to seriously resent security charades

My DD has some SEN like issues so the unexpected appearance of a security charade at the Sage Gateshead was basically game over regarding her attending her lesson there this morning.

I seriously resent this bullshit. Actual security where needed is one thing. Standing around wearing yellow jackets glancing in people's bags is not actually providing any security whatsoever. On top of this it was creating a bottleneck and a nice juicy looking queue outside the building - so actively increasing the security risk from basically zero, to very slightly more than basically zero.

So on the basis that their security charade both made the members of the public marginally less safe, and also prevented my girl from accessing education, AIBU to award the Sage the Morphene Star for doing the terrorists job for them?

I completely believe the OP, that the security was a charade. The only thing to do when confronted with absurdity is to remember that the people involved are honest and are just doing their job.

Bottles aren't allowed at concerts in case people pee in them and throw them onstage. Not bomb related.

JamieXeed74 · 12/06/2017 21:55

Security checks might seem pointless but they are a deterrent to actual terrorists. Absolutely not a charade.

How? All the terrorists need to do is send someone ahead of them carrying nothing, to experience whether the security check is real or not and then just send a text to those behind carrying the bomb or weapons that they can go through.

BoomBoomsCousin · 14/06/2017 04:17

More easily than that, the terrorist can just target the crowd the security check has created.

In the Paris attacks security stopped one suicide bomber from entering the football stadium, saving many lives.

JamieXeed74 is right actually.

I sat through a security briefing following the London Bridge/Borough Market attack. There is a lot they do behind the scenes but a lot of potential attacks or reconnaissance is stopped due to visible security or somebody asking them a question if they look a bit shifty. Visible deterrent is a major part of what helps keep us safe.

The overriding message is if you see someone or something that does not look right to ring 101 or the hotline number to report it or 999 if you think its an immediate threat. Currently most reports are made 24 hours after the member of public saw whatever it was, making it very hard to track down.

So, so sad to hear of the people who died in the London Tower Block. Surely, the time, effort and money being spent to put on a show of "security" would be better spent on preventing problems like this

I will admit shamefacedly to wondering if there will now also be a fireman greeting us at the Sage, or if paranoia doesn't extend to deadly fires breaking out.

I am sure as the death toll reaches it terrible final value, we will see that the tower fire will have killed far more people than terrorism.

And unlike with the terrorism we actually had/have it in our power to prevent such an atrocity from occurring. The government kills so many people by treating them as less than human, whether it is cramming them into high rise social housing, or declaring them fit for work when they aren't. I wish they wouldn't.
