Dogs at polling stations

AIBU to be annoyed that I was told "no dogs allowed" at 'my' polling station. I think it's shit to expect dog owners to tie up their dogs outside or be held by strangers if visiting alone as anything could happen! Shouldn't be one rule for one venue and another rule for others when we don't have a choice of which polling station to visit.

Did your dog need to go voting?

JoWithABow · 08/06/2017 22:43

What was your dog going to vote for? The liberal doggercrates, pupservatives or UPAW?

Jellybean85 · 08/06/2017 22:44

What? All the dogsatpollongstations pics I saw the dog was outside lol.
What do you do when you're going to the shops or want to pop in somewhere?
I'm allergic to dogs. I'd be pissed if they were allowed to shed all over the polling station even though I adore them (from afar)
Are you normally so anxious about leaving your dog for a minute or two?

Sirzy · 08/06/2017 22:46

Depends where the polling station is surely?

I wouldn't expect people to be taking dogs into a school which is a polling station for example!

GeillisTheWitch · 08/06/2017 22:48

YABU. I'd expect no dogs allowed except service dogs to be the default position of most public buildings and plan accordingly.

harderandharder2breathe · 08/06/2017 22:48

Dogs (except Assistance dogs) aren't allowed in most of these places normally why should they be during polling? Your dog doesn't need to come with you. And I say that as a dog lover who enjoys #dogsatpollingstations and ageee with pp that all the ones I saw were outside.

I usually have dog with me when i vote and have never been a problem?

DontTouchTheMoustache · 08/06/2017 22:49

YABU...unless you are joking...you must be joking, yes?

This is trending on twitter right now.

Ratatatouille · 08/06/2017 22:49

When you become a dog owner you accept that there will be places that you cannot go with your dog. Most polling stations for example. You must have to go other places without the dog so what do you do with it then? Just do that when you vote.

For what it's worth, I am a dog owner myself.

pipsqueak25 · 08/06/2017 22:50

sorry but this seems a bit extreme, what do you do normally when you need to go shopping and mutley is with you ?

Sparklingbrook · 08/06/2017 22:51

Couldn't the dog just stay at home?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/06/2017 22:51

Never been a problem with us too.

Of course if the polling station is in a school then dogs won't be let in.

fioreun · 08/06/2017 22:51

I'm a Presiding Officer Number 1. Dogs very welcome at our polling stations. Never had any problems. Voters on the other hand...

Our polling station was a pub. Dogs were allowed.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/06/2017 22:58

I took the dog in, no one was bothered. She sat down next to me while I voted and sniffed the booth.

5foot5 · 08/06/2017 22:59

I think it's shit to expect dog owners to tie up their dogs outside or be held by strangers if visiting alone as anything could happen!

What could happen? I was in the polling station for around 60 seconds on my visit, I would have left the baby outside in the pram for that length of time. (Only kidding I wouldn't really. She's 21 anyway)

There must be other places you go where dogs aren't allowed. Is this for real?

ThanksVision · 08/06/2017 22:59

Of course dog can be left alone at home but just find it strange from one venue to another the rules change as dogs are allowed in an accompanying role as stated in plenty of news articles today just felt lulled into a false sense of security that it wouldn't be an issue.

But surely you can see that with such a wide variety of buildings being used rules will vary from location to location?

brasty · 08/06/2017 23:03

I think it depends on the building used as a polling station. Lots of buildings ban dogs, nothing to do with the election.

TheAntiBoop · 08/06/2017 23:03

as a soon to be dog owner - why are you concerned about leaving the dog outside?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/06/2017 23:05

Dogs get stolen, they can get hurt, they might get scared of something.
I don't leave them unattended.

guffaux · 08/06/2017 23:06

our polling station is a library-no dogs allowed in the library-but we were fully welcomed in today with our ddog, as we have been in the last few elections-(GE/police commissioner/referendum/mayor election/GE) cant figure out the reasoning for being allowed in, but ddog always gives wise counsel regarding our votes Grin
