Oh god yes YANBU.

Stroppy man child with a chip on his shoulder.

He did the whole "trans women are real women and lesbians should consider them women", then when challenged if he would give cunnilingus to a transman, had a Paddy and cried homophobia! Twat

Supernothing22 · 11/06/2017 20:17

I really like him but I'm a lefty Corbyn lover so my views align very much with his.

I like the fact that he speaks his mind and has helped get the youth vote and rally the momentus following that Labour had this election.
